Transrectal ultrasonography is the most effective imaging method of prostate and it is known as an useful mean to detect and evaluate prostatic cancer. We performed transrectal ultrasonography for 200 patients with prostatism, 101 of which were diagnosed subsequently pathologically by prostatic biopsy or operation. Of 27 patients of sonographically suspicious prostatic cancer 10 were confirmed pathologically as cancer, and thered were another 4 patients with prostatic cancer which were classified to benign disease sonographically. The sensitivity and specificity of transrectal ultrasonography in diagnosis of prostatic cancer were 71.4 and 80.5 %. respectively, but the positive predictive value only 37%. The results do not seem that transrectal ultrasonography is superior to digital rectal examination in diagnosis of prostatic cancer. In identifying extracapsular extension of prostatic cancer, transrectal ultrasonography is thought to be potentially valuable, but further experiences are necessary.

Ultrasonography, computed tomography and excretory urography in 25 patients with renal cell carcinoma were reviewed to determine their accuracy in predicting tumor stage. Staging was correct with ultrasonography in 60% of the patients, with computed tomography in 68% and with excretory urography in 40%. There was one patient, in which tumor was not identified on excretory urography. From these results, ultrasonography appears to be a good procedure as computed tomography to evaluate the stage of renal cell carcinomas.

It is well known that the development and progression of prostate cancer are androgen dependent and the action of androgen in prostate is mediated by androgen receptor. But the role of androgen receptor in the development and progression of prostate cancer have been not defined. Recently, the development of mmunohistochemical assay has provided new opportunities for study of androgen receptor. Immunohistochemical stainings were performed for 3 cases of normal prostate, 17 of BPH and 17 of prostate cancer. Specimens were obtained from cystoprostatectomy of bladder cancer patients(normal prostate), suprapubic prostatectomy and transurethral resection of prostate(BPH) and radical prostatectomy and prostate biopsies(prostate cancer). Androgen receptors were stained predominantly in nucleus of glandular cell. Normal prostates were stained homogeneously and heterogeneous staining of androgen receptor was more in pro- state cancer than BPH and in high grade(Gleason`s score 5-10) than low grade (Gleason`s score 2-4). Total intensity score of normal prostate, BPH and prostate cancer were 196.6+/-20.8, 202. 4+/-54.3 and 180.6+/-47.0 respectively and cancer tissues were stained the least intensely, but statistically not significant(P > 0.05). Staining of prostate cancer revealed less intensity in high grade(161.8+/-36.8, P < 0.05) than low grade(215.0+/-46.8). It is postulated that the distribution of androgen receptor in the prostate cancer was correlated with cellular differentiation and also it is suggesting that androgen receptor is closely related with development of androgen independent cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hypoalbuminemia occurs frequently in renal transplant recipients immediately after renal transplantation. We studied the regulation of hepatic albumin synthesis by cyclosporin A (CsA) in Huh7 cells. METHODS: Huh7 cells were incubated with various concentrations of CsA for 4, 8, 16, and 24 hours. Albumin was measured in Huh7 cell-conditioned medium by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot. Albumin mRNA expression was analyzed by Northern blotting in CsA-treated cells. RESULTS: CsA (10(-7)-10(-4) M) inhibited albumin synthesis in Huh7 cells in a dose- dependent manner. A Western blot analysis for albumin in the conditioned medium released from CsA-treated (10(-7)-10(-5) M) cells also showed significant inhibition of albumin synthesis in a dose-dependent manner. Vehicle (olive oil) did not affect albumin synthesis. In contrast, a Northern blot analysis revealed no inhibition of albumin mRNA expression by CsA at any time point from 1-24 hours, indicating that the inhibition of albumin synthesis occurred at the translational level. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that inhibition of hepatic albumin synthesis by high dose CsA contributes to the hypoalbuminemia in renal transplant recipients.
