2.Arthroscope - Assisted Modified Weaver and Dunn Operation for Acromioclavicular Dislocation.

There is still discussion concerning the methods for treating Tossy type 3 dislocations of the acromioclavicular joint. Since 1995, the authors have treated 10 patients of type 3 dislocations by arthroscope-assisted modified Weaver and Dunn operation with favorable results. The operation consisted of diagnostic shoulder arthroscopy, arthroscopic resection of acromial end of coracoacromial ligament with bone block, excision of distal end of clavicle, bone block transfer of coracoacromial ligament into the medullary canal of clavicle, and augmentation between coracoid process and resected distal end of clavicle with the Mersilene tape. The advantages of this arthroscope-assisted modified Weaver and Dunn operation are as follows: (1) Using the shoulder arthroscope, associated patholgy in the shoulder joint can be found and treated appropriately. (2) Arthroscopic resection of the acromial end of coracoacromial ligament can give the small incision and least damage to the deltoid muscle so that immediate post-operative range of motion exercise can be possible. (3) Bone block transfer of coracoacromial ligament and augmentation between coracoid process and resected clavicular end can prevent displacement of the resected clavicular end.

3.Partial characterization of a 29 kDa cysteine protease purified from Taenia solium metacestodes.

A 29 kDa cysteine protease of Taenia solium metacestodes was purified by Mono Q anion-exchanger and Superose 6 HR gel filtration chromatography. The enzyme was effectively inhibited by cysteine protease inhibitors, such as iodoacetic acid (IAA) and trans-epoxy-succinyl-L-leucyl-amido (4-guanidino) butane (E-64) while inhibitors acting on serine- or metallo-proteases did not affect the enzyme activity. The purified enzyme degraded human immunoglobulin G (IgG), collagen and bovine serum albumin (BSA), but human IgG was more susceptible for proteolysis by the enzyme. To define the precise biological roles of the enzyme, more detailed biochemical and functional studies would be required.

4.Morphological Studies on the Calbindin D-28K and Parvalbumin Immunoreactive Neurons in the Medulla Oblongata and Ventral Horn of the Spinal Cord Gray Matter after Spinal Cord Injury in Rats.

This study was examined and compared the immunocytochemical distribution of the two calcium-binding proteins calbindin D-28K and parvalbumin immunreactive neurons in the medulla oblongata and spinal cord after transection of spinal cord in rats. In this experiment, calbindin D-28K immnunoreactive neurons were mainly found in many pyramidal cells distributed medulla oblongata and spina1 cord of rats. Parvalbumin immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in all lamina of the gray matter of the spinal cord. These immunoreactive cells had the most high density in the severa1 nuclei of the ventra1 horn of the all segments of the spina1 cord. Calbindin D-28K neuropil labeling was strongly noted in spina1 all segments of the spinal cord. In contrast parva1bumin immunoreactive, little differences were found in distribution, size and morphology of calbindin D-28K cell body or neuropil staining in the spinal cord. The number of parvalbumin immunoreactive cells were more than twice in the medulla oblongata and spinal cord compared to the calbindin D-28K immunoreactive cells. Calbindin D-28K and parvalbumin-immmoreactive somata were round, ova1, spind1e and polygona1 in shape, and the immunoreactive neurons were unipolar, bipolar, multipolar and horizontal in shape. The diameters of the somata of the two immunoreactive neurons were 40 ~50 micrometer, respectively. Also dendrites of two immunoreactive neurons were densely arrayed in network. These results suggest that CB-IR and PV-IR most high density in the of the VII~X layers in the ventra1 horn of the all segments of the spina1 cord.

