1.A Study on Changes of the Foot Shape with the Weight Loading by One Foot.

In this study, foot girth, instep girth, instep height, foot arch height, foot length, foot width, heel width and five length items in forepart foot were measured using chiefly the method of measurements with foot projected contours. 38 young women and 5 young men participated in this experiments. Two positions of the foot were taken in account : 1) normal position-when body weight is not supported by right foot 2) weight loading position-when body weight is supported by right foot. The following results were obtained. 1. The change rates of the men subjects show a more increased shapes in foot width and forepart foot length than in the change rates of the women subjects. 2. The changes of foot shape when body weight is supported by one foot, inside part of the foot size was increased with greater surfaces in women while the outside part of the foot size was increased with greater surfaces in men subjects.

2.The Effect of Local Heating on the Hunting Reactions of Korean Subjects.

To clarify the physiological thermoregulatory response of the human body, the local heating and hunting reaction experiments were performaed. The subjects were 10 healthy women from 19 to 22 years of age. For the local heating experiment, oral temperature, skin temperature, deep skin temperature and thermal sensations were measured every 5 min during the 40 min experiment. Heated areas were neck, shoulder, abdomen, hands and feet. These five areas were heated with the hot pack of 50℃. For the hunting reaction experiment, oral temperature, thermal sensation of the whole body and cold pain sensation of the finger were measured every 5 min during and after immersion of the left middle finger in 5℃ ice water for 40 min. The skin temperature of the finger tip was measured with a copperconstantan thermocouple every each min during and after immersion. Cold tolerance index was made on the basis of following items ; the skin temperature at the first rise(T.F.R), time for the first skin temperature rise (T.T.R), mean skin temperature during immersion(M.S.t). Conclusions : 1. Skin temperature and deep skin temperature have been much influenced by the abdomen heating. 2. The correlation between the whole body thermal sensation and the upper trunk thermal sensation was singnificantly recognized. 3. T.F.R. and M.S.T. of the hunting reaction with abdomen heating is significantly higher at the 0.01 level by T-test than that of the hunting reaction without abdomen heating. T.T.R is also significantly shorter for the hunting reaction with abdomen heating than that for the hunting reaction without abdomen heating.

3.Observation on Neck Form Changes Related to Aging in Men (Part ll) - by the Neck Surface Changes Using the Tape Method.

As a mean to get a better understanding of the kind of form changes to which is subject the neck of the men in their aging process, replicas of neck surfaces were made on 9 subjects (3 in their twenties, 3 in their forties and 3 in their sixties) using the tape method. Three positions of the neck were taken in account : 1) normal position 2) right turn position 3) bent forward position. Measurements of the developed tape replicas have given us the following results : 1. Shapes of the different developed replicas ; Developed replicas of the elder subject show a more curved shape than the replica of the middle age subject, the younger subject having its neck base line the least curved. 2. Surface Area Changes ; In normal position, the neck replica of the elder group covers a smaller surface (average 163.7cm2) than the corresponding one of the younger group (average 193.5cm3). The bent forward position, increases the back surface of the neck in a percentage ranging from 19% to 26% without any major differences between the 3 age groups. The front neck surface being decreased at the same time we verified that the total surface compared to the normal position, had not increased.

5.Interleukin-10 Differently Regulates Type I Collagen and Stromelysin-1 Promoter Activities in Dermal Fibroblast Cultures.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-10(IL-10) was initially discovered and isolated on the basis of its ability to suppress cytokine by Thl helper T cell. Recently, the effect of IL-10 has been reported in cultured connective tissue cells. OBJECTIVE: To further investigate the mechanisms of IL-10 on extracellular matrix(ECM) homeostasis, we evaluated the expression of type I collagen and stromelysin-1 at the transcriptional level and also observed their promoters activities. METHODS: We examined that effect of the recombinant human IL-10 on the expression of genes involved in extracelluar matrix(ECM) synthesis and remodelimg in human dermal fibroblast cultures. Quantification of collagen synthesis, Northern blot analysis, transient transfection and a chloramphenicol acetyl transferase(CAT) assay were performed. RESULTS: In studying the dose and time response effect of IL-10 on collagen synthesis, maximal reduction was seen at 1.0 ng/ml concentration and 24 hours incubation. The synthesis of type I collagen mRNA was downregulated, while stromelysin-1 gene expression was enhanced by IL-10. In the transient transfection and CAT assay, the type I collagen promoter/CAT reporter gene construct showed downregulation by IL-10, while the stromelysin-1 gene promoter activities were upregulated. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that IL-10 differently regulates the transcriptional levels of type I collagen and stromelysin-1 gene and denoting IL-10 seems to take part in the homeostasis of ECM at pretranscriptional level.

6.Expression of type IV collagen and laminin genes by skin fibroblasts in culture.

Basement membrane zone gene expression by fibroblast cultures was examined by molecular hybridizations with human sequence specific cDNAs corresponding to type 1V procollagen and laminin subunit polypeptides. Northern transfer analysis with total RNA revealed the presence of specific mRNA transcripts for al (IV) and a2 (1V) chains of type 1V procollagen as well as Bl and B2 chains of laminin. Laminin A chain mRNAs were not detected using the same RNA preparations. The molecular size of al (1V) and a2 (1V) procollagen mRNA revealed 6.8kb and 6.7kb, respectively. The molecular size of Bl chain of laminin revealed 5.6kb, and B2 chain revealed 8.2 and 5.5kb polymorphic transcripts. In slotblot analysis using densitometer, steady-state levels of type IV procollagen and laminin mRNAs indicated that they were in relatively low abunclance, as compaired with type I procollagen mRNA. Quantitative levels of al (IV) and laminin Bl chaii mRNAs were more abundant than those of a2 (IV) and laminin B2 mRNAs. The mRNA ratio of al (IV)/a2 (lV) and laminin Bl/B2 were 1.9 and 1.5, respectively. These results demonstrate evidence for differential regulation of the expression of different basement membrane zone molecules during the formation of basement membrane.

7.Splenic Lymphangioma: A case report.

Lymphangioma of the spleen is a rare neoplasm and approximately 100 cases have been reported in the world literature. This lesion may involve the spleen alone or may be a part of a syndrome of multivisceral involvement. The pathogenesis is unclear whether this is a true neoplasm of a developmental defect. We report a case of a 87-year-old woman with solitary splenic lymphangioma. The cut surface mass is not encapsulated and located at the subcapsular area in the mid portion of spleen. It is composed of variable sized cystic spaces containing myxoid tissue. Microscopic finding reveals dilated lymphatic spaces lined by endothelial cells and the content is proteinaceous eosinophilic fluid.

9.Modulation of collagen gene expression by colchicine.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinial observations have suggested that colchicine, which is in frequent use in gout can affect the conneciive tissue metabolism in skin and other ti.ues. OBJECTIVE: This study suggest that further development of colchiine might provide a novel means of modulating collagen gen expression in patients with fibrotic disease. METHOD: We examed the effect of colchicine on the expres, on of collagen, fibronectin and collagenase gene by skin filroblast culture hy Nort.hern and dot-blot iybridization. Result : The rate of transcription of genomic DNA corresponding o type I collagen and libvonectin was reduced in colchicine-treated cultures but collagenase was not. reduced. Canclusion : The microti.ikile disruptive agent, colchicine, reduced the expression of type I collagen and fibronectin in a dose-(lependent manner. This st.udy suppor that colchicine is one of the promising antifibrogenic drugs curvently being tested as a treatment, of hun an fibrotic disease.
