A preparation of water soluble components(EA) was made from carpophores of Elfvingia applanata(Pers.) Karst and its in vitro antibacterial activity on a number of bacterial species was examined by macrobroth dilution assay. Among 16 species of bacteria tested, the most potent antibacterial activity was observed against Staphylococcus epiderrnidis and Proteus vulgaris, of which MICs were 1.25 mg/ml. To investigate the antibacterial effects in combinations of EA with quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, enoxacin, lomefloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin, the fractional inhibitory concentrations(FICs) and the fractional inhibitory concentration indices(FICIs) for four bacterial strains were determined by macrobroth dilution checkerboard assay. Combinations of EA and quinolones exhibited either additive or indifferent effects of antibacterial activity in most instances. However, both synergistic and antagonistic effects were not observed in any cases.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2003;44(6):1243-1248
PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and complication rate of our modified continuous buried suture technique for the correction of the upper lid epiblepharon. METHODS: This retrospective study included 132 eyes of 66 patients, who were diagnosed with upper lid epiblepharon from March 2000 through April 2002 After the followup of over 6 months, we evaluated the improvement and recurrent rate of epiblepharon after the procedure. RESULTS: In 131 of 132 eyes with the mean followup period of 12.9 months, the epiblepharon was corrected successfully with cosmetically satisfactory Results. In 1 eye, we experienced the disappearance of a double fold without the recurrence of the epiblepharon. CONCLUSIONS: This modified continuous buried suture Method appears to be an effective treatment of lash inversion in upper lid epiblepharon with good aesthetic Results.

BACKGROUND: Because of the common etiologic factor, such as smoking, lung cancer and chronic obstructive Pulmonary disease are often present in the same patient. The preoperative prediction of remaining pulmonary function after the resectional surgery is very important to prevent serious complication and postoperative respiratory failure. 99mTc-MAA perfusion scan has been used for the prediction of postoperative pulmonary function, but it may be inaccurate in case of large V/Q mismatching. We compared 99mTc-DTPA radioaerosol inhalation scan with 99mTc-MAA perfusion scan in predicting postoperative lung function. METHOD: Preoperative inhalation scan and/or perfusion scan were performed and pulmonary function test were performed preoperatively and 2 month after operation. We predicted the postoperative pulmonary functions using the following equations. Postpneumonectomy FEV1=Preop FEV1x% of total function of lung to remain RESULTS: 1) The inhalation scan showed good correlations between measured and predicted FEV1, FVC and FEF25-75%. (correlation coefficiency; 0.94, 0.91, 0.87 respectively). 2) The perfusion scan also showed good correlations between measured and predicted FEV1, FVC and FEF25-75%. (correlation coefficiency; 0.86, 0.72, 0.97 respectively). 3) Among three parameters, FEV1 showed the best correlations in the prediction by lung scans. 4) Comparison between inhalation scan and perfusion scan in predicting pulmonary function did not show any significant differneces except FVC. CONCLUSION: The inhalation scan and perfusion scan are very useful in the prediction of postoperative lung function and don't make a difference in the prediction of pulmonary function although the former showed a better correlation in FVC.

Antibacterial activity of EA, a preparation of water soluble components made from carpophores of Elfvingia applanata (Pers.) Karst, was examined by macrobroth diltution method against a number of bacterial species. Antibacterial effects of EA were expressed as minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for growth. Among twelve species of bacteria tested, six strains of each gram positive bacteria and gram negative bacteria, EA showed the most potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Proteus vulgaris, of which MICs were 1.25 mg/ml of EA. To investigate the antibacterial effects of combinations of EA with third generation cepholosporins, such as cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, and cefixime, the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) and fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) were determined by macrodilution checkerboard assay for twelve bacterial strains. Combinations of EA and third generation cephalosporins exhibited either additive or indifferent effects in most instances. However, synergistic effects were observed in six instances. No antagonistic effect was observed in any cases.
