1.DETECT10N OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS AND OVEREXPRESS1ON OF p53 IN SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMAS OF ORAL CAVITY.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that human papillomavirus(HPV) infection is a high risk factor for the development of oral cancers. Many oncogenes, especially p53 suppressor gene, have a critical role of carcinogenesis in several human cancers including oral cancers. To investigate the prevalence of HPV infection and subtyping of high risk group(HPV-16, -18 and -33) HPV in oral cancers, the author studied 31 cases of squamous cell carcinomas arising from the oral cavity using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The author also demonstrated the overexpression of p53 oncoprotein in the oral cancers using immunohistochemical methods. The correlation between HPVs infection and p53 overexpression in tumorigenesis of the oral cancers was evaluated. 1. Twenty-one cases(66.7%) among 31 cases of oral squamous cell carcinomas were positive for HPV-DNA. Among them, 16 cases were positive for HPV-16, 4 cases for HPV-18, and 2 cases for HPV-33. Two cases were coinfected with HPV-16 and HPV-18, and HPV-18 and HPV-33. 2. The prevalence of HPV infection appeared not correlated with tumor differentiation and clinical stages of oral squamous cell carcinomas. 3. The overexpression of p53 oncoprotein was present in 24 of 31 cases(77% ). In 21 HPV positive tumors 18 cases were positive for overexpression of p53 oncoprotein. Six cases were positive for p53 in ten HPV negative tumors. There was no correlation between HPV DNA detection rate and p53 overexpression. The above results suggest that HPV infection and p53 oncogene mutation play different roles in tumorigenesis of oral squamous cell carcinomas. No coexpression of p53 oncoprotein with HPV-DNA detection suggests that another etiologic mechanism other than HPV infection may be operative.

3.Adventitial Cystic Disease of the Superficial Femoral Vein without a Joint Connection: A Case Report

Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) of the veins is a rare vascular disease. Most cases of venous ACD are located adjacent to the joint area, such as the common femoral, external iliac, and popliteal veins. To the best of our knowledge, 67 cases of venous ACD have been reported, and ACD of the superficial femoral vein (SFV) has never been reported. Herein, we report the case of a 57-year-old male who presented with swelling and discomfort in the left leg. Computed tomography venography revealed multiple cystic lesions in the left distal SFV. The patient underwent cyst excision, which relieved the compression in the vein, although mild stenosis prevailed in the SFV. After a week, thrombosis developed in the popliteal vein. The thrombosis resolved after three months of anticoagulant therapy, and the patient showed no recurrence of ACD during three years of follow-up.

6.Distribution of Glycoconjugates During Wound Healing After Argon Laser Photocoagulation in Pigmented Rabbit Retina.

Lectin is a non-immunological glycoprotein and binds specifically to carbohydrate terminals in tissue. Lectin histochemistry using 10 different biotinylated lectins was performed to investigate the effects on thirty-two pigmented rabbit retinas during wound healing. The results are as follows: 1) In normal retina. a) WGA, RCA I, and LCA were bound to the internal limiting membrane. b) WGA, RCA I, LCA, and PNA were bound to the photoreceptor layer. c) WGA, RCA I, LCA, SJA, ConA and BSL I were bound to the basal side of retinal pigment epithelium. d) PNA was bound to cone cell only. e) SBA, DBA, and UEA I didn't bind to any layers of retina. 2) In photocoagulated wound. One day after photocoagulation WGA, LCA and RCA I began to show increased reaction. At 3 and 5 days these lectins sustained reactivity. At 7 days increased reactivity began to decrease or disappear from wound. Macrophages had positive reaction to BSL I, WGA, LCA, and RCA I. In conclusion these results indicate that a-mannose, a glucose, a, beta-galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, and N-acetylneuramic acid are present in glycoconjugates of normal rabbit neural retina. It seems that some glycoconjugates may be related to vitreoretinal, retinal and chorioretinal adhesion in normnal retinal, and after argon laser photocoagulation. WGA-binding, LCA-binding and RCA I-binding glycoconjugates may play a part in cell adhesion during early wound healing.

