1.The Comparison of Aphakic Refraction Before and After Cataract Surgery.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1991;32(9):732-737
We reviewed the records of 101 eyes who underwent extracapsular cataract extraction without intraocular lens implantation at Kosin Medical Center from Feb. 1987 to Mar. 1990. Of these, 47 eyes that showed postoperative corrected visual acuity of 0.5 more and more than 2 months' follow-up periods, were recruited for this study. To detect the changes of preoperative predicted aphakic refractions and postoperative observed aphakic refractions. we studied the changes of pre- and postoperative axial lengths, keratometric measurements, and observed aphakic refractions at postoperative 2 months were compared with predicted aphakic refractions, using linear regression formula. The results were as follows: 1. Distribution of age were in the range of 24 to 79 years(mean, 59.4 years), and seventh decade(31.8%) was most common. 2. Postoperative keratometric measurements was decreased in power of mean +/- SD; 0.04 +/- 0.14 diopters(p>0.05). 3. Postoperative axial length was increased by 0.20 +/- 0.09mm(p<0.05). 4. The difference between pre- and postoperative refractive power was mean +/- SD; 0.58 +/- 0.16 diopters(p<0.05).
2.Subcutaneous Dermoid Cysts in a Family ( Mother and Daughter ).
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1988;26(5):764-767
Dermoid cyst is rare developmental anomaly with sequestration of embryonic closure line, but there is no suggestian that such an anomaly is inherited. The patients were 41 year old mother and 10 year old daugliter whose skin lesions have been noticed since puberta.lstae in the mother and since birth in the daugther It was interesting for those lesions to be appeared typically on the superior orbital area.

3.Hybrid Total Hip Replacement Arthroplasty: Minimum 3 Year Follow - Up Result.
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1998;33(2):246-253
Fifty-eight primary total hip arthroplasties with hyhrid cemented femoral component using contemporary cementing technique and cementless acctahular cup were followed for a minimum 3 year(ranged, 36 to 67 months, mean 4.1 years). Thc average age of the patients at the time of the operation was 54 years(ranged, 22 to 73 years). The preoperative common diagnosis were avascular necrosis of femoral head in 38 hips and miscellaneou. in 20 hips. The mean Harris hip score was 61 in preoperative and 91 in postoperative at last Follow-up. 5-1 hips(92%) were rated excellent and good clinically. One hip was revised for aseptic loosening of the femoral stem at 52 months follow-up. Radiographically no acetahular component was loose. Three femoral stems were definitely loose, one stem was classfied as prohahle loosenine and another one was ratde as possible loosening. There was no progressive radiolucent dermaation ol' cement-hone interf'ace in stable fermoral steni. Non progressive cement-bone radiolucency was lound seven hips in zone 1, two hips in zone 6, one hip in zone 2 and one hip in zone 7 at last follow-up. There were two postoperalive dislocations. Other complications included superficial infection(two hips) and sciatic nervc palsy(one hip). Our experience showed that the hyhrid hip replaccment with improved cementing technique provided satisfactory results at minimum 3 year follow-up study and emphasized the importantance of careful cementing techniques in survival ot cemented I'cmoral stem.

