A 45-year-old woman presented with a generalized fixed drug eruption due to mefenamic acid, characterized by recurring erythematous patches with central bullae on the same sites of the whole body and leaving hyperpigmentation after each attack. Patch testing of a quiescent lesion with 50% mefenamic acid in vaselin revealed an eczematous reaction after 48 hours. The disease course was mild compared to the severe clinical manifestation. We here-in report a case of generalized fixed drug eruption due to mefenamic acid which is considered a rare occurrence.

PURPOSE: This study was to evaluate effect of an educational program based upon experiment for smoking prevention in middle school students. METHOD: A quasi-experimental design was used. The participants were 107 middle school students (53 in the experimental group, 54 in the control group). Students in the experimental group participated in three 45-minute educational programs over a period of 2 weeks. The dependent variables were measured before and 2 & 4 weeks after the treatment. The data were analyzed using 2 test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. SPSS was used to aid analysis. RESULTS: 1) The experimental group showed higher levels of knowledge of smoking prevention compared to the control group. However this program did not affect their attitude towards smoking. 2) There was a higher possibility of smoking in the future among the students who had smoked than those who had not. 3) The majority (84.9%) of the experimental group said that the program was effective. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of smoking for the experimental group was increased, so it is assumed that the program itself had a positive effect on the students. To change attitudes regarding smoking, smoking prevention programs need to be conducted repeatedly, not just temporarily.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to show a relationship between health perception and health promoting behaviors in chronic low back pain patients. METHOD: The subjects for this study were 213 persons who the visited hospital with low back pain-related problems. RESULTS: The higher the levelof the health perception in chronic back pain patients was the higher the rate of the practice of health promoting behaviors (r=0.393, p<.001). The health perception T score was 50.00+/-10.00. As for health promoting behaviors, the T score was 49.99+/-10.00. The subscale of the highest mean score was interpersonal support (2.96+/-0.64) and the subscale of the lowest mean score was exercise (2.13+/-0.99). CONCLUSION: This study showed that chronic low back pain patients had a lower level of perception of their health, and their practice to improve their health was not enough. Therefore, nurses should educate and encourage chronic low back pain patients in proper exercises and correct posture to strengthen and maintain lumbar extension muscle power.

PURPOSE: This study was done to examine factors influencing loneliness in the elderly living in nursing homes. METHOD: The participants for this study were 150 adults, age 60 or over who had lived for one year or longer in two nursing homes in Gwangju. The questionnaires consisted of measurements of activities of daily living (ADL), social support and loneliness. Frequencies, percentages and means were used with Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, and Scheffe test to analyze the data. The analysis was done with SPSS 12.0 Stepwise multiple regression was used to identify significant factors influencing loneliness in the elderly living in nursing homes. RESULTS: Significant correlations were found between level of ADL and loneliness (r=-0.379, p<.001), support from friends and loneliness (r=-0.472, p<.001), and support from significant others and loneliness (r=-0.449, p<.001). Loneliness was significantly influenced by support from friends, ADL, and support from significant others. This regression model explained 29% of the variances in loneliness. CONCLUSION: The findings in this study suggest that improvement in support from friends and ADL can lead to a reduction in loneliness in the elderly living in nursing homes.

Present study was conducted to investigate the effects of exercise and cholesterol diet on plasma and liver lipids, platelet aggregation, erythrocyte Na efflux and liver index such as GOT and GPT using Sprague Dawley rats. Forty rats were divided into four groups and fed control or 0.5% cholesterol diet with and without treadmill for six weeks. The final body weight of group fed cholesterol diet with exercise was somewhat decreased compared with group fed cholesterol diet without exercise. L.W/B.W ratio was significantly increased in groups fed cholesterol diet (p < 0.01), but exercise tended to decrease this ratio. Plasma total cholesterol was significantly increased and HDL-cholesterol was decreased in groups fed cholesterol diet (p < 0.01). Plasma triglyceride was significantly decreased in groups fed cholesterol diet compared with groups fed control diet (p < 0.01). Plasma triglyceride of groups with exercise was significantly decreased compared with their non exercising counterparts regardless diet (p < 0.05). Liver total cholesterol and triglyceride was significantly increased in groups fed cholesterol diet (p < 0.01), but exercise did not affect on these levels. Na-K ATPase was somewhat decreased in groups fed cholesterol diet, and exercise tended to recover the reduced Na-K ATPase. Na passive transport was significantly decreased in group fed control diet without exercise and significantly increased in group fed cholesterol diet with exercise, there were significant differences between groups (p < 0.05). There were no differences in total Na efflux and intracellular Na among groups, and total Na efflux was not correlated with intracellular Na. Hematocrit was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in group fed cholesterol diet without exercise compared with other groups. Platelet aggregation in the initial slope and the maximum was increased in groups fed cholesterol diet, but not statistically significant. Exercise especially increased the initial slope of aggregation. Plasma GOT and GPT was significantly increased in groups fed cholesterol diet (p < 0.01), and exercise in group fed cholesterol diet significantly decreased both GOT and GPT compared with the non exercising counterpart (p < 0.01). This study showed that cholesterol diet increases plasma and liver lipids and GOT and GPT, and exercise improves plasma and liver lipid profile and liver index of GOT and GPT preventing fatty liver.

