Journal of the Korean Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 2011;22(4):294-301
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated factors related to suicide in high school students and focused on perceived academic performance. METHODS: We surveyed 293 grade 10 high-school students in Jeju and Gyeonggi provinces and gave them self-assessment questionnaires. To evaluate the suicide risk, the questionnaire included questions about suicidal thoughts, plans, threats, deliberate self-injury, and suicide attempts from the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI). Also, it included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Locus of Control Scale (LOC), Rosenberg's Self Esteem Scale (RSE) and Perceived Academic Performance (PAP) to identify factors related to suicide in high school students. RESULTS: Depression, hopelessness, and low self-esteem were related with suicidal thoughts, plans, attempts, and severe suicidal ideation (SSI score> or =16). In the multivariate analysis, a low level of PAP (OR=3.796, 95%CI 1.280-11.257) was significantly associated with severe suicidal ideation (SSI score> or =16). Deliberate self-injury was most prevalent in failing the PAP group and also having a high level of PAP (OR=6.161, 95%CI 1.474-25.760). CONCLUSION: The authors found that the suicide risk of high school students is related to depression, hopelessness, low self-esteem and a low level of PAP. These results provide significant indicators in planning an adolescent suicide prevention program.

There are few methods to control heavy intra-operative bleeding during cesarean delivery of placenta previa. Transient occlusion of uterine arteries (TOUA) during operation has previously been reported as a quick and safe method to control intra-operative uterine bleeding. We reported 2 cases of cesarean delivery with complete placenta previa in which TOUA was performed to safely reduce intra-operative complication, especially heavy intra-operative bleeding. In the 2 cases, cesarean deliveries were safe and without any complications under the TOUA method. TOUA can be a good method to control heavy intra-operative bleeding during cesarean delivery of complete placenta previa with risk of heavy bleeding.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated a possible use of the induced apoptosis as a biomarker in the cells and their media treated with commonly used anti-cancer agents in gynecologic malignancies. METHODS: After treatments with low and high concentrations of paclitaxel, cisplatin, and camptothecin in HeLa and OVCAR-3 cells, the levels of M30 antigen were detected in the cells and their media by immunofluorescence staining and ELISA methods, respectively. RESULTS: The percentages of M30-fluoresein isothiocyanate (FITC) positive cells in HeLa and OVCAR-3 cells treated with paclitaxel, cisplatin, and camptothecin were 4.3% vs 18.1% vs 34.87% and 4.07% vs 18.6% vs 32.63%, 4.3% vs 17.87% vs 32.38% and 4.07% vs 16.83% vs 32%, and 4.3% vs 16.75% vs 31.3% and 4.07% vs 15.18% vs 29.9% in control, low dose, and hight dose groups, respectively (P<0.001). M30 antigen levels (U/L) measured in culture media of HeLa and OVCAR-3 cells treated with paclitaxel, cisplatin, and camptothecin were 53.03 vs 101.53 vs 355.59 and 86 vs 114.41 vs 412.04, 53.03 vs 79.84 vs 327.64 and 86 vs 125.44 vs 385.09, and 53.03 vs 88.41 vs 295.005 and 86 vs 108.42 vs 263.1 in control, low dose, and hight dose groups, respectively (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our results obtained in this preclinical study suggests that measurement of the levels of M30 antigen may help to predict the clinical responses and to select the effective anti-cancer agents in clinical settings, rapidly and quantitatively.
