Objective: To comprehensively assess the relationship between nerve conduction study (NCS), sympathetic skin response (SSR), and demographic factors in patients with diabetic neuropathy, exploring potential risk factors and mechanisms. Methods: A retrospective study (N=184) included patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus undergoing NCS and SSR. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were analyzed. Patients were categorized by diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and SSR stages for comparative analysis. Results: HbA1c levels correlated with DPN progression. SSR stages exhibited age-related differences. Height correlated with DPN but not SSR stages. Body mass index showed no significant differences. Conclusion While DPN progression correlated with glycemic control and duration of diabetes, SSR was influenced by age. Unexpectedly, cholesterol levels remained within the normal range, challenging established concepts. Understanding these relationships is crucial for interpreting test results and developing targeted interventions for diabetic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Although it is well known that bone mineral density (BMD) loss occurs after menopausal transition, there are only few previous studies that describe differences of BMD and biochemical bone markers in women of pre- and postmenopausal periods. The purpose of this study was to find factors that contribute to loss of BMD after menopause and to show changes of BMD and biochemical bone markers during pre- and postmenopausal periods by retrospective cohort study. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was performed from Jan. 1995 to Jan. 2001 at a health promotion center. Twenty one healthy perimenopausal women were enrolled. BMD and biochemical bone markers were checked more than two times during the study period. Changes of BMD and biochemical bone markers between pre- and postmenopausal state were compared by paired t-test. Pearson correlation and multiple regression were performed to find the contributing factors to loss of BMD after menopause. RESULTS: Postmenopausal BMD (164.65 36.34 mg/cm3) was significantly decreased to 16.49 16.91 mg/cm3 (P<0.001) as compared with premenopausal BMD (181.14 40.81 mg/cm3). In biochemical bone markers only urine deoxypyridinoline had a significant difference (3.30 3.97 nMDP/mMcre, P<0.05) Only premenopausal BMD contributed to decreasing rate of BMD between the two states and the loss of BMD after menopause (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: In perimenopausal healthy women, postmenopausal BMD was significantly decreased as compared with premenopausal BMD. And only premenopausal BMD was shown to be a contributing factor to decreasing rate of BMD between the two states and the loss of BMD after menopause. It suggests that premenopausal BMD is important in predicting postmenopausal osteoporosis and efforts to prevent loss of BMD before menopause can prevent progress of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

This study was conducted to investigate potential differences in vaccine efficacy between patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy and receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Additionally, the study proved the influence of vaccination timing on vaccine efficacy during active chemotherapy. Anti-receptor-binding domain (RBD) IgG binding antibody assays and surrogate neutralizing antibody assays were performed after BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 vaccination in 45 solid cancer patients (23 adjuvant and 22 palliative chemotherapy) and in 24 healthy controls before vaccination (baseline), at every two to four weeks after the first (post-dose 1) and the second vaccination (post-dose 2). The levels of anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibodies increased significantly from baseline through post-dose 1 to post-dose 2 in all three groups. At the post-dose 1, the anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibody levels were significantly lower in cancer patients than in healthy controls. However, by post-dose 2, the seropositivity of anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibodies uniformly reached 100% across all groups, with no significant disparity in antibody levels among the three groups. Moreover, the antibody titers were not significantly different between patients with a vaccine and chemotherapy interval of more than 14 days or those with less than 14 days. This study demonstrated that after second doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, humoral immune responses in patients receiving chemotherapy were comparable to those of healthy controls, regardless of whether the purpose of the anti-cancer treatment was palliative or adjuvant. Furthermore, the timing of vaccination did not affect the level of humoral immunity after the second vaccination.

Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms/benign prostatic hyperplasia in a Korean population. Materials and Methods: The Korean Prostate & Voiding Health Association provided free prostate-related community health care and conducted surveys in all regions of Korea from 2001 to 2022 with the cooperation of local government public health centers. A total of 72,068 males older than 50 were surveyed and analyzed. History taking, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), transrectal ultrasonography, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, uroflowmetry, and urine volume testing were performed. Results: The mean prostate volumes in males in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s or above were 24.7 g, 27.7 g, 31 g, and 33.7 g, respectively. The proportion of males with high PSA greater than 3 ng/mL was 3.8% among males in their 50s, 7.7% among males in their 60s, 13.1% among males in their 70s, and 17.9% among males 80 years of age or older. The mean IPSS total scores in males in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s or above were 10.7, 12.7, 14.5, and 16, respectively. Severe symptoms were reported by 27.3% of males, whereas 51.7% reported moderate symptoms. The mean Qmax in males in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s or above were 20 mL/s, 17.4 mL/s, 15.4 mL/s, and 13.8 mL/s, respectively. Conclusions In this population-based study, mean prostate volume, IPSS, PSA, and Qmax were 30.6±15.1 g, 14.8±8.2, 1.9±4.7 ng/mL, and 15.6±6.5 mL/s, respectively. Aging was significantly associated with increased prostate volume, PSA levels, and IPSS scores, and with decreased Qmax and urine volume.
