Purpose:
Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) is a syndrome of physiological and/or psychological functioning experienced by female and male athletes that is caused by exposure to problematic low energy availability. For the prevention and intervention of REDs, awareness of REDs among sports physicians is important, but it is largely unknown. This study aimed to survey the awareness and clinical treatment experience of REDs in sports physicians.
Methods:
We conducted an online survey to assess awareness of the triad and REDs among sports physicians and members of The Korean Society of Sports Medicine.
Results:
A total of 69 members (62.2% male, including sports physicians) to this survey. Most participants (84.1%) were aware of the triad compared to fewer with awareness regarding REDs (23.2%). People who knew about the difference between REDs and triad was 33.3%, which was lower than those who did not (66.6%). Only 10.1% of the study subjects had experience treating REDs patients, and the biggest difficulty in treating patients was a lack of information and education (50.7%). It appeared that the most information about REDs was obtained from academic conferences (59.4%).
Conclusion
This survey found relatively low awareness of REDs among physicians treating athletes and sports professionals. Considering the various negative effects of REDs on athlete health and performance, education and promotion are needed to increase awareness among sports physicians and sports professionals.

4.Experimental Study on Transverse-Axis Neovascularization of Acellular Dermal Matrix Using Platelet-Rich Plasma

Background:
Acellular dermal matrices (ADMs) have shown promise in promoting tissue regeneration; however, their integration in challenging cases with limited vertical-axis neovascularization remains difficult. This study investigates whether clinically meaningful transverse-axis neovascularization is identified in ADM engraftment and whether this can be further accelerated by platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Methods:
ADM and PRP-soaked ADM were implanted into New Zealand rabbits, and histological analysis was performed at different periods to compare neovascularization.
Results:
Histological analysis revealed that among 32 biopsy sites, there was transverse-axis neovascularization with an average length of 606.89 μm. When divided into two groups for assessing the impact of PRP on transverse-axis neovascularization, the extent of such neovascularization was measured as 582.99 μm in the control group and 630.79 μm in the experimental group. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P=0.693).
Conclusion
The results of the present study indicate that achieving meaningful transverse-axis neovascularization in implanted ADMs remains a challenge, warranting further investigation into ADM structure and vertical-axis neovascularization.

Background:
s/Aims: Reported incidence of extrahepatic bile duct cancer is higher in Asians than in Western populations. Korea, in particular, is one of the countries with the highest incidence rates of extrahepatic bile duct cancer in the world. Although research and innovative therapeutic modalities for extrahepatic bile duct cancer are emerging, clinical guidelines are currently unavailable in Korea. The Korean Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery in collaboration with related societies (Korean Pancreatic and Biliary Surgery Society, Korean Society of Abdominal Radiology, Korean Society of Medical Oncology, Korean Society of Radiation Oncology, Korean Society of Pathologists, and Korean Society of Nuclear Medicine) decided to establish clinical guideline for extrahepatic bile duct cancer in June 2021.
Methods:
Contents of the guidelines were developed through subgroup meetings for each key question and a preliminary draft was finalized through a Clinical Guidelines Committee workshop.
Results:
In November 2021, the finalized draft was presented for public scrutiny during a formal hearing.
Conclusions
The extrahepatic guideline committee believed that this guideline could be helpful in the treatment of patients.
8.Methyl Salicylate Poisoning Due to Suicidal Ingestion: A Case Report and Literature Review

Methyl salicylate is widely used in various topical products, including sports creams, ointments, patches, and oral hygiene products. These products are mainly used for localized treatment of musculoskeletal pain. Given their intended topical application, their ingestion can result in salicylic acid poisoning due to their high concentrations of methyl salicylate. Symptoms of salicylic acid poisoning may include dizziness, vomiting, hallucinations, seizures, and, in severe cases, unconsciousness, respiratory failure, and circulatory disorders. We report a case of a 71-year-old male who ingested Mensolatum Lotion to commit suicide and died.
9.The Significance of Detecting Diatoms in Spleen Tissue for the Postmortem Diagnosis of Drowning

The aim of this study was to elucidate the diatomological investigation and the forensic role of spleen tissue in cases of drowning or non-drowning. Specimens of spleen tissue and other organ tissue from 136 drowning cases, as well as 21 cases where death resulted from causes other than drowning (acting as controls), were examined for the presence of diatoms. The diatom test was performed on all cases using the acid digestion method, involving fumed nitric acid on a hot sand bath. The presence of diatoms in spleen tissue was observed in drowning cases but not in non-drowning cases. Diatoms in spleen tissue showed a positive association with drowning (P=0.011). Among the 136 drowning cases, diatoms were most frequently found in lung tissue (n=134, 99%), followed by spleen (n=33, 24%), kidney (n=28, 21%), liver (n=27, 20%), and heart (n=22, 16%) tissues. Moreover, in 95 cases where putrefaction did not progress, diatoms were detected in spleen tissues in 14 cases, indicating that the highest detection rate among other enclosed organ tissues, excluding lung tissues. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between the presence of diatoms in spleen tissue and those in enclosed organs, including the liver, kidney, and heart, but not in lung tissues. Our results revealed a significant correlation between the presence of diatoms in spleen tissue and drowning. Thus, the present study provides evidence that the presence of diatoms in spleen tissue may be a reliable indicator of death by drowning.
10.Postoperative major bleeding risk in patients using oral antiplatelets and/or anticoagulants after laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery

Purpose:
The use of antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapies has become common. In rare cases, these therapies may increase the risk of dangerous postoperative bleeding. We investigated the association of antiplatelets and/or anticoagulants with postoperative major bleeding risk in laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery.
Methods:
We retrospectively enrolled 3,663 gastric cancer patients (antiplatelet/anticoagulant group, 518; control group, 3,145) who had undergone laparoscopic surgery between January 2012 and December 2017. To minimize selection bias, 508 patients in each group were matched using propensity score matching (PSM) method. The primary outcome was postoperative major bleeding. Secondary outcomes were intraoperative, postoperative transfusion and early complications.
Results:
After PSM, postoperative major bleeding occurred in 10 (2.0%) and 3 cases (0.6%) in the antiplatelets/ anticoagulants and control groups, respectively (P = 0.090). Intraoperative and postoperative transfusions were not significantly different between 2 groups (2.4% vs. 1.4%, P = 0.355 and 5.5% vs. 4.3%, P = 0.469). Early complications developed in 58 (11.4%) and 43 patients (8.5%) in the antiplatelets/anticoagulants and control groups, respectively (P = 0.142). The mean amounts of intraoperative and postoperative transfusions were not significantly different between the groups (366.67 ± 238.68 mL vs. 371.43 ± 138.01 mL, P = 0.962; 728.57 ± 642.25 mL vs. 508.09 ± 468.95 mL, P = 0.185). In multivariable analysis, male (P = 0.008) and advanced stage (III, IV) (P = 0.024) were independent significant risk factors for postoperative major bleeding.
Conclusion
Preoperative antiplatelets and/or anticoagulants administration did not significantly increase the risk of postoperative major bleeding after laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery.
