Edwards syndrome is first introduced by Edwards and characterized by facial anomalies, multiple cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and skeletal malformations. It results from triplication of part or all of chromosome 18 in some or all of the patient's cells. It has an incidence of 1 in 4,500 live births or less and short life expectancy. Recently we experienced a case of 3-day-old female new born infant with this syndrome. Post mortem examination showed progeric face with prominent occiput, large flabby ears, microphthalmia, and micrognathia, bilateral clenched hands with flexion contraction of middle fingers, and bilateral rockerbottom feet. Internal examination revealed horseshoe kidney, esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula, two accessory spleens, and multiple cardiac anomalies. A trisomy 18 was confirmed by the cytogenetic study.

Journal of the Korean Geriatrics Society 2004;8(4):191-195
BACKGROUND: The proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cell(VSMC) is a part of the major pathogenic mechanism for atheroscle- rosis. It has been reported that L-type calcium channel plays a role in the VSMC proliferation in diabetic rats. But there is a little study results about the association between L-type calcium channel and VSMC proliferation by glucose concentrations in culture media. So we examined the association between voltage-dependent L-type calcium channel of VSMCs and the proliferative activity of vascular smooth muscle cells. METHODS: Rat aortic VSMCs were isolated from the aorta of OLETF rat by enzyme method. VSMCs were cultured in various concentrations of glucose(5.5, 25 mM). The VSMCs(1x104 cells in 24-well plates) were incubated in the presence of Bay K 8644 (10-6M) with/without verapamil(10-6M) for 48 hours. Then the proliferation was assessed by MTT(methylthiazole tetrazolium) assay and expression of L-type calcium channel mRNA was measured by RT-PCR. RESULTS: The proliferative ability and the expression of L-type calcium channel of cultured VSMCs were increased dose-dependently by the glucose concentrations(p<0.05). Bay K 8644 enhanced the proliferation of VSMC and verapamil blocked the incremental effects induced by Bay K 8644. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that L-type calcium channel may play a role in VSMC proliferation of OLETF rat.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 1982;11(2):173-181
The authors report their experience with 22 cases of intracranial suppuration : 18 with brain abscess and four with subdural empyema. A small series of nine consecutive cases of intracranial suppuraion with one death is presented since Computed Tomographic brain scanning become a routine diagnostic procedure. These patient have been compared to 13 consecutive cases treated without benefit of CT analysis in order to determine the factors responsible for the recently improved prognosis. The mortality rate was 30.8% for al operated patients treated before availability of CT and 22.7% for the patient since advent of CT scan. Among the factors that may have contributed to the improved results for patients diagnosed with CT are : fewer patients with poor preperative clinical status, and a great incidence of total abscess removal. In addition, CT scanning provided more accurate diagnosis and localization of abscess and aided in the rapid detection of postoperative complication.
