In chronic kidney disease (CKD), inflammatory responses during the progression of renal tissue and tissue injury related causes its progression to end-state renal disease. Among them, nuclear factor (nuclear factor, NF)-kappaB signaling pathway by regulating the corresponding nuclear expression of target gene transcription, as well as affecting the synthesis of inflammatory mediators, induction of inflammation lead to kidney damage and renal fibrosis. Some single herbs and their extracts (such as Astragali Radix, Scutellariae Radix, Ginkgo Folium) and some traditional Chinese medicine (such as Danggui Buxue decoction, Qilian decoction) can reduce the inflammatory damage induced by renal tissue NF-kappaB signaling pathway and delay the progression of CKD.

BACKGROUND:As the sensitivity, clarity and accuracy of traditional ultrasound contrast agents are easy to be affected by objective factors, it is difficult to achieve diagnose and therapy simultaneously. Carbon nano tubes (CNTs) possess a specific reticular, hol ow and tubular structure and the potential to enhance the ultrasound imaging. The functional CNTs obtained through non-covalent adsorption, covalent bonding and internal embedding hold a good biocompatibility and high drug loading efficiency. So the drug loaded CNTs are added into the microbubble to synthesize a multi-functional ultrasound contrast agent. OBJECTIVE:To prepare the span-poly(ethylene glycol) (span-PEG) ultrasound contrast agent microbubble combined with folate-CNTs-paclitaxel (FA-CNTs-PTX) and to investigate its appearance, particle size as wel as loading efficiency of CNTs and PTX. METHODS:Firstly, the span-PEG microbubble was prepared using the acoustic cavitation method and its preparation process was optimized through the orthogonal experiment. Then the FA-CNTs-PTX compound was synthesized by the electrostatic self-assembly andπ-πadsorption principle. In the end, the span-PEG ultrasound contrast agent microbubble combined with FA-CNTs-PTX was obtained by loading the FA-CNTs-PTX into the span-PEG microbubble. The appearance of the composite microbubble were observed using scanning and transmission electron microscopes, the distribution and average particle size were detected by laser particle size analyzer, and the loading efficiency of CNTs and PTX was measured through ultraviolet spectroscopy. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The composite microbubble had a smooth surface and the average particle size was 442 nm. The loading efficiency of CNTs and PTX in the composite microbubble was 1.69%and 47.9%, respectively. To conclude, the FA-CNTs-PTX targeting drug delivery system is successful y loaded into the span-PEG microbubble. The composite microbubble is a hol ow sphere that has uniform nanoscaled particle size distributions, which is expected to become an ideal ultrasound contrast agent involved in angiography and targeting therapy.

Background Qiang minority is minority groups of China with the special habits and customs and living condition. So whether the spectrum of disease and bacteria spectrum in conjunctiva are similar with Han nationality is worth paying attention. Objective Present survey was to obtain the data about bacterial species in conjunctival sac in Qiang minority population with the age 40 years old and more and the compare with matched Han nationality population. Methods This survey study was performed as the standardized training and protocol. A total of 212 eyes of 106 individuals from Qiang minority in Beichuan county and 640 eyes of 320 subjects from Han nationality in Mianyang city received questionnaire survey and ophthalmological examination. The secretion of the inferior palpebral conjunctival sac was embrocated and inoculated on blood plate for 48-72 hours. The bacteria was separated and identified. This study was approved by the Ethic Committee of Sichuan Provicial People' s Hospital. Orally informed consent was obtained before the medical procedure. Results All the examinee finished the survey and examination with a good compliance. No significant difference was found in the demography between these two groups of population. The multiple bacterial positive rate in conjunctival sac was 59. 4% in Qiang minority and that of Han people was 66. 3% with a considerably difference between them (χ2 = 2. 27,P = 0. 13). The multiple bacterial species were simultaneously detected in 26.2% in Qiang minority population and 11.88% Han people, showing evidently difference (χ2 = 106. 40, P = 0. 00 ) . The positive rate of corynbaccterium in conjunctival sac of Qiang minority was statistically lower than that of Han people (20. 7% versus 45. 0% ,χ2 =31. 75 ,P = 0. 00) ,but there was no statistical difference in the positive rate of staphylococcus epidemics between two groups (χ2 = 1. 89 ,P = 0. 17). Conclusion The bacteria positive rate in conjunctiva sac is resemble in the population over 40 years in both the Qiang minority and Han nationality. The simple bacterial species is found in majority people in two groups of subjects. The positive rate of multiple bacterial strains coexistence is more in the Qiang minority. The bacterial strains is different between Qiang minority and Han nationality.

OBJECTIVETo objectively evaluate the therapeutic effect and safety of Runmushu Oral Liquid (RMS) for the treatment of xerophthalmia in postmenopausal women.
METHODSSeventy-two postmenopausal women (144 eyes) with xerophthalmia of aqueous tear deficiency type were assigned to two groups. Patients in the treated group were treated with RMS (consisted of prepared and crude rehmannia root, figwort, lilyturf root, dendrobium stem, wolfberry fruit, chrysanthemum and sticktight) orally combining with local applying of Hialid eye drops; while those in the control group were treated with Hialid eye drops alone. Changes of subjective symptoms and objective indices in the two groups were observed and compared before and after 1-month treatment.
RESULTSAfter 1 month of treatment, the total effective rate was 86.1% (62/72) in the treated group and 66.7% (48/72) in the control group, showing significant difference between them (P < 0.01). Significant differences between groups were also shown in improvements of total scores of subjective symptoms (P < 0.01), scores of tear film break-up time (BUT) and Schirmer I test, these indices in the treated group were better (P < 0.01). However, the improvement of cornea fluorescin staining scores was insignificant different between groups (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONRMS with artificial-tears can alleviate the eye symptoms, prolong the BUT, promote the secretion of tears in treating postmenopausal women xerophthalmia, showing a therapeutic effect superior to that by artificial-tears alone.
