1.Clinical Analysis of Meniscus Injuries in Korean Soldiers: 108 Cases
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1971;6(4):313-316
Clinical analysis is done on 108 meniscus injuries operated on at Kwangju Armed Forces General Hospital from 1961 to 1971, with the following results. l. All cases included in this report were military personnels aged from 19 to 35 years old 2. The lateral meniscus was more frequently injured than the medial with a ratio of 79 to 29 (8:3) and the right side knee than the left with a ratio of 60 to 48(6:5). 3. The posterior horn tears were the most common type of injuries involved in 40 cases (41%) 4. There could be found no history of definitive trauma in l7 cases.

Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 1998;25(8):1416-1425
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death attributable to cancer in women. In view of the limitations of conventional predictable factors of the breast cancer, additional second-generation parameters would be valuable in selecting the patients who would be most likely to be beneficial from adjuvant therapy and breast reconstruction. The author investigated the HER2/neu gene amplification and the number of chromosome 17 in 39 cases of paraffin embedded breast cancer tissues, 20 cases without lymph node metastasis and 19 cases with lymph node metastasis, using fluorescent in situ hybridization(FISH) and compared the results with HER2/neu and p 53 protein expression detected by immunohistochemical method. Eleven cases fibroadenoma were used as benign tumor control. Numerical aberrations of chromosome 17 were found in 17 out 39 breast cancer cases (44%)(monosomy in 10 cases, 26%; trisomy in 3 cases, 8%; tetrasomy in 3 cases, 8%; polysomy in 1 case ,3%), and the frequency of each type aberration was not significantly different between the negative and positive groups in lymph node metastasis. Monosomy of chromosome 17 was found in 2 out of 11(12%) fibroadenoma cases. HER2/neu gene amplification was found in 8 out of 39 cases (19%) and other 2 cases revealed HER2/neu gene amplification in lymph node metastatic tumor only, not in original tumor. Fourteen out of 19 cases of breast cancer with lymph metastasis showed HER2/neu protein expression both in original and metastatic tumors. All of the six cases showing HER2/neu gene amplification in original and/or metastatic tumor revealed HER2/neu protein expression. The frequency of HER2/neu gene amplification in the 39 breast cancer cases was not different between metastatic and non-metastatic groups(p= 0.284). However, HER2/neu protein expression was increased significantly in the metastatic group(p=0.028). None of the 11 fibroadenoma cases revealed HER2/neu gene amplification or HER2/ neu protein expression. Nine out of 19 cases of breast cancer with lymph node metastasis showed p 53 protein accumulation in original tumor(47%), but 3 of them revealed p 53 protein accumulation only in original tumor. The frequency of p 53 protein accumulation was not significantly different between metastatic and non-metastatic groups. None of the 11 fibroadenoma cases revealed p 53 protein accumulation. In conclusion, there are no differences between the lymph node metastatic group and non-metastatic groups in numerical aberrations of the chromosome 17 , amplification of the HER2/neu gene expression and accumulation of the p 53 protein in breast cancer. However, the HER2/neu protein expression was increased significantly in lymph node metastatic group, so it could be one of the predictors of the metastasis in breast cancer.

A one step reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) combined nested PCR was set up to increase efficiency in the diagnosis of canine distemper virus (CDV) infection after developement of nested PCR. Two PCR primer sets were designed based on the sequence of nucleocapsid gene of CDV Onderstepoort strain. One-step RT-PCR with the outer primer pair was revealed to detect 10(2) PFU/ml. The sensitivity was increased hundredfold using the one-step RT-PCR combined with the nested PCR. Specificity of the PCR was also confirmed using other related canine virus and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and body secretes of healthy dogs. Of the 51 blood samples from dogs clinically suspected of CD, 45 samples were revealed as positive by one-step RT-PCR combined with nested PCR. However, only 15 samples were identified as positive with a single one step RT-PCR. Therefore approximately 60% increase in the efficiency of the diagnosis was observed by the combined method. These results suggested that one step RT-PCR combined with nested PCR could be a sensitive, specific, and practical method for diagnosis of CDV infection.

