1.Pap Smear Screening Participation Behavior and Related Factors in Married Immigrant Women.
Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing 2010;16(3):255-265
PURPOSE: This study's aim was to investigate participation in Pap smear screening among married immigrant women and their behavior and its related factors. METHODS: A survey was conducted among 165 married immigrant women in Gyeongsangnam-do from January 1 to March 20, 2010. RESULTS: Results in this study showed that 51.5% have never participated in Pap Smear screening. Among those who have participated in the Pap Smear screening, 10.9% had regular screening, while 37.6% had irregular screening. Pap smear screening behavior was significantly different according to the experiences in health checkup (chi-square=34.009, p<.001) , whether or not there was a hospital the woman regularly visited (chi-square=7.768, p=.021) and perceived barriers (F=3.214, p=.043). CONCLUSION: For improvement of Pap smear participation, this study proposes to develop various nursing intervention programs which can improve perceived barriers in regards to the related variables. In addition, it is necessary to come up with a strategy to advertise the participation in Pap smear screening in a systematic and continuous manner in order to raise womens' awareness and to make married immigrant women realize the importance of regular Pap smear screenings.

Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 1997;33(2):385-389
Paraneoplastic pemphigus is a distinct and rare autoimmune disease characterized by extensive and painful mucosal ulcerations and polymorphic desquamated skin lesions in the setting of an underlying neoplasm, typically of lymphoreticular origin. Thus difficulties in the management of anesthesia can be expected. A 66-years-old man was scheduled for removal of intraabdominal sarcoma associated with paraneoplastic pemphigus. Physical examination showed multiple erythematous bullae, crusts, plaques and target-like lesions on the whole body and desquamated erythematous skin lesions on the back and extremities. In the operating room, his right femoral artery was cannulated with a 20 G, 12.7 cm CVP catheter and left femoral and subclavian veins with 14 G, 20 cm CVP catheters, respectively. After application of 4 % lidocaine spray, his oropharynx and supraglottic area were evaluated under direct laryngoscopy and revealed multiple ulcerations on oral mucosa, but no distinct lesion on supraglottic area. Anesthesia was induced by rapid-sequence method with fentanyl, thiopental sodium and succinylcholine followed by endotracheal intubation. The endotracheal tube was held by a roll gauze around the neck and its cuff was minimally inflated to avoid overpressure against his tracheal wall. After the end of surgery, his oral cavity was suctioned with no remarkable bleeding, and tracheal wall including cuff-contacted area was evaluated under fiberoptic bronchoscopy, revealed intact wall without any bulla or ulceration. The patient was transferred to intensive care unit for proper postoperative management after extubation of endotracheal tube.

6.A Study on the Professional Self Concept, Self Efficacy and Job Satisfaction of Nephrology Nurses.
Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 2000;12(3):345-355
The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship of professional self-concept, self-efficacy and job satisfaction among nephrology nurses. The subject consisted of 84 nephrology nurses who work at 17 hospitals in Kwangju, Chonnam, Chonbuk and Cheju-do. The instrument of this study was a structured questionnaire on professional self-concept, self-efficacy and job satisfaction. The data were collected from August 16 to September 10, 1999 and analyzed by Cronbach alpha, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and Pearson's correlation coefficient by using the SPSS/PC+ program. The results of the research were as follows: 1. The average item scores were 2.73 for professional self-concept and 7.16 for self-efficacy. The average item score of job satisfaction was 3.05. Professional status (3.56) among the component factors of the job satisfaction had the highest value followed by the interaction(3.46), task requirements(3.28), autonomy(2.98), organizational requirement(2.70), and pay(2.22) was the lowest. 2. The relationship between general characteristics and professional self-concept shows a significant difference with regard to position and the nurses' intention to stay. The relationship between general characteristics and self-efficacy shows a significant difference with regard to position and shift. 3. A significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and self-efficacy (r=0.462, p<0.01) was found. A significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and job satisfaction(r=0.486, p<0.01) was found. In conclusion, professional self-concept and job satisfaction of nephrology nurses are significantly related. A professional self-concept is an important factor for job satisfaction of nephrology nurses. Therefore, this study suggested that we should develop programs and policies to increase the professional self-concept of nephrology nurses for their job satisfaction.

Journal of the Korean Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine 2000;24(2):295-300
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of strengthening exercise for isolated lumbar extensor muscles on chronic low back pain patients. METHOD: 28 patients with chronic low back pain in back school program participated in this study. Initially, isometric lumbar extensor strength, 10 point of Visual analog scale (VAS) and questionnaires related to self-experienced symptoms and daily activity (ADL) were checked. Isometric lumbar extensor strength test and strengthening exercise were performed with MedXTM lumbar extensor machine, which was designed to stabilize the pelvis. After 8 weeks of training program, isometric lumbar extensor strength & other pain related variables were checked again in the same way. RESULTS: The results were as follows: 1) After 8 weeks of lumbar extensor strengthening program, isometric lumbar extensor strength was increased at all the measured points significantly (p<0.01). 2) VAS and ADL were improved from 6.7 to 3.7, and from 6.9 to 9.1 respectively (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: 8 weeks of lumbar extensor strengthening program with pelvic stabilization was effective therapeutic tools for patients with chronic low back pain.

Journal of Korean Society of Medical Informatics 1998;4(2):139-144
In this paper, we propose a brain detection algorithm of cross-sectional images through a 3D volume. The proposed brain detection algorithm uses several steps. They are as follows; In the first step, the standard value and downward from input image data are removed. in the second step, the pixels with maximum intensity are removed but undesirable many small areas were appeared as by-products. In order to detect brain, these small areas need to be removed. In the third step, many small areas are removed by masking but some small areas still remained. In the fourth step, they are removed using three-dimensional connectivity. The proposed algorithm was applied to real human MRI data and the brain area was successfully detected.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2004;45(11):1813-1819
PURPOSE: We experienced six cases of late infection of the hydroxyapatite (HA) orbital implant treated with surgical procedures. METHODS: Exposures of the HA and pyogenic granulomas around conjunctival dehiscence helped us to confirm infections of the HA orbital implants. Infections were not controlled by medical therapies so the HA implants were exchanged by silicone implants in all cases. Finally, the silicone implants were replaced by Medpor(R) after the inflammation had been controlled. Dermis fat graft was also performed in two cases due to insufficient conjunctival sac. RESULTS: Infections of HA orbital implants occurred at 62 to 106 months postoperatively. Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were cultured from removed implants. All cases show successful outcomes during 12 to 42 months after Medpor(R) implantations. CONCLUSIONS: Infections of peg-inserted HA orbital implants occurred after five years due to exposure of HA orbital implants. To replace infected HA implants with Medpor(R) implants is considered a functionally and aesthetically effective therapeutic method.
