BACKGROUND: Suicide is a self-destructive behavior that can occur throughout life. Recently the suicide rate has gradually increased in Korea. Suicide is the third most common cause of death in adolescents. The most important factOrs closely related to suicide were depression and hopelessness. This study aimed to analyze first, relationships between suicidal ideation, depression, hopelessness, social support and self-esteem, second, the differences between the demographic factors and suicidal ideation, depression, hopelessness, social support and self-esteem. METHODS: This study was surveyed with a questionaire to 220 students of colleges located in Pusan. The instruments were used in this study were Harters(1988) Self-Perception Profile for College Students, Harter and Robinsons(1988) Approval Support Scale for Adolescents, Becks(1961) Beck Depression Inventory, Becks(1974) Beck Hopelessness Scale and Reynolds(1987) Suicidal ideation Questionaire. RESULTS: Self-esteem had a relatively strong positive correlation with social support. Suicidal ideation had a strong positive correlation with depression. Depression had a negative correlation with self-esteem and social support. Suicidal ideation had a negative correlation with self-esteem and social support. CONCLUSIONS: According to this study, the major factors related to suicidal tendency of adolescents were depression, low self-esteem, and low social support. Then the strategy to improve self-esteem and to encourage social support should be implemented for adolescents to prevent suicide.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1983;19(2):414-425
With the improvements, during recent years, in the control of the infections and nutritional diseases thesubject of congenital malformation becomes of increasing importance. The radiologic signs are crucial for promptdiagnosis of anomalies of alimentary tract and with early identification of resulting complication, surgicaltherapy is usually life-saving. 30 cases of congenital anomalies of alimentary tract in infants were reviewed inrespect of age, sex, incidence and radiological findings. 1. The most common lesion was hypertrophic pyloricstenosis, followed by congenital megacolon and anorectal anomaly, tracheoesophageal fistula, intestinal atresia.2. Male outnumbered female in most congenital anomalies of alimentary tract. 25 cases were under the age of 1month. 3. Common symptoms of upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction are vomiting and abdominal distention. Inthe obstruction of lower gastrointestinal tract, abdominal distention and failure of meconium passage were noted.4. Roentgenologic finding were as follows, a. Chest A-P and lateral view; In tracheoesophageal fistula, sacculardilatation of upper esphagus and displacement of trachea anterolaterally were the most common finding. b. Simpleabdomen: Obstructive pattern of proximal portion of duodenum shows in 11 cases, of distal bowel shows in 16 cases.Duodenal atresia showed “double bubble” sing, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis showed marked gastric distention, paucity of air in small bowel and increased gastric peristalsis were the most common finding. Hirschsprung'sdisease showed absence of rectal gas almostly. The variable length between blind hindgut to anus was seen inanorectal anomalies. c. Esophagogram: Blind sac of upper esophagus was seen at the 4th thoracic spinal level anddisplacement of trachea anteriolaterally. 1 case of tracheoesophageal fistula had an intact esophageal lumen. d.Upper G-I series; In hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, delayed gastric emptying, string or double tract sign were themost common finding and catapiller sign, tit sign, shoulder sing or open umbrella sign were noted. e. Bariumenema; In congenital megacolon, transitional zone and irregular bizzar contraction, “choppywave” were noted.Radiograph made 24 hours after barium enema showed retained barium in the colon. f. Selective retrogradefistulogram, distal loopgram & voiding cystogram: In anorectal anomalies, 3 cases showed rectourethral fistula and2 cases showed rectovaginal fistula and 1 case showed rectovesical fistula. And membranous imperforate anus is in1 case.

Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 1994;37(4):565-572
Prader-Willi syndrome is characterized by infantile hypotonia, mental retardation, hyperhagia, hypogonadism and obesity. Approximately 60% of all PLW syndrome show an interstitial deletion of chromosome 15, 37% have apparently normal chromosome, and 3.6% have a variety of other abnormalities involving chromosome 15. Diabetes mellitus has been considered a component of PLW syndrome and the incidence is about 7%. We experienced a 17-year-old female who revealed mental retardation, hypogonadism, obesity, and non-insulin dependent type DM, compatible with Prader-Willi syndrome.

