Yonsei Medical Journal 1999;40(5):425-429
To determine the relationship between the urinary endothelin (ET-1), nitric oxide (NO) levels and the clinical, pathologic types of primary glomerulonephritis (GN) patients, urinary levels of ET-1 and NO were detected in 27 patients with biopsy-proven primary GN and 12 normal controls by radioimmunoassay and by copper-plated and cadmium column reduction assay, respectively. The results showed that urinary ET-1 levels in the patients with primary GN were significantly higher than in normal controls (p < 0.01), while the urinary ET-1 levels in patients with moderate mesangial proliferation GN were significantly higher than those in patients with mild mesangial proliferation GN (p < 0.05). Urinary ET-1 levels in patients whose clinical feature was nephrotic syndrome were found to be higher than in patients whose clinical feature was nephritic syndrome. However, urinary NO levels were to the contrary (p < 0.05). The ratio of ET-1/NO in primary GN patients was significantly higher than that in normal controls, and it positively correlated with the 24-hour urinary excretion of protein. These results suggest that urinary ET-1 levels are related to the proliferation of mesangial cells. The imbalance between ET-1 and NO may be related to the pathogenesis of primary GN and the occurrence of proteinuria.

Chinese Journal of Applied Physiology 2012;28(6):568-571
OBJECTIVEWhile the technology of the molecular sieve oxygen generation system(MSOGS) onboard was used, pilots could not breathe pure oxygen to eliminate nitrogen during a high altitude flight. There is no report whether it is a threat to altitude decompression sickness(ADS) or not in that condition. This experiment was intended to observe the effects of breathing different oxygen-rich gases of MSOGS on denitrogenation, so that we could make the medical physiological requirements for MSOGS on-board and provide experimental basis for aeromedical supply.
METHODEight healthy males were breathed oxygen-rich gases (60%,70%,80%,90%and 99.6%) in turn for 60 min, and the concentration of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and argon at the end of expiration interval in the oxygen mask were continuously measured by a flight mass spectrometer through the oxygen mask. According to the variety of the denitrogenation rate by breathing different oxygen-rich gases, its change law was analyzed.
RESULTSThere were significant differences (P < 0.05) about denitrogenation rate in different oxygen-rich gases due to different oxygen concentration and breathing time. The denitrogenation rate of pure oxygen was higher than that of the others. It was indicated that the concentration of nitrogen in lung would decrease along with the increase in oxygen concentration of oxygen-rich gases, and the nitrogen concentration in the lung almost decreased by 50% or even more if people were breathed 60%-90% oxygen-rich gas longer than 60 s.
CONCLUSIONThe man-made respiration environment of low nitrogen can be provided by breathing oxygen-rich gases, although the denitrogenation velocity of breathing oxygen-rich gases is lower than that of breathing pure oxygen. So it can be used as a measure to eliminate and lower the nitrogen in the body to prevent from ADS.

Chinese Journal of Surgery 2006;44(1):18-22
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effect of anatomic hepatectomy performed under vascular exclusion in management of hepatolithiasis.
METHODSFrom May 2002 to March 2005, fifty-three patients with unilateral hepatolithiasis underwent anatomic hepatectomy with exposure and control of inferior vena cava and main trunk of hepatic veins. The hepatic lobes involved by hepatolithiasis were left lateral lobe (S(2), S(3)) in 12 patients, left lobe (S(2), S(3), S(4)) in 26 patients, right posterior lobe (S(6), S(7)) in 8 patients and right lobe (S(5), S(6), S(7), S(8)) in 7 patients. Atrophy of involved hepatic lobes was found in 38 patients. Fourteen patients had experienced more than one operation on biliary tract. Nine patients showed the symptoms of acute cholangitis preoperatively and 4 patients complicated with liver abscess.
RESULTSVascular exclusion was successfully performed on all patients to control the blood inflow and outflow of liver. The anatomically resected hepatic lobes were left lateral lobe (S(2), S(3)) in 12 patients, left lobe (S(2), S(3), S(4)) in 26 patients, right posterior lobe (S(6), S(7)) in 8 patients and right lobe (S(5), S(6), S(7), S(8)) in 7 patients. Except hepatectomy, the additional procedures performed on the patients were choledocholithotomy in 39 cases, choledocho-jejunostomy in 5 cases. The majority of complications were bile leakage in 3 cases, subphrenic infection in 2 cases, hydrothorax in 5 cases and wound infection in 5 cases.
CONCLUSIONSAnatomic hepatectomy under vascular exclusion is effective treatment to eradicate intrahepatic stone foci in case of unilateral hepatolithiasis, and help to reduce intraoperative blood loss and decrease postoperative complications.