7.The efficiency of SAS used retraction of the anterior teeth on orthodontic treatment.

The retraction of anterior teeth could be performed more easier by inducing of skeletal anchorage system rather than by conventional method on orthodontic treatment. But, we wonder how effective the system draws well without anchorage loss and draws anterior teeth aside posteriorly, and if the system can reduce the time, in comparison with the anchorage of posterior teeth. For that reason we have studied on the subject of patients, who were required the maximum anchorage on orthodontic treatment and the cases without crowding. The subjects of the experimental group are 35 areas of 20 people who were inserted miniscrews after Mx or Mn 1st premolar extracted. Also, the subjects of the control group are 81 areas of 45 people who were not inserted miniscrews. Compared the anchorage loss of experimental group with control one, we could get the result that the anchorage loss of experimental group is 1.034+/-0.891mm and control group is 2.790+/-1.882mm(P<0.01). Compared the space closing time of experimental group with control one, we could get the result that the space closing time of experimental group is 369.40+/-110.81days and control group is 406.56+/-231.63days. But the result of comparing space closing time has no significance in statistics. We recognized that the experimental group is more faster than the control group in the canine retraction velocity from the result ; the speed of a experimental group has as much as 0.60+/-0.23mm/30days while the speed of a control group has 0.44+/-0.35mm/30days(P<0.05). So, we could convince that orthodontic miniscrew is used effectively in the cases required the maximum anchorage.

8.A Study of the Liver Biopsies in Infancy and Childhood.

To investigate the liver diseases affecting infancy and Childhood and to make a clinicopathologic correlation, a total of 105 liver biopsies were examined and following results were obtained. 1. Of the 105 liver biopsies, 94 cases were available for the study, and the male to female ratio of liver biopsies in infancy and childhood was 1.8 : 1. 2. Of the 94 available cases, 36 were of diffuse hepatitis, 15 congenital biliary atresia, 4 liver cirrhosis and 3 were of malignant neoplasm. The liver biopsy showed only fatty metamorphosis in 12 cases(12.8%) and the remainings were of other rare liver diseases(19.1%) or of normal liver tissue(6.4%). 3. Diffuse hepatitis affected male 2.3 times more commonly than female, and comprised of 3 acute viral hepatitis, 3 chronic active hepatitis, 7 chronic persistent hepatitis, 1 cholangitis, 8 neonatal hepatitis and 14 nonspecific reactive hepatitis. 4. Congenital biliary atresia affected male and female in about equal frequency, and 13 of the 15 cases were extrahepatic. 5. Two of the 4 live cirrhosis were macronodular, and primary and 2ndary cirrhosis were encountered one in each. 6. Of the 12 cases of fatty metamorphosis, 8 were regarded clinically as Reye's syndrome. 7. Among 34 cases in which the serum HBsAg was tested, 11 were positive, namely all of 3 acut viral hepatitis, 2 chronic active hepatitis, 4 chronic persistent hepatitis and all of 2 macronodular cirrhosis. In neonatal hepatitis and congenital biliary atresia it was exclusively negative. 8. The clinical diagnosis was compatible with the biopsy diagnosis in 60.6% of 94 cases.

9.Effect of Thyroxine on the Cardiac Uptake of Catecholamines.

The influence of thyroxine upon n the cardiac uptake of catecholamines was investigated in rabbits. A single injection of thyroxine(1.0m/kg) into rabbits did not affect the concentration of myocardial catecholamines. However, this dose of thyroxine greatly increased the cardiac uptake of catecholamine following injection of 2.0mg of norepinephrine as compared to that of untreated normal animals and it remained elevated for several hours. Similarly thyroxine also enhanced the accumulation of myocardial catecholamines following administration of dopa(60-80mg/kg) and epinephrine(1.0-1.5mg/kg).
