1.Values of Urine Cytology in the Diagnosis of Urothelial Carcinomas.

In order to determine its accuracy the authors conducted cytologic examination on patients found to have urothelial carcinoma by cystoscopy, histopathologic and radiological examinations at the Department of Urology, Catholic Medical College, from January 1971 to August 1981. The results were as follows: 1. Age distribution of the urothelial carcinomas is from 33 to 80 years age and the most frequent age group is 40 to 59 years age. The male: female ratio is 4.3:1. 2. Of the 32 patients, 4 cases (12.4%) were negative, 14 (43.8%) suspicious and 14 (43.8%) positive reports. 3. No significant correlations were found between the urine cytology and histologic grade, but the higher cytologic class had tendency to have the higher histologic grade. 4. In the aspect of the tumor size and cytology, large sized tumor had showed positive findings more frequently than that of, smaller one, but it showed high accuracy rate (77.8%) when small sized tumors were multiple.

3.Generation and Characterization of Alloenic Radiation Bone Marrow Chimera.

Allogenic bone marrow chimera has been used to study the differentiation of donor-derived bone marrow cells under the recipient thymic environment, tolerance generaion between recipient and donor cells. We prepared H-2' to H-2 allogenic chimera by transfering bone marrow cells from H-2dmice to r-irradiated H-2k mice, and examined the differentiation ofthe bone marrow cells under allogenic environment. Complete reconstitution with H-2d+ phenotype cells in the thymus of the chimera mice was observed. However, the number of CD4- CD8+ cells dramatically decreased under the recipient thymic environment, CD8+ cells significantly reduced also in spleen and lymph node, compared with that of normal mice. Interestingly, we also observed coexistence of donor-derived cells (H-2k) and recipient derived cells (H-2d) in lymph node and spleen in the chimera. These results suggested that the decrease of CD4-CD8+ cells could be caused by r-irradiation by affecting the recipient thymic environment, and that in this chimera, tolerance between donor-derived cells and recipient-derived cells was maintained.

9.Presence of E-cadherin in Cultured Amnionic Cells.

OBJECTIVES: Cell adhesion molecules may play a role in integrating amnionic membrane. The objective of this study was to prove E-cadherin mRNA and proteins in cultured human amnionic cells. METHODS: We cultured amnionic cells from 4 women undergoing cesarean section without labor. E-cadherin was determined by immunohistochemistry and Western ligend blotting. To demonstrate E-cadherin mRNA, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed. RESULTS: On immunohistochemistry, E-cadherin was abundantly showed on the cytoplasm of the cells. Western ligend blotting showed clear 120 kDa bands on four specimens, and relatively weak band on one specimen. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction showed 432 BP bands. CONCLUSION: We proved E-cadherin and its mRNA by immunohistochemistry, Western ligend blotting and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in cultured human amnionic cells.

10.A Comparative Clinical analysis of Arthroscopic Meniscectomy and Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair

There have been controversies on the rationale, surgicl indication, technique and results of meniscus repair.. Authors comparatively studied 100 cases of meniscus injury in 88 patients (arthroscopic total menisectomy: 16 cases, arthroscopic partial menisectomy: 68 cases, arthroscopic meniscus suturing: 16 cases) from February 1985 to March 1992. The results were as follows: 1. Male (61.4%) was much more affected than female. 2. The third decade group was most commonly affected and the most common causes was sports injury (43.2%) 3. The lateral meniscus was more injured (71%), than the medial (29%) 4. In arthroscopic finding, longitudinal tear (37%) was the most common. 5. According to the Tapper and Hoover's criteria, satisfactory result was 56.3% in arthroscopic meniscus repair group.
