PURPOSE: This study was conducted to analyze the factors that influence the life satisfaction of the elderly according to their cognitive impairment level. METHODS: This study was conducted by dividing 3,012 elderly residents of a regional community into three groups based on the scores of the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination: a normal group without any cognitive impairment, a suspicious group with a mild level of cognitive impairment, and a high risk group with a high level of cognitive impairment. Researchers made phone calls, house calls, and personal visits to health centers and shelters for the elderly to gather the information required for this study. RESULTS: The results of this study revealed that social relationships, depression, and activities of daily living had a significant impact on life satisfaction for the normal group, while social relationships and depression had a high impact on life satisfaction for the suspicious group, and social relationships had high impact on the life satisfaction of the high risk group. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, we suggest that programs that promote development of the social relationship networks of the elderly should be established to promote their life satisfaction.

Trichothiodystrophy Syndromes*

PURPOSE: This study was to identify the relationship between personality type, college admission SAT scores and GPA scores of student nurses. METHOD: The data was collected from 270 student nurses enrolled in a baccaleaureate program in Seoul. MBTI was used to identify students' personality and SAT score and GPA score were collected over 4 years. The collected data was analyzed by using SPSS Win. package. RESULT: 1. There were slightly more extrovert (E) type (54.4%) students than the introvert (I) type; more sensing (S) type (71.1%) than the intuitive (N) type. 2. The introvert type students had significantly higher SAT scores than those of the extrovert type (p=.002). 3. The judging type students had significantly higher GPA scores throughout their college years than the perceiving type. 4. There was no statistically significant relationship between SAT and GPA scores. SAT scores did not accurately predict students' academic achievement in college in this sample. CONCLUSION: The distribution of the personality types in the sample was different from the general population which may suggest that college admission criteria is biased toward certain personality type. Since different personality types process information and cope with the outside world differently, effective teaching strategies need to be considered for each class.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a recently recognized clinicopathologic entity characterized by dilatation of pancreatic duct filled with copious mucin and papillary ductal epithelial proliferation ranging from simple hyperplasia to invasive carcinoma. The exact clinicopathologic identification of this tumor is important because of favorable prognosis contrast to that of conventional ductal adenocarcinoma. Herein we report a case of surgically resected typical IPMN. A 59-year-old man had a long history of diabetes mellitus with epigastric pain of 4 months duration. Ultrasonography and computed tomographic examination revealed cystic dilatations of main pancreatic duct in the head. The patient underwent total pancreatectomy. The gross appearance showed diffuse dilatation of main pancreatic duct associated with cystic dilatation of subbranches in the uncinate process. Histologic examination revealed diffuse papillary proliferations lined by mucinous epithelium with mild atypism within ectatic ducts. No invasive carcinoma was noted. Histochemically, the papillary epithelium contained mostly neutral and acid sialomucin.

Faculty evaluation in medical schools is a necessary procedure to improve the quality of the faculty and ultimately of the educational program. This article emphasizes an establishment of baseline strategies on designing the faculty evaluation programs prior to the development of basic guidelines to evaluate individual faculty activities. We propose, in this article, three baseline strategies in developing a faculty evaluation program. First, all of elements of faculty activities should be closely assessed, equally measured and balanced in light of the medical school's needs. From this point of view, clinical services should be assessed separately from the public service category because clinical services are special duties of clinical faculties in medical schools. Faculty track system including clinical track is one of the effective strategy to evaluate the activities of clinical faculties. Second, determining criteria should be developed with the understanding that they will clearly define the concepts of minimum requirements Third, for a more pertinent and effective faculty evaluation, various qualitative as well as quantitative methods must be used.

BACKGROUND: Pregabalin is an anticonvulsant and analgesic agent that interacts selectively with the voltage-sensitive-Ca(2+)-channel alpha-2-delta subunit. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the analgesic action of intrathecal (IT) pregabalin is associated with KATP channels in the rat formalin test. METHODS: IT PE-10 catheters were implanted in male Sprague-Dawley rats (250-300 g) under inhalation anesthesia using enflurane. Nociceptive behavior was defined as the number of hind paw flinches during 60 min after formalin injection. Ten min before formalin injection, IT drug treatments were divided into 3 groups: normal saline (NS) 20 microl (CON group); pregabalin 0.3, 1, 3 and 10 microg in NS 10 microl (PGB group); glibenclamide 100 microg in DMSO 5 microl with pregabalin 0.3, 1, 3 and 10 microg in NS 5 microl (GBC group). All the drugs were flushed with NS 10 microl. Immunohistochemistry for the KATP channel was done with a different set of rats divided into naive, NS and PGB groups. RESULTS: IT pregabalin dose-dependently decreased the flinching number only in phase 2 of formalin test. The log dose response curve of the GBC group shifted to the right with respect to that of the PGB group. Immunohistochemistry for the KATP channel expression on the spinal cord dorsal horn showed no difference among the groups 1 hr after the formalin test. CONCLUSIONS: The antinociceptive effect of pregabalin in the rat formalin test was associated with the activation of the KATP channel. However, pregabalin did not induce KATP channel expression in the spinal cord dorsal horn.

Contact urticaria refers to a wheal-and-flare response after cutaneous exposure to certain chemicals. If contact urticaria is accompanied by systemic symptoms, it is referred to as contact urticaria syndrome. Herein we report two cases of contact urticaria syndrome occur-ring in nurses due to occupational exposure to cefotiam.
