To evaluate the effects of Dexamethasone(Dex), Platelet derived growth factor-BB(PDGF) and combination of Dex and PDGF(DP) on the growth and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells, Dex(10(-7) M) and PDGF(10 ng/ml) in experimental group were added to the cells at the days 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and examined for cell proliferation activities, DNA synthesis activities, ALP activities and bone nodule formation. The results were as follows : 1.In Dex group, cell proliferation, DNA synthesis and ALP activities were lower until 15 days when compared to the control group. Bone nodules formation were shown at 10 days. 2.In PDGF group, cell proliferation and DNA synthesis activities were higher until 15 days and ALP activities were lower when compared to the control and Dex groups. Bone nodules formation were shown at 20 days. 3.In DP group, cell proliferation and DNA synthesis activities of PDGF were suppressed by Dex and synergistic effects of combination of Dex and PDGF on ALP activities were shown at days 5 when compared to control and Dex groups. Bone nodules formation activities of Dex were suppressed by PDGF.

PURPOSE: Neutrophils are central to the defences against bacterial infection, and in neonates the number of neutrophils are decreased due to inhibited production and phagocytic function. This induces high mortality rates in infants suffering from neonatal sepsis. Exogenous GM-CSF can increase the number of neutrophils and improve the phagocytic function. To establish the most cost effective dose of exogenous granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor in infected neonates, we divided infected patients into two groups. The serum level of granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, white blood cell count and absolute granulocyte count were compared. METHODS: This study included 22 infants with infection, admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Chungnam National University Hospital, between February 1998 and September 1999. Infected infants were divided into two treatment groups with exogenous GM-CSF 3 microgram/kg/day & 10 microgram/kg/day. The total WBC count, the absolute granulocyte count and the serum GM-CSF concentration of peripheral blood before use of GM-CSF, and those of 2nd, 5th and 7th day after use were compared. RESULTS: In 3 microgram/kg/day group, WBC count and the absolute granulocyte count and the serum GM-CSF concentration reached a peak after the 2nd injection of GM-CSF. In 10 microgram/kg/day group, the WBC count and the absolute granulocyte count increased gradually until 7th day. There was tendency for the total WBC counts, the absolute granulocyte count and the serum GM-CSF concentration of peripheral blood in 10 microgram/kg group to increase more than those of 3 microgram/kg group, after exogenous GM-CSF treatment. CONCLUSION: In neonates, we propose the exogenous GM-CSF treatment 10 microgram/kg/day as being more effective than 3 microgram/kg/day protocol, which is one of the safest and most effective methods to increase the total WBC count, the absolute granulocyte count and the serum GM-CSF concentration of peripheral blood.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between satisfaction in major, career decision-making self-efficacy and career identity of nursing students. METHODS: Data were collected from 543 students by means of self reported questionnaires about satisfaction in major, career decision-making self-efficacy and career identity from November 26 to 30, 2012. RESULTS: The average score of satisfaction in major, career decision-making self-efficacy and career identity of nursing students was 3.56 on a 5 point-scale, 3.28 on a 5 point-scale, and 2.65 on a 4 point-scale respectively. There were significant correlation between satisfaction in major, career decision-making self-efficacy and career identity of nursing students. Career identity could be explained 26.2% by satisfaction in major, career decision-making self-efficacy, admission motivation, and school grade. CONCLUSION: Career identity was correlated with satisfaction in major and career decision-making self-efficacy in nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an effective intervention program to improve nursing students's satisfaction in major, career decision-making self-efficacy and career identity.

Dermatofibroma with granular cells is composed mainly of spindle shaped cells mixed with in-conspicuous foamy cells that contain granular cytoplasm. We present a case of dermatofibroma with granular cells in a 36-year-old male who visited our clinic to evaluate a slow-growing nodule on the medial side of the left lawer leg. He have had the nodule for five years and sometimes felt an itching sensation. Biopsy of the nodule identified a dermal nodular tumor showing cellular spindle cell proliferation admixed with peripheral foamy histiocytes. With the immunohistochemical staining, the granular cell was positive for alpha-1-antitrypsin and CD68, and negative for S-100. A few electron-dense granules were seen in the cytoplasm on the electronmicroscopic study. These results suggested that the granular cells originated from histiocytes.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of glomerular cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) overexpression on podocyte injury by puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN) in nephrin-driven COX-2 transgenic mice. METHODS: We administrated PAN intravenously on day-1 (15 mg/100 g body weight) and day-3 (30 mg/100 g body weight) in wild type (male B6/D2 mice) and COX-2 transgenic mice. An additional group received a selective COX-2 inhibitor (SC58236) with PAN. The animals from each group were sacrificed at the end of day-3 and 10. We investigated albuminuria, foot process effacement and glomerular COX-2 and nephrin expression. RESULTS: PAN induced albuminuria only in COX-2 transgenic mice, with the peak on day-3. Selective COX-2 inhibition significantly reduced albuminuria. EM examination demonstrated foot process effacement, which was improved partially by selective COX-2 inhibition, in COX-2 transgenic mice treated with PAN on day-3. Glomerular COX-2 expression increased significantly on day-3 in COX-2 transgenic mice treated with PAN, whereas expression of nephrin showed a tendency to decrease on day-3. These changes of expression of COX-2 and nephrin were partly attenuated by selective COX- 2 inhibition. Unlike COX-2 transgenic mice, wild-type mice did not show any changes even after PAN treatment. CONCLUSION: In COX-2 transgenic mice, PAN induced albuminuria, podocyte injury and up-regulation of glomerular COX-2, which were ameliorated by selective COX-2 inhibitor. These results suggest that COX-2 may play an important role in increasing susceptibility of podocytes to injury and selective COX-2 inhibition may ameliorate podocyte injury.

Authors examined 40,000 minifilms(boys and girls each 10,000 in junior and senior high schools) which were taken for survey of pulmonary tuberculosis for junior and senior high school students and checked the prevalence of scoliosis. It was considered lateral curvature of spine more than 10 degrees as nonpostural scoliosis, which were analyzed prevalence rate, degree of curvature, distribution of size of curvature, pattern of curve and direction of curvature. Following results were obtained. 1. The overall prevalence rate was 1.56; male 1.38. and female 1.70%(Junior high school 1.06%, Senior high school 2.05%). 2. Scoliosis secondary due to bony abnormality was found in 5 cases. 3. The most common pattern of curvature was the thoracic curve. 4. In sihgle curve, right to left ratio was 1.7, especially senior high school girls had more right curve and junior high school boys had more left curve. 5. The prevalence of senior high school students was greater than that of junior high school students and the degree of curvature was also severe in senior high school students than in junior high school students.
