5.Alu and L1 Retroelements Are Correlated with the Tissue Extent and Peak Rate of Gene Expression, Respectively.

We exploited the serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) libraries and human genome database in silico to correlate the breadth of expression (BOE; housekeep-ing versus tissue-specific genes) and peak rate of expression (PRE; high versus low expressed genes) with the density distribution of the retroelements. The BOE status is linearly associated with the density of the sense Alus along the 100 kb nucleotides region upstream of a gene, whereas the PRE status is inversely correlated with the density of antisense L1s within a gene and in the up- and downstream regions of the 0-10 kb nucleotides. The radial distance of intranuclear position, which is known to serve as the global domain for transcription regulation, is reciprocally correlated with the fractions of Alu (toward the nuclear center) and L1 (toward the nuclear edge) elements in each chromosome. We propose that the BOE and PRE statuses are related to the reciprocal distribution of Alu and L1 elements that formulate local and global expression domains.

6.Detection of Anaplasma sp. in Korean Native Goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) on Jeju Island, Korea.

Anaplasma species are obligate intracellular pathogens that can cause tick-borne diseases in mammalian hosts. To date, very few studies of their occurrence in Korean native goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) have been reported. In the present study, we investigated Anaplasma infection of Korean native goats on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, and performed phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences. Our results showed that Anaplasma infection was found mostly in adult female goats. The phylogenetic tree revealed that the 7 sequences identified in Korean native goats could belong to Anaplasma sp. and were distinct from A. marginale, A. centrale, and A. ovis. The results indicated that the sequences identified to belong to Anaplasma were closely related to sequences isolated from goats in China and were clustered within the same group. To our knowledge, this is the first study to detect Anaplasma sp. infection in Korean native goats.

7.Biologic stability of plasma ion-implanted miniscrews.

OBJECTIVE: To gain basic information regarding the biologic stability of plasma ion-implanted miniscrews and their potential clinical applications. METHODS: Sixteen plasma ion-implanted and 16 sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) miniscrews were bilaterally inserted in the mandibles of 4 beagles (2 miniscrews of each type per quadrant). Then, 250 - 300 gm of force from Ni-Ti coil springs was applied for 2 different periods: 12 weeks on one side and 3 weeks contralaterally. Thereafter, the animals were sacrificed and mandibular specimens including the miniscrews were collected. The insertion torque and mobility were compared between the groups. The bone-implant contact and bone volume ratio were calculated within 800 microm of the miniscrews and compared between the loading periods. The number of osteoblasts was also quantified. The measurements were expressed as percentages and analyzed by independent t-tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: No significant differences in any of the analyzed parameters were noted between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The preliminary findings indicate that plasma ion-implanted miniscrews have similar biologic characteristics to SLA miniscrews in terms of insertion torque, mobility, bone-implant contact rate, and bone volume rate.

8.Overgrowth Syndrome with 9q22.3 Microdeletion Detected by Microarray Comparative Genomic Hybridization.

Microdeletion of 9q22.3 is a rare chromosomal disorder characterized by body overgrowth, facial dysmorphic features and psychomotor delay. The presence of genomic microdeletion or microdu-plication can not be identified by the conventional chromosomal analysis. Microarray comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a newly developed molecular cytogenetic technique that enables the identification of minute copy number variation (CNV) in the human genome. Here, we report a case of microdeletion in the 9q22.31-q22.33 region, which included a patched homolog 1 (PTCH1) gene, as detected by CGH and confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses in a neonate with prenatal onset of macrosomia, dysmorphism, and muscle hypotonia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of 9q22.3 microdeletion detected by CGH in Korea.

10.Contour of lingual surface in lower complete denture formed by polished surface impression.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the shapes of lingual polished surfaces in lower complete dentures formed by polished surface impressions and to provide reference data for use when manufacturing edentulous trays and lower complete dentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients with mandibular edentulism were studied. After lower wax dentures were fabricated, wax was removed from the lingual side of the wax denture and a lingual polished surface impression was obtained with tissue conditioner. The definitive denture was scanned with a three-dimensional scanner, and scanned images were obtained. At the cross-sections of the lingual frenum, lateral incisors, first premolars, first molars, and anterior border of the retromolar pads, three points were marked and eight measurements were taken. The Kruskal-Wallis test and a post hoc analysis with the Mann-Whitney test were performed. RESULTS: Each patient showed similar values for the same areas on the left and right sides without a statistically significant difference. The height of the contour of the lingual polished surface at the lingual frenum was halfway between the occlusal plane and lingual border, it moved gradually in a downward direction. The angle from the occlusal plane to the height of the contour of the lingual polished surface was increased as it progressed from the lingual frenum towards the retromolar pads. CONCLUSION: The shape of the mandibular lingual polished surface was convex at the lingual frenum, lateral incisors and gradually flattened towards the first molars and retromolar pads.
