Thiphalangeal thumb is characterized by interposition of an extraphalanx between the two normal phalanges of the thumb. The extra-phalanx varies from a small triangular bone to a normal phalanx in what appears to be a thumbless five fingered hand. Triphalangeal thumbs are divided into three types and the treatment differs from associated anomalies and clinical features. We had a bilateral triphalangeal thumbs treated by closed wedge osteotomy to the extra-phalanx.

2.A comparative study of the tongue, mandible and hyoid bone position between the adenoid hypertrophied children and the normal children.
Korean Journal of Orthodontics 1986;16(2):99-106
The author studied 21 adenoid hypertrophied children and 50 normal children by the horizontal, vertical and angular measurements to analyze, the effects of the lymphadenoid hypertrophy to the tongue, mandible, and hyoid bone position. The results were as follows; 1. The tongue of the Adenoid hypertrophy children was positioned more anterior and lower than that of the normal children. 2. The horizontal, vertical, and angular measurements of the mandible position were larger in the experimental group and especially ANS to ME, PNS to MP, PTM to MP, PP to MP, FOP to MP showed statistically significant difference. 3. The measurements of the hyoid bone position were also larger in the experimental group.

The purpose of this study is to observe and compare the remineralization tendencies of artificially demineralized enamel by remineralization solutions of different degree of saturations at pH 5.5, using a polarizing microscope and computer programs (Photoshop, Image pro plus, Scion Image, Excel). For this study, 36 sound permanent teeth with no signs of demineralization, cracks, or dental restorations were used. The specimens were immersed in lactic acid demineralization solution for 3 days in order to produce dental caries artificially that consist of surface and subsurface lesions. Each of 9 or 10 specimens was immersed in pH 5.5 lactic acid buffered remineralization solution of three different degrees of saturation (0.25, 0.30, 0.35) for 12 days. After the demineralization and remineralization, images were taken by a polarizing microscope (x 100). The results were obtained by observing images of the specimens, and using computer programs, the density of caries lesions were determined. In conclusion, in the group with the lowest degree of saturation, remineralization occurred thoroughly from the surface to the subsurface lesion, whereas in the groups with greater degree of saturation showed no significant change in the subsurface lesion, although there was corresponding increase in the remineralization width on the surface zones.

Journal of Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2009;34(1):20-29
The purpose of this study is to observe and compare the dynamic change of artificially demineralized enamel by remineralization solutions of different degrees of saturation at pH 4.3. In this study, 30 enamel specimens were demineralized artificially by lactic acid buffered solution. Each of 10 specimens was immersed in pH 4.3 remineralization solution of three different degrees of saturation (0.22, 0.30, 0.35) for 10 days. After demineralization and remineralization, images were taken by a polarizing microscope (x 100). The density of lesion were determined from images taken after demineralization and remineralization. During remineralization process, mineral deposition and mineral loss occurred at the same time. After remineralization, total mineral amount and width of surface lesion increased in all groups. The higher degree of saturation was, the more mineral deposition occurred in surface lesion and the amount of mineral deposition was not much in subsurface lesion. Total demineralized depth increased in all groups.

Mood and Emotion 2024;22(1):19-26
Background:
Phentermine-topiramate (PT) and naltrexone-bupropion (NB) are widely used combination treatments for obesity and overweight. However, no study has yet compared the efficacy and safety of the two drugs in patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders.
Methods:
A retrospective chart review of patients who were prescribed with the PT and NB combination treatments was conducted from January 1, 2017, to August 31, 2023. To compare the treatment efficacy, the mean body mass index change rates of both drugs before and after drug use were calculated. The safety of the drug was compared by identifying whether the drug was discontinued early and any side effects that occurred.
Results
A total of 55 patients were enrolled, most of whom were women (89.1%), and the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder was depressive disorder (37.5% for NB and 40.0% for PT). No demographic differences were observed between the patients using the two drugs. The two drugs showed no statistically significant difference in the treatment efficacy. However, in terms of safety, PT had a lower incidence of adverse effects than NB (6.7% vs.40.0%, p=0.022) Conclusion: No significant difference in the treatment efficacy between PT and NB was observed, but PT showed a more favorable safety profile in psychiatric patients. Further large-scale multicenter studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Nutrition Research and Practice 2014;8(5):526-532
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Acanthopanax sessiliflorus is a native Korean plant and used as traditional medicine or an ingredient in many Korean foods. The free radical theory of aging suggests that cellular oxidative stress caused by free radicals is the main cause of aging. Free radicals can be removed by cellular anti-oxidants. MATERIALS/METHODS: Here, we examined the anti-oxidant activity of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus extract both in vitro and in vivo. Survival of nematode C. elegans under stress conditions was also compared between control and Acanthopanax sessiliflorus extract-treated groups. Then, anti-aging effect of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus extract was monitored in C. elegans. RESULTS: Stem extract significantly reduced oxidative DNA damage in lymphocyte, which was not observed by leaves or root extract. Survival of C. elegans under oxidative-stress conditions was significantly enhanced by Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem extract. In addition, Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem increased resistance to other environmental stresses, including heat shock and ultraviolet irradiation. Treatment with Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem extract significantly extended both mean and maximum lifespan in C. elegans. However, fertility was not affected by Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem. CONCLUSION: Different parts of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus have different bioactivities and stem extract have strong anti-oxidant activity in both rat lymphocytes and C. elegans, and conferred a longevity phenotype without reduced reproduction in C. elegans, which provides conclusive evidence to support the free radical theory of aging.
