Objective To analyze the structural, content and language characteristics of English abstract in domestic versus international geriatrics journals in order to promote international exchange in geriatric medicine research in our country. Methods In this paper,we analyzed the characteristics and contents of original articles published in 5 foreign journals (IF>3.0) from Pubmed database (n=60) and 5 core (the source of statistics) domestic geriatric journals from Wanfang web during recent 3 years (n=61).Results Our survey showed that in the domestic geriatrics journals, the structured abstracts were used with inflexible four-heading and fixed leading words. In foreign geriatrics journals,however,non-structured abstracts were mostly applied in articles on basic research, and structured abstracts primarily appeared in clinical or survey research papers.Compared with foreign geriatrics journals, the shortages or some problems in English abstracts of the domestic geriatrics journals included a short writing, repetition of objective with title, lack of description of research background, improper description of results data, more passive voice, improper use of modal verbs. Conclusions The domestic geriatrics journals should learn the diverse forms of abstracts and content structure from foreign geriatrics journals, strengthen the elaboration of background and highlights, and use active voice in concordance with the international mainstream.

Organic anion transporting polypeptide 1B1 (OATP1B1) is an important liver-specific uptake transporter, which mediates transport of numerous endogenous substances and drugs from blood into hepatocytes. To identify and investigate potential modulators of OATP1B1 from natural products, the effect of 21 frequently used natural compounds and extracts on OATP1B1-mediated fluorescein methotrexate transport was studied by using Chinese hamster ovary cells stably expressing OATP1B1 (CHO-OATP1B1) in 96-well plates. This method could be used for the screening of large compound libraries. Our studies showed that some flavonoids (e.g., quercetin, quercitrin, rutin, chrysanthemum flavonoids and mulberrin) and triterpenoids (e.g., glycyrrhetinic acid and glycyrrhizic acid) were inhibitors of OATP1B1 with IC50 values less than 16 µmol · L(-1). The IC50 value of glycyrrhetinic acid on OATP1B1 was comparable to its blood concentration in clinics, indicating an OATPlB1-mediated drug-drug interaction could occur. Structure-activity relationship analysis showed that flavonoids had much higher inhibitory activity than their glycosides. Furthermore, the type and length of saccharides had a significant effect on their activity. In addition, we used OATP1B1 substrates fluvastatin and rosuvastatin as probe drugs to investigate the substrate-dependent effect of several natural compounds on the function of OATP1B1 in vitro. Our results demonstrated that the effect of these natural products on the function of OATPlB1 was substrate-dependent. In summary, this study would be conducive to predicting and avoiding potential OATP1B1-mediated drug-drug and drug-food interactions and thus provide the experimental basis and guidance for rational drug use.

Objective To study the basic expression and cellular localization of SOCS-3 in normal rat retina. Methods Neuro-immunocytochemistry techniques were used. Results SOCS-3 positive cells were widely distributed in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) and inner nuclear layer (INL) in the retina. In the GCL, SOCS-3 immunoreactivity was mainly in the neuclei of the ganglion cells. Some of the SOCS-3 positive cells in INL were M?ller cells. Conclusion Basal expression of SOCS-3 is widely present in the neurons and glia in normal adult rat retina and mainly in the form of nuclear protein.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) Guardian for airway management in the patients requiring insertion of nasogastric tube before laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods Sixty patients of both sexes, aged 26-64 yr,weighing 48-95 kg,of American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status Ⅰ-Ⅲ,with Mallampati grade Ⅰ-Ⅲ,scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia, were divided into group Ⅰ and group Ⅱ (n =30 each) using a random number table. In group Ⅰ,the nasogastric tube was inserted through the drain tube of LMA Guardian. In group],the nasogastric tube was inserted through the nostril before operation, and after successful LMA Guardian placement, another nasogastric tube was inserted through the drain tube of LMA Guardian. The hemodynamic parameters,SpO2,end-tidal pressure of carbon dioxide and peak airway pressure (Ppeak) were monitored during operation. The fiberoptic laryngoscopy scores were assessed after successful LMA placement, and the nasogastric tube displacement was recorded. The LMA placement time, success rate of LMA placement at first attempt, airway sealing pressure, occurrence of air leakage of LMA and nasogastric tube drainage were recorded. The bloodstains and gastroesophageal reflux were observed after removal of the LMA.The pH values were tested at the tip of LMA and on the dorsal and ventral sides of the body of LMA using pH test papers. The development of adverse reactions in the oropharynx was recorded within 24 h after operation. Results The hemodynamics was stable, the SpO2 and Ppeak were within the normal range during operation, and Ppeak was lower than airway sealing pressure in the two groups (P>0.05),and there was no significant difference between the two groups. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the LMA placement time, success rate of LMA placement at first attempt, airway sealing pressure, score for exposure of oropharynx, development of adverse reactions in the oropharynx, consumption of anesthetics, development of bloodstains within the body of LMA and gastroesophageal reflux, and pH values at the tip of LMA and on the dorsal and ventral sides of the body of LMA (P>0.05).Nasogastric tube drainage:the rate of nasogastric tube drainage through the LMA Guardian was 67% in group Ⅰ;the rate of nasogastric tube drainage through the nostril was 40%,and the rate of nasogastric tube drainage though the LMA Guardian was 50% in group Ⅱ.No nasogastric tube displacement was found after operation in group Ⅱ.Conclusion For the patients requiring insertion of nasogastric tube before laparoscopic cholecystectomy, insertion of LMA Guardian is easy, and LMA Guardian can assure good airway sealing and adequate ventilation and can be safely and effectively used for airway management in this type of patients.
