2.Acute Phase Retinal Phototoxicity Induced by Blue Fluorescent Light.

Even though phototherapy is an effective means of treating hyperbilirubinemia, adequate binocular shields are essential to prevent light hazard of retina during phototherapy. The phototherapy to young albino rabbits was performed under various conditions; exposured for 12, 24, and 48 hours, continuity or intermittence of irradiation, and use of shields. Although there was no definite pathologic change in indirect ophthalmoscopic examination, severe damage was seen at electron microscopic level. In all experimental groups, swelling and edema of photoreceptor were seen. at right after phototherapy. Futhermore, more severe damage was seen in case of intermittent irradiated group and prolong exposed group. In mydriatic eyes, severity of damage was similiar to non mydi iatic eyes, but area of retinal damage was more extensive than non-mydriatic eves.. In control group which was protected by binocular shields during phototherapy, no significant abnormality was found.

3.Two Cases of Metastatic Carcinoma of Breast.

We report two cases of rare, and clinically atypical metastatic breast carcinoma; zosterifo pattern, and cicatrirical pattern. A 51-year-old female had zosteriform eruption in the right chest and arm, which was diagnosed as an inflammatory, and telangiectatic type breast carcinoma I. skin biopsy. Another patient, a 71-year-old female,. had a retraction of nipple and breast, al erythematous nodular plaques like a surgical scar with distant metastasis to the counterlateral inguinal lymph node. A skin biopsy disclosed nodular type lymphatic dissemination of brea.,: carcinoma. In both patients, cutaneous lesions were the first signs of breast cancer with a gra-r prognosis.

4.Ultrasonography in salivary gland disease

Recently, CT scan, CT sialogram, radionuclide imaging and ultasonogram are widely applicated in conjuctionwith conventional studies such as plain film, sialogram and arteriogram for the diagnosis of salivary glanddisease. Among them, ultrasonogram porvides safe, noninvasive, and reliable way to diagnose salivary glanddisease. Authors evaluated ultrasonographic and sialographic findings of patients with suspected salivary glanddisease in 16 cases at Korea University Hosital for 8 months. (from Dec. 1983 to Aug. 1984). The following resultsare observed. 1. Final diagnosis of 16 cases were 2 cases of stone, 1 case of pleomorphic adenoma, 2 cases ofneurilemmoma, 3 cases of chronic sialademitis, 1 case of abscess, 2 cases of Retention cyst, 1 case of psendocyst,1 case of tuberculous lymphadenopathy, and 3 cases of normal finding. 2. Diagnostic ultrasonogram providesaccurate information for the size, location and character of the lesion, and differentiates intragladular lesionsfrom extraglandular ones. 3. Ultrasonogram is one of convenient, reliable and initial modality for the diagnosisof salivary gland disease.

5.Age - Related Changes of Glycosaminoglycan in Senescence - Accelerated Mouse ( SAM ) Skin.

BACKGROUND: The various manifestations of intrinsic cutaneous aging may reflect the age-related changes of dermal ground aubstances, the important components of the dermis. OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to observe whether there is any age-relsted change, quantitatively and qualitatively, in dermal glycosaminoglycan(GAG) METHODS: The Senescence-A.ccelerated-Mice(SAM) strain "Prone" to develop senescence(P/8), aged 4 days(P-Y a group, n=5) and 4 months old (P-0 group, n=5) were used, with SAM strain Resistance to senescence (R/1), aged 4 montha old (R-0 group, n=5). The whole skin of SAM was incubated in 0.1 sodium phosphate buffer(NaPB), 2M guanidine-HC1, and 4M guanidine-HCl, sequencially, for the extractiop of GAG. The amount of GAG was measured by using alcian blue and by methylene blue metachrometic assay. Uronic acid(UA) was estimate l employing carbazole reaction. Extracted skin protein profiles were analyed by SDS-PAGE. RESULTS: 1. The total contents of GAG per wet weight of skin, as measured uairq, alcian blue, was highter in R-0 group than R-Y and P-Y group, which is statistically significant. 2. The methylene blue metaehromatic assay yielded highter absorbance values in 2M guanidine-HCl extract than NaPB ext:racts. 3. The total contents of UA decreased with aging in R strains, buttriking increase was noted in the P strain. 4. On SDS-PAGE, the protein profiles of NaPB extracts showed similarity to serum protein. 125 kDa protein band was noted only in guanidine-HCl extracts. 37.40kDa protein bands were appeared in 2M, 4M guanicline-HCl extract of R-0 group. But. there was no significant difference in both strains. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that macromolecules, such as GAG, is one of the target molecules of the cutaneous eging process, and these change muy be related to the age-related changes of dermal water content.

