PURPOSE: To verify the expression of mouse homologue of glucosamine-6-phosphate deaminase (GNPDA) in mouse epididymis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GNPDA expression was examined in mouse epididymis using the polyclonal antibody raised against a synthetic oligopeptide of N-terminus of mouse homologue of GNPDA. RESULTS: In Western blot, immunoreactive band of Mr. 33 kDa was detected in the cauda epididymal extracts. In immunostaining, positive signal was found in the cytoplasm and stereocillia of epithelial cells of cauda epididymal tubule, and interstitial cells of adult epididymis. CONCLUSION: Expression of GNPDA in epididymis suggests that it possibly involved in absorption and intracellular digestion of luminal contents, and the remodeling of epithelia in mouse epididymis.

PURPOSE: The objectives for this study were to identify the factors that correlate with appraisal of illness and to explore what variables are predictive of cancer patients primary caregivers' cognitive appraisal for stress. METHOD: The subjects were selected by convenient sampling and 130 caregivers who completed a questionnaire. Measures used in this study included the Family Inventory of Resources for Management, Social Support Index, Family Crisis Oriented Personal Evaluation Scales and Family Coping Coherence Index. Pearson correlation was used to identify the relationship among factors and multiple regression was used to determine the individual and cumulative effect of potential predictors on the caregivers' appraisal. RESULTS: Patient's level of activity, severity of the disease, quality of relation between patient and caregiver, caregiver's subjective health status, economic status, family resources and coping were significantly correlated. Among the variables, coping, family resources, economic status and quality of relation between caregiver and patient predicted 49.2 percent of the variance in appraisal of caregivers' stress condition. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that coping mechanisms and family resources are important for positive appraisal. Nurses should provide adequate nursing care for the primary caregiver about professional care information and supportive counseling.

PURPOSE:Autonomic neuropathy in adult diabetics is known to be common and poor in prognosis. Cardiac autonomic neuropathy increases sudden cardiac death and is present before apparant cardiac symptoms. Subclinical diabetic peripheral neuropathy is common with type 1 diabetes. In children, few studies for subclinical peripheral neuropathy and cardiac autonomic neuropathy were reported but the results were inconsistent. The authors investigated subclinical cardiac and peripheral neuropaties and evaluated correlation between nerve conduction velocity(NCV) and cardiac autonomic function(CAF) test in type 1 diabetic children and adolescents METHODS:Over 5 years from 1997 to 2002, 27 IDDM without clinical neuropathy were registered. Total 57 CAF and NCV were tested every 2 or 3 years. Duration of diabetes, average HbA1c during 1 year prior to the test, and urinary microalbumin excretion for 24 hours were assessed. Diabetic autonomic nervous function was evaluated by cardiovascular reflex test:falling systolic blood pressure in response to standing, heart rate changes in response to standing, beat-to-beat rate variation during deep breathing, RR interval change during and after Valsalva maneuver. Subclinical peripheral neuropathy was evaluated by NCV in both upper and lower extremities. Correlation of parameters according to NCV abnormality and microalbuminuria were analyzed. RESULTS:The age, duration of diabetes and microalbuminuria were not statistically different between children with normal and abnormal NCV. The level of HbA1c was associated with NCV abnormality. In a multivariate logistic model for NCV abnormality, level of HbA1c showed statistical significance after controlling the effects of age, duration of diabetes, and urinary microalbumin level, and the odd ratio was 1.532. The degree of CAF abnormality was marginally significant in the logistic model. Children with microalbuminuria showed older age and longer duration of diabetes than those without microalbuminuria. However, mean HbA1c level was not significantly different between the two groups. Degree of CAF abnormality was not significantly associated with microalbuminuria, either. In a general linear model including urinary albumin level as the dependent variable, none of independent variables was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Therapy against neuropathy should be considered in patients with high HbA1c and abnormal CAF test even without clinically apparent neuropathy.

