1.Typing of Herpes Simplex Virus Isolated from Different Sites.

One-hundred-eleven herpes simplex viruses(HSV) were isolated from l09 patients who had visited the Department of Dermatology, Ophthalmology, and Gynecology of Hanyang University Hospital from 1986 through 1988, for suspected HSV lesions. The cultured viruses were classified into HSV-1 and HSV-2 by using direct and indirect immunofluorescent staining with monoclonal antibodies against HSV. In this study, HSV type 1 were predominantly involved in the HSV lesions above the waist of the patients(83.6%), and the infections caused by HSV type 2(I3.1 %) and bath HSV types(3.3%) were also noted. In contrast, the main organism of the HSV lesions below the waist were HSV-2(80.0%), and HSV-1(16.0% ) and both types(4.0%) were also involved in. The result suggested that the number of patients with HSV 1 genital herpes and/or with non-genital herpes by HSV-2 were apparently increasing. In conclusion, it is conceivable that the classification of HSV isolates might be useful for determining prognosis as well as performing epidemiologic studies of HSV infections.

6.Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica: A Case Report

Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica is a rare developmental disorder of epiphyseal growth characterized by asymmetrical cartilagenous overgrowth. This disorder was first described with the “la tarsomegalie” by Mouchet and Belot in 1926 but this name, Dysolasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica, was first proposed by Fairbank in 1956. This disorder is usually limited to either the medial or lateral half of a single extremity in childhood. It is asymptomatic until the protruding epiphyseal mass interferes joint function. The character istic abnormalities are deformities, restricted motion and pain. The most frequent finding at the initial examination is an irregular, often multicentric radiopacity, and when the lesion is matured it looks irregular, and frequently there is a lobulated osseous mass protruding from the epiphysis of tarsal and carpal bones. Diagnosis by the roentgenogram requires primarily knowledge of this condition. The lesion is often microscopically indistinguishable from an osteochondroma. A case of Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica in a 17 year old male, showing typical roentgenographic appearances, is reported together with a brief review of literature in this paper.

8.Medial Depression with Bony Dehiscence of Lamina Papyracea as an Anatomic Variation: CT Evaluation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence and CT findings of the medial depression and bony dehiscence of lamina papyracea as an anatomic variation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 1472 PNS CTs of the patients with symptoms of chronic sinusitis were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS: The total incidence of depressed lamina papyracea as an anatomic variation was 3.5%(52/1472) on PNS CT. There was a statistically significant correlation between the increasing age and the incidence of delamina papyracea. Depression of lamina papyracea anterior to the basal lamella were more common those of the posterior depression. Associated findings were herniation of adjacent fatty tissue in all cases and the roedial bowing and hypertrophied configuration of the medial rectus muscle without significant herniation in 19 cases(34%). CONCLUSION: Nontraumatic, asymptomatic depression with bony dehiscence of lamina papyracea as an anatomic variation is not uncommon with the incidence of 3.5%. Recognition of its existence and degree may helpful in avoiding various ocular complication during ethmoid surgery.

9.The Effects of Action Observation with Functional Electrical Stimulation on Corticomuscular Coherence

Objective:
To investigate the action observation effects of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on the communication between motor cortex and muscle through corticomuscular coherence (CMC) analysis.
Methods:
Electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) of 27 healthy, nonathlete subjects were measured during action observation, FES, and action observation with FES, which lasted for 7sper session for 10 times. All trials were repeated for 30 times. Simultaneously measured EEG raw data and rectified EMG signals were used to calculate CMC. Only confidence limit values above 0.0306 were used for analysis. CMC was divided into three frequency domains, andthe grand average coherence and peak coherence were computed. Repeated ANOVA was performed to analyze the coherence value difference for each condition’s frequency band.
Results:
CMC showed significant differences in peak coherence and average coherence between the conditions (p<0.05). Action observation application with FES in all frequency band showed the highest peak and average coherence value.
Conclusions
The results of this study are assumed to be the combination of increased eccentric information transfer from the sensory-motor cortex by action observation and an increased in concentric sensory input from the peripheral by the FES, suggesting that these are reflecting the sensorimotor integration process.