7.Diagnostic significance of computed tomography in gastric cancer

Gastric cancer is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy in Korea. Identification and evaluation ofgastric mass lesions and regional-distant metastases by abdominal CT scan are important for the treatment planningand prognostic implications of gastric cancer patients. Author reviewed CT scan are important for the treatemntplaning and prognostic implications of gastric cancer patients. Author reviewed CT scan of 61 cases of pathologyproven gastric cancer, retrospectively, for recent 20 months from July 1983 to Feb. 1985 at department ofradiology, Korea University, Hae Wha Hospital. The results were as follows: 1. There were 50 cases of advanced adenocarcinoma, 8 cases of early gastric cancer, 2 cases of leiomyosarcoma, and 1 case of lymphoma in total 61cases. 2. The sex ratio of male to female was 2:1. Age distribution was from 24 to 75 year old and peak incidencewas in 6th decade. 3. The most frequent site of involvement with gastric cancer was gastric antrum in 51%. 4. 48of the 50 patients with advanced gastric adenocarcinoma(96%) had a wall thickness greater than 1 cm, and all of 8cases of early gastric cancer had a wall thickness less than 1 cm. Regional lymph node tumor infiltration wasfound in 100% of gastric wall thickness greater than 2.0cm, in 64% of cases of 1.5 to 2.0cm, in 50% of cases of1.9 to 1.5cm, and 12.5% of cases of less than 1.0cm. 5. In a comparison of enlargement of reginal lymph node by CTscan to tumor infiltration of regional lymph node by histology, senitivity was 52%, specificity was 87%, and reliability was 66%. 6. The structures involved by distant metastases of these cases were the retroperitoneallymph node in 15, liver in 8, and pancrease in 3. 7. The diagnostic accuracy of CT staging was considered about68% by correlation of the surgical and histological findings. 8. The CT scan is one of the accurate and simpletool for evaluation of size, shape, extent, as well as distant metastases in the cases of gastric malignancies.

9.Immunohistochemical Study on the Distribution of Estrogen Receptor-alpha in the Hippocampus of the Normal Aged Rat.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, estrogen has also been shown to modulate the development and function of the brain, bur not exclusively in areas involved with sexual behavior. Among the most novel and fascinating effects of estrogen are those on cognitive function and memory process and their alterations during aging and neurodegenarative disease like Alzheimer. Estrogen receptors distributed not only in the hypothalamus but many different areas, like cerebral cortex, hippocampus, basal forebrain, midbrain, spinal cord, and the diverse action of estrogen is supported by this fact. Numerous studies suggest thai estrogen may be beneficial in preserving cognitive function, but it is not clear yet. PURPOSE: In this study, we perform the immunohistochemical staining in the hippocampus of normal aged rat, and show the distribution of estrogen receptor compared with the neonatal rat. METHODS: we have used antibodies against a estrogen receptor(ER)-alpha to determine their distribution in neonatal and aged SD rat hippocampus. RESULTS: In neonatal rat hippocampus, ER-alpha immunoreactivity was observed in the nucleus of Purkinje cells, whereas in aged rat hippocampus, ER-a immunoreactivity was found mainly in the cytoplasm of Purkinje cells. CONCLUSION: We showed the age related intracellular differential distribution of ER-alpha immunoreactivity in the rat hippocampus. But, further investigations are required to establish whether functional relations like cognitive ability exist with this different intracellular expression of ER-alpha immunoreactivity.

10.Dynamic MR Imaging of Hepatic Hemangioma and Hepatocellular: Findings and Differential Diagnosis.

PURPOSE: We performed dynamic MR imaging using GdDTPA to find characteristic enhancement pattern of hepatic hemangioma distinguishing from hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS: 28 hepatic hemangiomas and 10 hepatocellular carcinomas were evaluated. Serial dynamic scans after Gd-DTPA(0.1mmol/kg) intravenous injection were obtained by using 0.5T machine and analyzed contrast-to-noise ratio(CNR) of the lesion and enhancement pattern on each scan. RESULTS: Hepatic hemangiomas had positive CNR from 1-2 minute images, and revealed typical "fill-in phenomenon" on early phase with prolonged enhancement in 26 cases(92.8%), and early homogeneous enhancement with isointensity on delayed phase in 2 cases(7.2%) of small hemangiome~ Hepatocellular carcinomas revealed inhomogeneous enhancement with hypointensity on delayed phase in 10 cases(100%) and 3 cases (30%) of capsular enhancement. CONCLUSION: Hepatic hemangioma can be easily distinguished from hepatocellular carcinoma by using Gd DTPA enhanced dynamic MR imaging according to its typical enhancement pattern of "fill-in phenomenon" and prolonged enhancement.