One hundred and fifty two open wounds of extremities including open fractures were treated at the Kyoungpook Nstional Univ. Hospital from March 1977 to August 1977. Of 152 open wounds there were 32 cases (21.5%) of wound infection even though the initial wound culture revealed bacterial growth in 44 cases(28.9%). However, there were only 10 cases of infection among the cases with positive bacterial growth in the original culture and the same organisms were found in the 6 cases between the initial wound culture and post infection culture. Sensitivity studies of the organisms, the Cephalosqorines appeared to be most effective as a prophylactic antibiotics. It was sensitive to all gram positive organisms and majority of gram negative organisms including Escherichia coli. In bacterial culture and sensitivity studies of the 82 open fracture wounds 18 of them showed gram positive and gramnegative bacteria. The prominant organism were Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus and Pseudomonas. The infection rate was lower in the cases whar the wound was managed within six hours from the time of injury than after six hours.

Gas producing infection accompanied by evidence of subcutaneous gas usually are diagnosed as clostridial gas gangrene. The occurrence of nonclostridial gas producing infection is thought to be relatively rare. Two cases of nonclostridial gas producing infection simulating clostridial gas gangrene in diabetes occurred. Gram stains of pus at the time of admission can isolate the E-coli and streptococcus, and can distinguish these two entities. Chief conplaints were swelling, pain and tenderness of right lower extremity by infection. Multiple incisions to free the tissues of gas and pus and the administration of antibiotics are the treatment of choice.

BACKGROUND: Monocytes/macrophages play a central role in determining the host response during Gram-negative infection through secretion of a variety of mediators after stimulation of LPS. Even though cytokine production has been shown to play an important role in host defense during sepsis cytokine release may also lead to tissue injury. Thus, regulation of macrophage response to LPS is critical for host survival during Gram-neg-alive sepsis. In animals exposed to nonlethal doses of endotoxin a characteristic hyporesponsiveness to subsequent administration of endotoxin has been observed. This phenomenon was knowm as 'LPS tolerance'. However, little information is availavble regarding the underlying mechanism of U)S tolerance. METHOD: Peripheral blood monocyte(PBMC) was isolated from peripheral blood of normal volunteers by adhesion purification method. To evaluate conditions to obtain LPS tolerance. preculture was carried out with LPS at 10ng/ml for 24 hours. For stimulation culture plates were washed two times and were stimulated with LPS at 1ng/ml for 4, 6 and 26 hours. To assess the underlying mechanisms of LPS tolerance, autologous serum, PMA, anti-CD14 Ab, Indomethacin or PGF2 were added to preculture solution respectively. Cytokine concentrations in culture supernatants were measured using ELISA for TNF-α and IL-8 and mRNA of TNF-α and IL-8 were determined by Northern blot analysis. RESULTS: The exposure of PBMC to low dose of LPS suppressed the cytokine production and mRNA expression of TNF-α, but not IL-8. Anti-CDl4 Ab partially recovered production of TNF-α which was suppressed by preculture with low dose LPS. The preculture with PMA induces US tolerance, as preculture with low dose LPS. CONCLUSION: LPS tolerance to TNF-α is regulated pretranslationally and is influenced by protein kinase C pathway and CD14.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to analyze the intervention studies for married immigrant women. METHODS: Based on inclusion criteria, 45 articles published from 2006 to 2011 were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: Among the total amount of studies, 77.8% have been conducted since 2009; and 46.7% of them were for a master's thesis, 11.1% were for a doctoral thesis, and 42.2% were journal articles. Most of them were quantitative research (77.8%) and 71.1% were conducted in urban areas. The most frequently conducted intervention was art therapy (35.6%), whereas 6.7% was health education. In total, 104 outcome indicators were used with 57 (54.8%) in the mental health domain, 29 (27.9%) in the social health domain, and 18 (17.3%) in the physical health domain. The most commonly used outcome indicator was self-esteem (23.2%), and the next, in the order of frequency, included self-efficacy (23.2%), acculturative stress (21.4%), and depression (10.7%). CONCLUSION: Most intervention studies were conducted to support the sociocultural adaptation of married immigrant women, while few intervention studies were conducted to support the health of married immigrant women. To promote the health and quality of life of married immigrant women, many health related intervention programs should be undertaken.
