OBJECTIVETo study the history of introduction and herbal medicine of Pogostemon cablin by textual researches and clarify the confusion in literatures.
METHODTextual research on historical literatures, practical applications and field investigation were adopted.
RESULTThe varieties of P. cablin for therapeutic uses were not chaotic, however there has existed confusion between P. cablin and Agastache rugosus in descriptions of appellation, habitat and characteristic of the original plants.
CONCLUSIONIt was proved that the term "Huoxiang" in Chinese medicinal works before Ming Dynasty was pointed to P. cablin. The cultivation history of P. cablin in China was traced to Liang Dynasty or before.

Umbilical metastases from intraperitoneal malignancies are universally referred to Sister Mary Joseph's nodule (SMJN).The most frequent primary sites include the stomach and ovaries. SMJN caused by colon cancer is very uncommon. Likewise, carcinoma of the right side colon metastasizing to inguinal lymph nodes is considered almost impossible. To the best of our knowledge, no report of right side colon cancer synchronously involving both the umbilicus and inguinal lymph nodes is available. We present a case of right side colon cancer(RSCC) metastasizing to the umbilicus and inguinal lymph nodes, which was confirmed by pathology and immuohistochemistry.

OBJECTIVETo screen the radiosensitivity-related genes of colorectal cancer cells.
METHODSGene expression profiles of two different radiosensitivity cells(colorectal cancer cell line Lovo and SW480) were obtained by cDNA array and the differences of gene expression profiles between the two cells were analyzed.
RESULTSGenes of more than 2-fold expressive differentiation were screened. In Lovo cells, 908 up-regulated genes were found, including higher expression genes CEACAM5, THBS1, SERPINE2, ARL7, HPGD, while 1312 genes were down-regulated. In SW480 cells, higher expression genes were SCD, NQ01, LYZ, KRT20 and ATP1B1.
CONCLUSIONGene profiles can reflect the radiosensitivity of colorectal cancer cells, which will provide the choice for the further study of radiosensitivity in colorectal cancer.

To study the relationship of oxidative, antioxidative constituents and antioxidases in blood with chronic cholecystitis containing gallstone, levels of lipoperoxides (LPO), nitric oxide (NO), vitamin C(VC), vitamin E (VE) and β-carotene (β-CAR) in plasma as well as level of LPO, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in erythrocytes were investigated by spectrophotometric assay in 107 patients with this condition (PCg) and 100 healthy volunteers (HVs). Compared with HVs group, the average value of LPO and NO in plasma and that of LPO in erythrocytes of PCg group were significantly increased (P<0.0001), while that of VC, VE and β-CAR in plasma and the average activities of SOD, CAT and GSH-Px in erythrocytes were significantly decreased (P<0.0001). Linear regression and correlation analysis for 107 preoperative PCg showed that the value of LPO and NO in plasma and that of LPO in erythrocytes of PCg gradually increased (P<0.0001), representing a significant linear positive correlation. The value of VC, VE and β-CAR in plasma and that of SOD, CAT and GSH-Px in erythrocytes of PCg gradually decreased (P<0.0001), representing a significant linear negative correlation. Stepwise regression and correlation analysis for 107 preoperative PCg suggested that the closest correlation was observed between the course of disease and the value of NO and VC in plasma and that of SOD, GSH-Px and LPO in erythrocytes, r=0.7306, F=32.1408, P<0.0001. Compared with the preoperative PCg group, the average value of LPO and NO in plasma and that of LPO in erythrocytes of the postoperative PCg group were significantly decreased (P<0.0001). Furthermore, the average value of VC in plasma and that of SOD, CAT and GSH-Px in erythrocytes of the postoperative PCg group were significantly increased (P<0.0001), whereas no significant difference was found between their average value of VE and β-CAR in plasma. These findings suggested that oxidative stress was an aggravating pathological condition in PCg group. Therefore, we recommend that in treating PCg, antioxidants such as VC, VE, β-CAR should be given in order to alleviate their potential oxidative damages.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the correlation of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of XRCC1 gene to hereditary susceptibility of colorectal cancer.
METHODSXRCC1 genotypes in 124 colorectal cancer patients and 214 matched healthy people as control were analyzed by SnaP Shot SNP-typing technique. Five different inheritance models including codominant, dominant, recessive, overdominant and log-additive were analyzed using logistic regression model. The haplotype distribution was estimated with phase and its correlation with the risk of colorectal cancer was evaluated.
RESULTSThe frequencies of mutant 25487G-A, 25489C-T and 1799782C-T alleles were 0.20, 0.11, 0.32 respectively in the patients, and 0.23, 0.13, 0.34 in the controls. There was no significant correlation of polymophisms of XRCC1 gene to the risk of colorectal cancer in 5 different inheritance models (P>0.05). GCT, GCC, ACC and GTC were the most common haplotypes and the odds ratios were 1, 1.35, 0.90 and 0.84 respectively. There was no significant difference of distribution between 2 groups in haplotypes.
CONCLUSIONPolymorphisms of XRCC1 gene, including rs25487, rs25489, rs1799782, are not associated with to the risk of colorectal cancer.