5.Effect of Intrauterine Growth Restriction on Cell Proliferation in the Fetal Cerebellum of the Guinea Pig.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a risk factor for neurological and behavioral deficits in children although the precise underlying biological mechanisms are unclear. It is also unclear whether IUGR affects cell proliferation in the cerebellum, which is vulnerable to prenatal insults during brain development. The aim of this study is to determine whether IUGR affects the alteration of cell proliferation in the fetal cerebellum and whether this change correlate with reduction in the growth of cerebellum. IUGR was induced via unilateral ligation of the uterine artery in pregnant guinea pigs at 30 days of gestation (dg; term ~67 dg) to produce growth restricted (GR) fetuses. Fetal (control, n=7 and GR, n=7) body and organ weights at 60 dg were measured and Ki67 immunohistochemistry was performed to detect cell proliferation. The width of the external granular layer (EGL) was also measured at 60 dg. The mean body and organ weights of GR fetuses at 60 dg were significantly reduced. The proportion of proliferating cells to the total cell number in the EGL was not different in GR compared with control animals but the width of the EGL was significantly increased in GR animals. These results demonstrate that significant reductions in the growth of the cerebellum do not have a well-defined relationship to cell proliferation in IUGR guinea pig fetuses. In addition, despite there was no difference in the proportion of proliferating to post-mitotic cells between control and GR fetuses in the EGL at 60 dg, the width of the EGL was increased in GR fetuses compared to controls. This could be interpreted as a delay in the process of cell production or migration.

6.Usefulness of 8 kDa protein of Fasciola hepatica in diagnosis of fascioliasis.

This study was designed to detect and evaluate an antigenicity of low molecular weight proteins of Fasciola hepatica in fascioliasis. Low molecular weight protein of F. hepatica was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and Sephacryl S-100 HR gel filtration. The protein obtained was estimated to be 8 kDa on 7.5-15% gradient sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis. Immunoblotting studies showed that the 8 kDa protein reacted with human fascioliasis sera, but not other trematodiasis sera. This result suggests that the 8 kDa protein of F. hepatica is one of diagnostic antigens in human fascioliasis without cross-reaction with other human trematodiasis.

8.Body image perceptions and its related problems of local high school students.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the trend pursuing slimness is significantly increasing in adolescents. Because of distorted body image, excessive body weight control can cause problems of health. The goal of this study is to investigate the factors of distorted body image and its problems. METHODS: The survey was performed in a high school of Jindo island on May, 2000. All of 258 students in 1st and 2nd grade participated in this study by questionnaires. Thirteen truthless questionnaires were excluded in this study. Therefore 245 student were selected. RESULTS: Only 20% of 245 repliers were satisfied with their body figure. In male, 24.1% wanted weight loss, and 39.8% wanted weight gain. In female, 73% wanted weight loss. In a populations(BMI<20), 70 males wanted weight loss, whereas 35(52.2%) among 67 females want weight loss. According to these result, female stuedents wanted strongly weight loss than male. The factors which most influenced body figure were sports star in males(36.1%), and movie stars in female.(43.8%) A group of 58.4% of repliers has experienced body weight control. A group of 37% in male and 39.6% in female suffered from side effects. 77% of total hoped to be educated about adequate body weight control method. CONCLUSION: Almost of adolescents dissatisfied with their body figure, Many adolescent who is not obese attempt weight loss, and are sufferd from side effects. Therefore, it is required for effective education about body weight control and social attitude permitting adequate body image.

10.A case of pelvic retroperitoneal benign schwannoma presenting as a gynecologic malignancy with pulmonary thromboembolism.

Retroperitoneal schwannomas are rare tumors difficult to diagnose preoperatively. It may originate at the cranial nerves or nerves of the upper extremities, but origin along the nerves of the retroperitoneal space is very rare. Most of the retroperitoneal schwannomas are benign neoplasm. These tumor can be misdiagnosed as adnexal mass or carcinoma. Venous thromboembolism or pulmonary embolism is increasingly recognized as a common complication in patients with malignant disease. We report a 37-year-old woman presented with pulmonary thromboembolism and a pelvic mass which was incidentally found and misdiagnosed as ovarian cancer. Histopathologic results of the extirpated mass turned out to be a benign schwannoma.