Mesenchymal Chondrcsarcoma is a rare malignant tumor originally described by Lichtenstein and Bernstein in 1959. Since the original description, several other reports of this tumor have been published, bringing the total numbers of cases in the literature to about Sixty-five. We report a case of Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma in an 11-year-old boy who complained of a palpable mass in the region of the left iliac crest.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1980;18(5):447-453
We present two cases of lymphangioma circumscriptum according to the clinical pattern and histopathological findings, one with lesions on the tongue and the other with lesions of the oral mucous membrane. The first case was a 5 year-old boy with a plaque of grouped transluscent vesicles resembling frog's spawn on ventral surface of the tongue of three years duration. The second case, also a 5 year-old boy, had a lymphangioma circumscriptum lesion in the right buccal mucous membrane which developed several months after birth and eventually produeed swelling of the right cheek. The histopathological findings of both cases showed variable-sized dilated lymphatic channels lined by one layer of normal endothelial cells, extending to the deep dermis, subcutaneous tissue and muscle layer and resembling the spongy type variant of classical lymphangoima circumscriptum using the classification of lymphangioma of Peacheyet al.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1987;25(2):187-192
Skin floras were taken from forehead, sternal area, lower margin of axillae, and interscapular space of 50 healthy Koreans(M 30, F 20) between 18 year and 40 years old using Williamson and Kligman's method and modified Pilsburg and .Nichols method. After incubating these floras for 3-5 days aerobically and anaerobically, we identified them using various stains and biochemical tests. The most common flora was Corynebucterium acne(84%), followed by aerobic diphtheroids(14%), coagulase negative staphylococcus, Micrococcus in orders. Although transient floras including Staphylococcus aareas, Pseudomonas, Listeria monocytogenes, and other Gram negative bacilli were isolated, they were rare and did mainly from axilla. The most common resident site of Corynebacteirium acne was forehead (l. 67 x 10/cm), but in aerobic diphtheroids and Micrococcaceae was the lower margin of axilla(2.70x16/cm, 2.34x10/cm), in which aerobic floras were more than anaerobics. The incidence rate of lipophilic diphtheroid was 27%, however it was 35% in axilla. The aerobic diphtheroid capable of nitrate reduction was 26%, which was very common in forehead. Among Propionibacterium species, Propionibacterim(P) acne was isolated 100% from all sites, but P. grandulosum was only in 2-7% and P. avidum was not.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1989;27(2):164-170
There are several ELISA(enzyme linked immunosobent assay) kits to be highly sensitive and specific in the screening test for antibodies to HIV. However, these have several problems such as high false-positive rate, low reproducibility and complex test procedures. A new serological test, the gelatin particle agglutination test(PAT), was developed and reported as good test having the same sensitivity with ELISA, and simple and easy procedure. The purpose of this study is com parison of two screening tests, ELISA and PAT, for detection of antibodies to HIV In one hundred two prostitutes, who used to contact with foreigners such as U.S. army personels, 10 syphilitic patients in Chonnam University hospital and 3 HIV infected patients, the serological results were equal in both tests, so there. was 100% concordance rate of seroreactivity between ELISA and PAT. Among 13 serum samples with false positive in ELISA test, only one sample revealed also reactive in PAT, which suggest indirectly us for PAT to be more specific than ELISA. The quantitative test with PAT of 4 consecutive serums during 4 months in the AIDS patient with Kaposi's sarcoma. However, in overall serum titer, the AIDS patient was higher than asymptomatic infected person. Thus the PAT test should be also useful for the mass screcning and quantitative test of anti-HIV antibody, and is highly recommedable for detection of HIV infection because the test can be performed with simple procedure and techique in addition ecoomically low cost and shortened time for the test.

Johng Bong KAHNG ; Young Ho WON ; Young Pio KIM
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1981;19(2):153-159
The present clinical study was attempted to estimate the frequency of tuberous sclerosis using a paradigm. similar to the one employed by Crowe et al and to determine the genetic charaeteristics of the people of Chonnam Pravince regarding said disease. In addition other clinical manifestations were observed. Twenty-five subjects had visited the Department of Dermatology of Chonnam Medical University Hospital between 1970 and l980. Relatives of the subjects were examined whenever possible. The results of this study show that the incidence of this syndrome m Chonnam Province is probably in the region of l/80, 000~90,000. The sex ratio was nearly equal,12 males to 13 females. The mean age at first visit was about fifteen. OnIy 20 per cent of the cases have a familial history of the disease but the correct, incidence is probably higher since some patients provided incomplete family histories This clinical study suggests that tuberous sclerosis is an autosomal dominant inheritance disease with variable expressivity evidenced by the fact that although five of eleven of the groups offspring developed tuberosus sclerosis There were differences in the clinical features between the parent and the chiid.

Young Ho WON ; Inn Ki CHUN ; Young Pio KIM
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1982;20(2):335-339
Weber-Christian diaease is characterized by recurrent crops of subcutaneous nodules or plaques which occur during febrile periods and usually has spontaneous regression. Since the earlier case reports there have been instances of nodular panniculitis affecting visceral fat as well as the subcutaneous tissue. Death may rarely occur follow ing visceral involvement. We experienced a fatal case of Weber-Christian disease in a 32 year old female, who had prominent hepatomegaly and leukopenia accompanied by various general symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and cough. This case also had unusually large erythematous swelling of the face and aMomen in addition to multiple subcutaneous nodules in the extremities and trunk.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1989;27(5):512-520
The extracellular cytolysin produced by V. ulnificus has gained great attention as a causative factor for the pathogenesis of V. vulnificus-infected disease. In this study, an attempt was made to elucidated the mechanism for the toxity of cytolysin. 1. Cytolysin given to mouse showed lethal activity with LD of 3.7 HU and produced hemoconcentration, suggesting that its lethal activitis attributable to the increased vascular permeability. 2. The lethal activity of cytolysin for mouse was prevented by intraperitoneal administration of clemastin or verapamil one hour before intravenous injection of cytolysin. 3. Treatment of peritoneal mast cells from rats with cytolysin stimulated histamine relesse irrespective of the prescence of extracellular Ca and the stimulatory effect of cytolysin was not affected by the pretreatment of mast cells with per tussis toxin. 4. The hemolytic activity and stimulatory effect of cytolysin on histamine release from mast cell were inhibited by cholesterol. The results suggest that the lethal activity of cytolysin is attributable to the increased vascular permeability which is resulted from the stimulation of histsmine release from mast cells and/or basophils by cytolysin.
