Inflammatory linear verrucose epidermal nevus(ILVEN) is characterized by an early age of onset, predominance in females, pruritus, unresponsiveness to treatment, and a distinctive inflammatory and psoriasiform histologic appearance. We present two cases of typical ILVEN. One of them was a 16-year-old male, who had had a mild pruritic linear verrucose patch involving the right arm which grew slowly for about 8 years. The other case was a 14-year-old girl whose lesion appeared at the age of 13. This lesion was localized on the right posterior thigh and showed linear distribution and verrucose appearance. Histopathological findings of two cases showed hyperkeratosis with foci of parakeratosis, moderate to marked acanthosis, elongation of the rete ridges, and occasional slight spongiosis, and chronic inflammatory infiltration in the dermis.

Korean Circulation Journal 1991;21(3):539-545
We aimed to evaluate the long term trantment of enalapril on the vascular response in the isolated aorta, and in anesthetized or pithed spontaneously hypertensive rats(SHR). In the isolated aorta, the increase in tension provoked by addition of KC1 16.7mM was attenuated by enalapril treatment(3mg/kg/day for 6 weeks), whereas the increment by addition of NE 0.1uM tension was not influenced. The frequency-dependent vasoconstricution induced by electrical field stimulation of aorta was also attenuated by enalapril treatment. In pithed SHR, the frequency-related hypertension provoked by electrical stimulation(10sec, 1ms with 40V) of sympathetic pregnglionic nerve was also attenuated by enalapril treatment. Neither dose-related vasorelaxation by acetylcholine addition in the aorta nor decrease of DBP by intravenously(i.v.)-injected aetylcholine was altered by enalapril treatment. However, beta2-agonist, salbutamol-induced vasorelaxation in enalapril-treated group, was more remarkable than that in control group. The hypotension by i.v.-but not by intracerebroventricularly-injected salbutamol strengthened by enalapril treatment. These results suggest that the suppression of development of hypertension by enalapril treatment may result from the reduction of adrenergic neurotransmission and activity to voltage dependent calcium channel by acting on vascular smooth muscle itself.

This study was to investigate the histomorphomeric and histological changes of glomeruli and proximal tubules of contralateral kidney in uninephrectomized rat. Rats were Sprague Dawley strain and female 1-year-old. Uninephrectomized rats were sacrificed after 20 days, 30 days, and 40 days. The results were as follows: 1. The mean areas and diameters of the glomeruli were markedly increased at the 30 days. 2. In the glomeruli, the mean nuclear areas of podocytes were markedly increased, but those of cells of the parietal layer were decreased. At the 20 days, those of the endothelial cells were slightly incerased. 3. The lumens of the endothelial cells were irregularly expanded and folded at the 20 days. The basal lamina of the 30 days was markedly thickened in the electron microscopic finding. 4. At the 30 days, the mean areas and mean thicknesses of proximal tubules were markedly increased, but those were not normal. At the 40 days, the mean thicknesses of proximal tubules were restored to the almost normal. 5. Light microscopic changes of the proximal tubules had no difference between the control and the experimental group. In electron microscopical findings, the cytoplasm of the proximal tubules were densely filled with the enlarged mitochondria at the 30 days. At the 40 days, some large vacuoles appeared in the cytoplasm.

Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 2011;16(6):647-660
The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of nutrition education program and pamphlet for the lower grades elementary students focused on individual daily needed food exchange units using Food Exchange System. Program consisted of four lessons (40 min/lesson), "5 major nutrients & function", "6 food group and sources", "daily needed food exchange units for normal body weight", and "smart snack choice and exercise". Pamphlet as activity book was developed for the program. The subjects were 3rd grade elementary students (educated group, 31 vs. non-educated group, 31). Educated group were lessoned as group and/or individual. We examined the differences in nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, dietary intakes and satisfaction of the program and pamphlet. In educated group, there were positive improvements on nutrition knowledge score "function and foods of 5 nutrients" and on dietary attitudes "type of breakfast and snacks". In the evaluation of dietary intakes according to KDRI, there were positive improvements on intakes level of riboflavin, vit. C, folate, Ca, P, Fe and Zn in educated group. In satisfaction with the program and pamphlet, contents, font size, visual, figure, difficulty and program curriculum were over 2.90/3.0. It showed that the developed nutrition education program and pamphlet focused on individual daily needed food exchange units using Food Exchange System improved nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes and nutrients intake level in the lower grades elementary students.

PURPOSE: The Singh index which is based on a plain radiograph has commonly used in assessing the grade of osteoporosis. We studied value of the Singh index in assessing the grade of osteoporosis by obtaining reliability of the Singh index and correlation between the Singh index and bone mineral density. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six observers assessed radiographs of 60 patients suspected osteoporosis. The interobserver and intraobserver agreement of the Singh index were obtained by using kappa statistics. The bone mineral density of proximal femur was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in all patients, and then the results of bone mineral density were compared with those of Singh index by using percentage of variance. RESULTS: The kappa values of interobserver agreement ranged from 0.28 to 0.76 (mean value: 0.45) and the strength of the agreement was moderate. The percentage of variance of BMD which was explained by Singh index was 7.1%. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the Singh index has low clinical value in assessing the grade of osteoporosis

10.Bone Marrow Expression and Plasma Concentration of Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor in Patient with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura.

The Korean Journal of Laboratory Medicine 2003;23(4):229-233
BACKGROUND: Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF) is known to be closely related to myelofibrosis and hematopoiesis including magakaryopoiesis. The main bone marrow finding in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an increased megakaryopoiesis without myelofibrosis. Purposes of this study are to evaluate the changes in bFGF expression pattern in the bone marrow of patients with ITP and to correlate them with the plasma concentrations of bFGF. METHODS: Paraffin-sections of bone marrow biopsies from 17 cases ITP and 7 cases normal controls, without pathological alterations, were investigated by immunohistochemistry for bFGF and CD68. The plasma levels of bFGF were evaluated by enzyme immunoassay in 7 cases of ITP and controls. RESULTS: The bFGF was strongly expressed in stromal cells and weakly in megakaryocytes in normal controls. The density of the bFGF-expressing stromal cells was decreased in 70% (12/17) of the patients with ITP, compared with none in the other controls. The number of stromal cells in patients with ITP was similar to those in the control groups. The bFGF plasma levels were significantly lower in almost all the ITP patients compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that concentrations of bFGF in plasma and bone marrow stromal cells of ITP were decreased. Although the mechanism of low cellular and plasma concentrations of bFGF needs to be elucidated, these findings may complement the serologic and morphological diagnosis of ITP.
