Teratoma is one of germ cell tumor, common neoplasm in women of reproductive age, but it can arise at any age. Its malignant transformation is rare, less than 2%, frequently at older age. Nearly all the cases are squamous, sarcomatous and adenomatous transformation. Here we present a case of mixed transformation, adeno-squamous cell carcinoma with brief review of the concerned literature.

Actinomycosis is an oppoturnistic infection of actinomyces, which are relatively avirulent endogenous oral commensals. After trauma or infection, they breach the normally protective mucosal barriers to invade adjacent soft tissue structures. Lesions routinely contain other bacteria, the normal resident flora at the site of primary infection, which act synergistically with actinomyces species to provoke this unique infection, which range from an acute suppurative process to a chronic fibrotic process. According to epidemic studies about pelvic actinomycosis, it should be significantly related to IUD(intrauterine device). It is accounted that IUD cause chronic intrauterine infection, tissue injury and act as nucleus for parasitic infestation. Here we present a case of pelvic actinomycosis related to IUD with brief review of the concerned literature.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the fetal doppler flow velocimetry and birth weight in low risk pregnancy population. METHODS: From December 1995 to May 1996, We prospectively performed doppler study in 254 uncomplicated, term pregnant women, who visited Pohang Hospital, Dongguk University. Using pulsed color doppler, we measured umbilical artery RI, middle cerebral artery RI and middle cerebral-umbilical artery RI ratio within one week before delivery. RESULTS: The result was that low birth weight group (below 2500gm) had very significant lationship with umbilical artery RI(P<0.01), middle cerebral artery RI(P<0.05) and middle cerebral-umbilical artery RI ratio(P<0.05), but there was no significant relationship in these blood flow indices between normal birth weight group (2501gm- 3999gm) and macrosomia group (above 4000gm). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that application of doppler ultrasonopaphy in the assessment of fetal weight is somewhat helpful for identification of low birth weight, not for macrosomia.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the sensitivity and characteristics of F-wave abnormalities detected by various parameters in patients with lumbosacral radiculopathies and to evaluate the relationship of F-wave with needle EMG. METHOD: The study was performed on 37 patients with lumbosacral disc herniation, which was confirmed by MRI and the patients with clinical lumbosacral radiculopathies (single lesion of L5 in 28 cases, S1 in 1 case, double lesion of L5 and S1 in 8 cases). F-waves were recorded by stimulating peroneal and tibial nerves at the ankle. Minimal latency (F min), maximal latency (F max), latency difference between F min and F max (F dif), mean duration (F dur) and side to side difference between sides in F min and F max were measured. Conventional nerve conduction study and needle EMG were also examined. RESULTS: The abnormal parameters of F-wave were so varied that the results could not lead any apparent conclusions as to which parameters were the most sensitive. However, F min and F dur seemed to be abnormal more frequently than F max and F dif. While the needle EMG showed abnormalities in 28 patients (75.7%), at least one of the different F-wave parameters was found to be abnormal in 18 patients (48.6%). Moreover, no significant relationship was observed between the abnormal findings of EMG and F-wave (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The conventional needle EMG appears to be the more useful electrophysiological technique in the diagnosis of lumbosacral radiculopathies. Concerning the additional usefulness of F-wave, further study will be necessary.

Human untreated costal cartilage was compared with lyophilized human costal cartilage which was treated with defatting solution for 48 hours and freeze drying for 72 hours (-70degree C, 10??bar) on the tendency of distortion. All cartilages, which were taken from six cadavers, were carved 5x5x30mm in size on principle of the balanced cross section. Their distortions were evaluated by two methods at intervals of one week, one month, three months, six months after experiment. At first, the degree of distortion was grossly graded with four steps: grade O; no distortion / grade I; minimal distortion / grade II; moderate distortion / grade III; severe distortion. Second method is measurement and quantification of distortion in the horizontal and vertical plane of cartilage.Untreated cartilage is shown to be an unsatisfactory material, with only three(12%) of the 25 cartilages being cosmetically acceptable(grade 0 and 1) after 6 months. In lyophilized cartilage, 18(94%) of the 19 cartilages were cosmetically acceptable(grade 0 and 1) at 6 months. This figure is highly significant(p<0.01). In another method, distortion in the horizontal(h) and vertical (v) planes of cartilage were measured, and mean values of ???? were calculated. In untreated group, the mean values of ???? were 0.82 at 1 week, 0.91 at 1 month, 1.13 at 3 months, and 1.31 at 6 months. In lyophilized group, the mean values were 0.27 at 1 week, 0.29 at 1 month, 0.40 at 3 months and 0.47 at 6 months. All values were statistically significant(p<0.01).

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the findings of the transligamnetous type of the herniated lumbar disc (HLD) with magnetic resonance MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the MR images of surgically proven 20 cases of transligamentous type of HLD from January 1, 1992 to August 20, 1992. The MR imaging was performed with 1. 0T MR unit, using sagittal spin echo (SE) and axial gradient echo (GE) techniques. RESULTS: The results were as follows;1) the interruption of black line of the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) was identified in 19 levels and 17 levels in sagittal SE and axial GE images, retrospectively;2) the widening of adjacent epidural fat space was demonstrated in 16 cases of central or posterolateral HLD. The herniated disc material, as compared with the parent intervertebral disc, showed intermediate signal intensity (SI) in 19 and low SI in 1 level on T1WI, high SI in 10, intermediate SI in 7, low SI in levels on T2WI, and high SI in 10, intermediate SI in 9, low SI in 1 level on GE images. CONCLUSION: The most important sign of the transligamentous type HLD on MRI was the interruption of the black line with additional finding of the widening of adjacent epidural fat space. The MR signal intensity of the herniated disc was variable. Axial GE image was valuable for the evaluation of the direction of HLD and it relationship with neural structure, but had no addiational information for the degree and biochemical change of HLD over SE image.

We experienced a case of congenital rubella syndrome manifesting patent ductus arteriosus, petechiae, microcephaly, intrauterine growth retardation, and hepatomegaly in one-day-old female newborn infant. Congenital rubella syndrome was confirmed by positive results of anti-rubella IgM in the sera of patient. Anti-rubella IgM was negative in the sera of mother, while anti-rubella IgG was positive.
