To evaluate usefulness of MR in assessment of tumor response to the chemotheraphy, we prospectively studied cases of cervical carcinoma with more then 2.5cm in diameter or stage IIb or more. Three courses of chemotherapy were performed with cisplatin and 5 F-U. MR images were obtained both before and after chemotherapy. Nine of 13 patients were undertaken radical hysterectomy after chemotherapy and MR examination. MR volumetry, stage and depth of stromal invasion were compared before and after chemotherapy. And in 9 patients who underwent radical hysterectomy, comparison of pathologic and MR imaging findings were also done. @ES The results were following. @EN 1) All tumors dectrased in volume (m=80.5%). 2) Five tumors (38.5%) reduced in stage, IB→CIS(1); IIA→CIS(1), IIA→IB(2), IIB→IB(1). 3) Depth of stromal invasion in MRI correlated well with that of histo-pathologic specimen in 7 of the 9 patients. Conclusively MR imaging is useful in assessement of tumor response to chemotherapy.

We report a case of alopecia neoplastica-a rare form of cutaneous metastasis-in a 43-year-old Korean woman, who presented with multiple red, bald patches of 1 month's duration on her scalp. About 2 years previously, she received a modified left radical mastectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. Histopathological findings of the bald lesions revealed diffuse infiltration of hyperchmmatic tumor cells arranged singly and in strands and cords in the upper and lower dermis. We started chemotherapy with adriamycin, but she died 13 months later.

An epidemiological survey on cholera was made toward the 291 cases admitted in Pusan National University Hospital. The results were as follows. 1. The most predominant age groups among all cholera patients were form 30 to 39(21.3%). 2. 74.9% of all cases got under the educational background of primary school and 69.4% of all cases occurred at the low income group. 3. Daily average numbers of patient were 6.2 and maximum numbers were 15, August 19, 1970. 4. Among the food eaten prior to onset, drinking water was the most predominant with 16.2% and next, food and noodle groups were 14.8% and 10.3% respectively. 5. Regarding incubation period, it was found that "within 48 hours" was 83 5%. 6. Patients occurred mainly in Suh Ku area with 105(36.1%) of all closes. 7. Carrie rates among family members were 1.78%. 8. Carrier rates among residents of epidemic area were 0.l2%.

The mechanism responsible for the formation of sunburn cells in mammalian skin is unknown. However it is suggested that the reactive free radicals and oxygen species generated by UV radiation are causing oxidative reactions in certain keratinocytes that are manifestated in the form of dyskeratotic cells and free radical scavengers such as a-tocopherol acetate or p-carotene were thought to be photoprotective against sunburn radiation. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of single and multiple applications of n-tocopherol acetate(a-TCA) and p-carotene on the formation of sunburn cells. We also determined the effect of these two antioxidants on the sunburn reartion by UVB irradiation. The results were as follows : 1. Both a-tocopheroJ acetate and p-carotene were photoprotective and prevented the formation of sunburn cells and sunburn reaction. 2. Topical p-carotene was less photoprotective than u-tocopherol acetate. 3. Topical use of a-tocopherol acetate and p-carotene in dose range exceeding 1,000 pgcm could provide photoprotective effect if the UVB exposure doses were less than 300 mJ/cm'( 3 MED)

BACKGROUND: Recently, clinical use of fresh frozen plasma(FFP) has increased in all blood transfusion activity. But inappropriate uses of FFP may be serious problem due to adverse transfusion reactions, viral transmission, and economic aspects. The aim of this study is to justify clinical indication of FFP by receiving the inappropriate use of them. METHODS: Analyzing hospital records of 115 patients transfused with FFP at Kyung Hee Medical Center from January to April 1998, retrospectively, we investigated the purpose of transfusions, the volume of transfused FFP, and the results of pre- and post-coagulation tests. RESULTS: The most common purpose of transfusions of FFP was plasma volume replacement after surgical operation. Coagulation tests of pre- and post-transfusion were performed 85% and 47%, respectively. Fifty-seven patients(88%) transfused FFP have shown normal results in pre-coagulation tests, and the volume replacement with FFP was done inadequately in 62 cases(54%). CONCLUSION: We conclude that, in order to eliminate side effects due to inappropriate use of FFP, and protect patients, it is necessary to make guidelines of FFP transfusion, educate hospital staffs regularly, and perform pre- and post-coagulation tests routinely for the patients who need FFP transfusion. We report a case of atypical eruption due to chemotherapeutic agent in a 60-year-old man who presented with asymptomatic, erythematous, 0.5cm in diameter, confluent, and elevated papules and plaques confined to the face. The patient was previously diagnosed with small cell carcinoma of the lung with liver metastasis. Two months after the diagnosis, a first course of chemotherapy including etoposide was started. Five days after starting the chemotherapy, the patient developed a facial eruption. Histopathologic examination demonstrated increased epidermal mitotic figures, cells in metaphase arrest, basal cell layer hyperpigmentation, prominent dyskeratosis, and squamous atypia. The most distinctive histologic feature was the presence of starburst cells, which are markedly enlarged pale staining keratinocytes containing small basophilic fragments of nuclear debris haphazardly scattered throughout the cytoplasm in a starburst pattern.
