Objective: The expression of WNT5A is associated with aggressive tumor biology and poor clinical outcomes of various types of cancer. However, its function in the cell migration of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) should be elucidated. Methods:The expres-sion of WNT5A in SCLC and normal lung tissues was detected by immunohistochemisty. The correlation between the expression and clinical characteristics of WNT5A was analyzed. The function of WNT5A in regulating cell migration was studied in DMS153 cell line in vitro. Small interfering RNA (SiRNA) was used to knock down WNT5A. Wound healing and Transwell tests were used to determine the migration rate of DMS153. The phosphorylated JNK expression was detected by Western blot analysis. Results:The WNT5A expression was higher in SCLC tissues than that of normal lung tissues. WNT5A was correlated with clinical stages, lymph nodes, and distance me-tastasis in SCLC. The high expression of WNT5A was accompanied by abnormal levels of NSE and Pro-GRP. The WNT5A phosphoryla-tion of JNK promoted cell migration in vitro. Conclusion:The expression of WNT5A in SCLC is high and correlated with tumor metasta-sis. The influence of WNT5A/JNK on the cell migration property of DMS153 supports the concept that WNT5A can initiate the cell mi-gration of SCLC, which suggested that WNT5A may be a marker and can be potentially used as an effective therapeutic target for the SCLC metastasis.

BACKGROUND:Periplaneta americana extract is recognized to have a positive effect on gastrointestinal mucosa. This study aimed to investigate the effects of periplaneta americana extract on immune function, nutrition status and gastrointestinal complications of early enteral nutrition patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). METHODS:Patients with SIRS were randomly divided into two groups:treatment and control groups. All patients in the two groups received conventional therapy including enteral nutrition, but periplaneta americana extract, an additional Chinese medicine, was given to the patients in the treatment group. At the beginning of treatment (0 day) and 1, 3, and 7 days after treatment, the levels of immunoglobulin (IgA), total lymphocyte count (TLC), total protein (TP) and prealbumin (PA) were respectively tested in patients' venous blood. The incidences of bloating, diarrhea, aspiration pneumonia and high blood sugar at 7 days after treatment were recorded. The mortality of the patients in 28 days was recorded. RESULTS:At 3 and 7 days after treatment, the levels of IgA and TLC in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). At 7 days after treatment, the levels of TP and PA in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). The incidences of bloating and diarrhea in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group, the differences were significant (P<0.05). The mortality of treatment group was lower than that of the control group (P>0.05). CONCLUSION:Periplaneta americana extract could reduce gastrointestinal complications and improve immune function and nutritional status in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

Objective To investigate the value of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system in the early diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) through observing the primary regularity of the electrical impedance changes in SAH animal models as well as the possible mechanism of this regularity. Methods The experimental SAH models in piglets were intmduced by one-time injection of fresh autologous blood into the cisterna magna. We observed the changes of the two-dimensional imaging with EIT system used for cominual dynamic monitoring to the models. Results The models were successfully introduced in 8 piglets. In the forepan of the injection, resistivity configuration decreased at the anterior region of the head as well as the posterior of that. At the time of finishing injection, the resistivity configuration reached the negative max value. After injection, resistivity configuration at the anterior region of the head gradually came back. But the resistivity configuration at the posterior region of the head increased persistenny. Conclusions Althouth the configuration of human head is so complex that limits the application of EIT on the head,it does have certain sensitivity in the diagnosis of SAH and can localize the hemorrhage site, so EIT may be applied widely in early diagnosis and assistant treatment of SAH in clinical.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effects on the lower limbs function after lumbar or sacral nerve root transferring to reconstruct urination function.
METHODSNine patients with bladder dysfunction and normal lower limb function after spinal cord injury were treated with anastomosis the S2 or S3 nerve root with the normal lumbar or sacral nerve root to reconstruct a new bladder artificial reflex arc. Then the alterations on the sensation and motor function of the lower limb after the surgery were observed.
RESULTSMyodynamia of the legs decreased slightly, and the decreasing about half grade of the myodynamia in the plantar flexion of the ankles were detected in 4 of 9 patients with S1 transferring. And the myodynamia recovered 3 months postoperatively. No obvious decreasing of the myodynamia appeared in the other cases.
CONCLUSIONNo obvious effects on the motor function can be found after the single lumbar or sacral nerve root transferring to reconstruct urination function.

OBJECTIVETo construct four different micro- and nano-phase titanium film models and investigate the characteristics of their surface micro-topography.
METHODSFour different titanium films were prepared on commercial titanium discs, by direct current magnetron sputtering, at ambient, 100, 250, 380 degrees C substrate temperature, respectively. Their surface topography and crystal sizes were investigated using atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The size of granule and surface roughness in different group was calculated and compared.
RESULTSAll samples were covered by a thin film consisting of dense round or ovaloid granules. The granules and crystals was growing as the substrate temperature increasing. The Ti substrate had greater effect on the surface topography of film compared with Si substrate. This kind of complex topography caused the surface roughness of Ti substrate group decreased as the granules growing.
CONCLUSIONIn our study, four different micro- and nano-phase titanium film models were constructed for our coming investigation of their topographical influence on biological reaction of proteins and cells. Basic data on surface features was obtained for next in vitro and in vivo experiment.

OBJECTIVETo measure the positional changes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk and condyle with insertion of anterior repositioning splint (ARS) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for further understanding of the splint therapy mechanisms.
METHODSTwenty-two patients with temporomandibular joint clicks were included. 31 TMJs were diagnosed as anterior disk displacement with reduction (disk-displaced group), and the other 13 TMJs were normal (normal group). All joints were scanned oblique-sagittally by MRI before splint treatment in three positions including closed-mouth position of centric occlusion (the position before insertion of ARS), incisors' edge to edge position, and mandibular least forward protrusion position (the position after insertion of ARS).
RESULTS1) Disk-condyle angle: In closed-mouth position, the average angle was 54.23 degrees in the disk-displaced group, while it was 9.80 degrees in the normal group; in incisors' edge to edge position and mandibular least forward protrusion position, the angle was reduced to normal in most of the disk-displaced cases. 2) Disk position: From closed-mouth position to incisors' edge to edge position or mandibular least forward protrusion position, the forward displaced disk moved backward significantly, while the disk with normal position did not change significantly in the three positions. 3) Condyle position: From closed-mouth position to incisors' edge to edge position or mandibular least forward protrusion position, the condyle moved forward and downward significantly both in the disk-displaced group and in the normal group.
CONCLUSIONWith insertion of the splint, the condyle moved anteriorly and inferiorly and the disk moved posteriorly, most of the anterior displaced disks could be reduced to normal positions in the joint fossa. The result indicated that the splint protruded condyle forward and prevented the backward reduced disk from displacing forward again during mouth closing.

AIMTo investigate the preventive effects of the cerebro cellular growth peptide (CCGP) on gentamycin-induced inner ear damage in guinea pigs, and to clarify its mechanism.
METHODSThe hypoacusis severity and enzymatic activity in the cochlear hair cells were examined by brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and histochemistry, respectively. The damaged hair cells was counted in three groups.
RESULTSCCGP reduced the elevated BAEP reaction thresholds. It protected activities of mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase and lysosome acid phosphatase in the cochlear hair cells. The number of damaged hair cells in the CCGP group was less than that in the gentamycin (GM) group.
CONCLUSIONCCGP can reduce GM ototoxicity. The mechanism may be associated with the protective activity of mitochondrial enzyme, the maintenance of lysosome intactness, energy metabolism of the cochlear hair cells, and reduction of autolysis of hair cells induced by hydrolase over flowing from lysosome.