6.Care Burden for Mental Illness Patients, Attitude toward Mental Illness and Psychiatric Nursing Competency in Non-psychiatric Nurses.
Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing 2017;26(1):55-66
PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to identify the level of care burden for patients with mental illness, attitudes toward mental illness and psychiatric nursing competency in non-psychiatric nurses and to identify correlations among these variables. METHODS: Data were collected from 153 non-psychiatric nurses who worked at a hospital located in Seoul, Korea. Care burden for mental illness patients, attitudes toward mental illness, and psychiatric nursing competency were measured using structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test and Pearson's correlation coefficients with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. RESULTS: Non-psychiatric nurses' care burden for mental illness patients showed negative correlations with attitude toward mental illness (r=-.50, p<.001) and intervention competency (r=-.31, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that effective nursing care for patients with mental illness in non-psychiatric departments requires enhancing nurses' competency in psychiatric nursing and developing positive attitudes toward mental illness.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration 2017;23(4):450-459
PURPOSE: There have been global initiatives and efforts over the last decade to manage patient safety. Thus aims of this study were to examine university hospital nurses' perceptions of patient safety culture and levels of safety control, and to identify factors that affect patient safety management activities. METHODS: Participants were 222 nurses who had worked as nurses for more than one year and who conducted patient safety management activities at a university hospital. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 20.0 computer program. RESULTS: General factors which positively impacted nurses' patient safety management were total length of work in nursing, total length of work in present hospital, and experience of a patient safety accident along with safety factors of perception of communication about accident related events and frequency of reporting accident events. These variables explained 45% of the variance in patient safety management activities. CONCLUSION: The findings from this study suggest solutions to promote patient safety management activities in hospitals and provide basic background for nursing education intervention strategies to promote safety control and patient safety management activities intended for nurses.

Seung Hee LEE ; Hyung Suk JANG ; Young Hee YANG
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2016;46(5):744-752
PURPOSE: This study was done to investigate factors influencing successful aging in middle-aged women. METHODS: A convenience sample of 103 middle-aged women was selected from the community. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, two-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis test, Pearson correlations, Spearman correlations and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. RESULTS: Results of regression analysis showed that significant factors influencing successful aging were post-traumatic growth and social support. This regression model explained 48% of the variance in successful aging. CONCLUSION: Findings show that the concept 'post-traumatic growth' is an important factor influencing successful aging in middle-aged women. In addition, social support from friends/co-workers had greater influence on successful aging than social support from family. Thus, we need to consider the positive impact of post-traumatic growth and increase the chances of social participation in a successful aging program for middle-aged women.

9.A Correlational Study on Professional Autonomy and Self-Concept of Clinical Nurses.
Hee Jung JANG ; Myung Sook SUNG ; Young Hee JOO
Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 1998;5(2):324-340
Nurses experience role conflict between nursing theory that they learned in school and clinical nursing practice. This conflict lead to lower self-image, self-esteem, job dissatisfaction. Also, the professionalism of nurses is estimatable by the grade of autonomy. The professional autonomy requires individual and professional obligation about her decision and performance. A lack of professional autonomy results in the job dissatisfaction. Job dissatisfaction leads to absenteeism, increased proneness to mental and physical illness and higher turnover rates. The purpose of this study was o investigate professional autonomy and self-concept of clinical nurses. Data were collected from 262 clinical nurses in P city from June 1 to June 30, 1996. The instruments used for this study were made by Arthur(1990) and Schutzenhofer(1983). The data were analyzed for frequency and percentage, mean, SD, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression, using SAS PC+ Program. The findings were as it follows : 1. The mean of professional autonomy and self-concept were 152+/-18.48, 70.65+/-8.20(2.62), respectively. These showed mid level of professional autonomy and self-concept. 2. Professional autonomy of clinical nurses was found to vary significantly according to total years of clinical experience(F=4.49, p<0.01), position(F=3.49, p<0.05), and state under study for the degree(F=3.83, p<0.05). Professional self-concept was found to vary significantly according to age(F=3.52, p<0.05), marital status(F=7.39, p<0.001), total years of clinical experience(F=3.59, p<0.05), position(F=5.22, p<0.01), the expectant period being on the duty as clinical nurse(F=8.34, p<0.001), and motivation of choosing nursing(F=5.17, p<0.001). 3. The statistical relationship between clinical nurses' profession autonomy and self-concept was found as positive correlation9r=0.42246, p<0.001). 4. Professional autonomy was the highest factor predicting professional self-concept(17.85%). Professional autonomy and marital status accounted for 20.60% in professional self-concept of clinical nurses. In conclusion, Professional autonomy and self-concept of clinical nurses showed significantly positive relationship. Therefore, nursing education needs to develop programs and policies to increase professional autonomy and self-concept of clinical nurses.