Korean Circulation Journal 1986;16(1):79-94
During the period of 4 years from May, 1981 to April, 1985, 71 cases of obstructing subinfundibular muscular bundles of the right ventricle in congential cardiovascular anomalies were diagnosed by cariac catheterization and angiography at Hanyang University. The finding of right ventricular angiogram and degree of the right ventricular outflow obstruction, clinical data, electrocardiographic data and hemodynamic data were correlated irrespectively. The summary of this article is as follows. 1) The age of patients was ranged from 1 to 22 years old with a mean age of 8 years old. There were 39 males and 32 females with M:F ratio of 1.2:1. The incidence of obstructing subinfundibular muscular bundles of the right ventricle in congenital cardiovascular anomalies was higher with increasing age. 2) The associated cardic anomalies were as follows: 40 cases (56%) of isolated ventricular septal defect(VSD), 13(18%) of tetralogy of Fallot physiology, 7(10%) of patent ductus arteriosus(PDA), 3(4%) of pulmonary stenosis, 1 aortic stenosis, 1 double outlet of right ventricle(DORV), 1 trilogy, 1 ostium secundum defect, etc. The incidence of VSD with or without other associated cardiovascular anomalies was 56 cases(79%) out of 71 cases. 3) Maximum systolic pressure gradient between proximal and distal chamber of the right ventricle were under 25 mmHg in 32 cases, between 25 and 50 mmHg in 13 and above 50 mmHg in 26. Pressure gradients of all 7 cases with PDA were under 25 mmHg. 4) Correlative assesment of angiographic manifestation(2 indicies:Diameter of right ventricular outflow tract(systolic phase)/diameter of tricuspid valvular annulus(diastolic phase)=OT/TV, Diameter of right ventricular outflow tract(systolic phase)/Length of right ventricular diaphragmatic surface(systolic phase)=OT/RV) according to pressure gradient, OT/Tv and OT/RV values were lower the increasing pressure gradient, between proximal and distal chamber of the right ventricle. These were reverse correlations but coefficients of correlation(r) were-0.49and -0.48. Therefore, the degree of right ventricular outflow obstruction could be predicted, using 2 indices of right ventricular angiogram in individual cases, but could not be calculated accurately. 5) This indicated that pressuer gradient was also affected by technical errors, variable cardic anomalies, development of sinusoid, age and the other factors. 6) We assumed that non-invasive Doppler echocardiography could be useful in making the diagnosis and follow up of the patient with obstructing subinfundibular muscle bundles in right ventricle.

Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 1999;26(6):1131-1137
The extensive knowledge of accurate anatomical morphology and acceptable proportion of the eyelid and orbit should be needed for plastic surgeons. The normal morphological and functional values of eyelids and orbits are variable according to races, sex and ages, and there are a few articles concerning them in Korea yet. The author measured eigt items of morphological and functional values of eyelids in Koreans and statistically analyzed them in 498 individuals including 234 males and 264 females. We divided them into nine age-related groups and measured the values. Especially, we subdivided 10 to 19 year-old group into three subgroup concretely because most of the values in the 10 to 19 year-old group reach the peak level of growth. The mean values in adults were recorded as follows: The horizontal dimension of the palpebral fissure was 27.0 +/- 1.8 mm in males and 26.8 +/- 1,7 mm in females and the vertical dimension of the palpebral fissure was 8.0 +/- 1.0 mm in female. The slant of the palpebral fissure was 7.9 +/- 2.4 degrees in males and 8.8 +/- 2.3 degrees in females and the height of the opened upper eyelid was 12.4 +/- 2.4 mm in males and 12.0 +/- 1.9 mm in females. The height of double fold in closed eye was 6.6 mm in males and 6.5 mm in femals and the intercanthal distance was 38.4 +/- 3.0 mm in males and 38.2 +/- 2.8 mm in females. The interpupillary distance was 64.6 +/- 2.9 mm in males and 63.6 +/- 2.9 mm in females. A double fold was seen in 36.1% of Korean. The average height of the double fold in closed eye was about 6.5 mm. The epicanthus present in 58.6% of Korean eyes and the most commom type was epicantus tarsalis. The growth of eyelids reached the peak level at teenager in a great portion. After the peak level, the changing pattern of eyelids could be divided into 3 groups; the first one was increasing more, the second was stationary, and the third was decreasing gradually. The peak levle of growth reached at 10 to 13-year-old in the vertical dimension of the palpebral fissure, at 14 to 16-year-old in the intercanthal distance, at 17 to 19-year-old in the horizontal dimension of the palpebral fissure.