The gene product of bcl-2 (B-cell leukemia/lymphoma-2) was suggested to suppress programmed cell death (apoptosis) of tumor cells and be involved in the development of multiple myeloma. However, the normal plasma cells also express the protein. It is unclear whether the expression of bcl-2 in multiple myeloma is of normal character or of regulatory adaptation in association with neoplastic transformation. p53 was also suggested to be involved in tumor progression since mutations on p53 were found in multiple myeloma. In order to find the relationship between the expression patterns of bcl-2 and p53 in tumor cells of multiple myeloma and non-neoplastic plasma cells, we examined 38 cases of multiple myeloma and 10 cases of nasal polyp immunohistochemically. Furthermore, expression of bcl-2 and p53, mitosis, clinical stage and infiltrative pattern of tumor cells in bone marrow were also evaluated in association with the survival of patients. By immunostaining with anti-bcl-2 and p53 monoclonal antibody, 37 out of 38 cases of multiple myeloma and all of 10 cases of nasal polyp were positive for bcl-2 but only 7 cases of multiple myeloma were positive for p53. Marked dysplasia, low percentage of bcl-2 expression, and increased mitoses were correlated with poor prognosis. Based on these observations, we suggest that bcl-2 and p53 are involved in tumorigenesis of multiple myeloma and the survival of patients would be influenced by dysplastic change, mitosis and degree of bcl-2 expression.

Sexuality education in the period of adolescents need much care and attention. The programs of sexual education through the Internet are excellent resources for adolescents to gain the information related to their sexual health. And systematic program which is necessary for adolescents to manage their sexual health has been rarely found in Korea. The purpose of this study was to offer valuable database for program design and evaluation on sexual education of middle school students through the Internet. Needs assessment for the information of sexual education on the internet among middle school students were carried out. A questionnaire survey was conducted with respondents of 602 middle school students from January to March in 2002. In the sexual counseling center for middle school students, counseling cases through internet were analyzed and evaluated from October, 2001 to September, 2002, We have selected 16 Sexual educational websites in Seoul confirmed Korean Educational Human Resource. Contents which was illustrated in 16 sexual educational websites were analyzed and evaluated by 12 sexual counselors. Design and evaluation of the program on the internet for sexuality education of adolescences was conducted on the basis of this study results by middle school expert teachers, sexual counselors, sexuality education professionals. Data was statistically analyzed using dBSTAT 4.0 for Windows.The extent and phase of the teaching-learning program of the sexuality education on the internet was seen as follows :1. We evaluated to need for sexuality education on the internet by middle school student.2. We assessed the properness of sexuality education curriculum on the internet frequently used by middle school students.3. We designed teaching strategy and learning program for sexuality education of the middle school students. 4. We developed the assessment method for the teaching-learning program of the sexuality education in adolescences on the internet.Middle school students responded that sexual education through Internet is needed in the order of programs related to acquaintances with opposite sex, Sexual culture and ethics, Sexual health, Reproductive health structure and development, Marriage and family, Psychology of Sexuality, Pregnancy and birth. In the internet counseling, cases on the 'reproductive health structure and development' was ranked as the top. In short we have found the most needs as follows; Meaning of the marriage life and having family, Sexes and Love, Human relation, Sexual Culture.We recommend as follows on the basis of this study results: 1. It is necessary for sexuality education program on the internet to specify acccording to age and target the specific individual needs. 2. Sexual educators have to employ various educational materials such as flash, cartoon, multimedia in order to provide effective sexuality education. 3. Internet based sex education need to be evaluated regularly through reassessment of the effectiveness of sexuality education for content quality and richness.
