1.A Study on Womens Level of Educational Need & Knowledge about Routine Episiotomy and the Degree of Discomforts and Pain after Episiotomy.
Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing 2001;7(3):393-406
The purpose of this study was to find out women's need and level of knowledge about episiotomy, pain and discomfort related to episiotomy on a cross-sectional survey design. The subjects were 102 postpartal women agreed on oral consent. 34 postpartal women admitted at obstetric ward of H university hospital, 34 postpartal women admitted at 2 Sanhujoriwons, and 34 women within one year afterbirth. They were selected in Seoul, Korea. Data were collected from July, 1 to September 30, 2000, by a structured questionnaire. The instrument used for this study was a questionaire consisted of 5 items of general characteristics, 12 items of obstetric characteristics, 10 items of level of knowledge (Chronbach alpha .8176), 8 items of need of education(Chronbach alpha.8836), 3 items of pain (Chronbach alpha.9252), and 3 items of discomfort (Chronbach alpha.8092). The data were analyzed by the SPSS/PC+ program using t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe test as a post hoc and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of the study were as follows; 1. 63.2% of respondents had right answer on 6-8 items among 10 items. Only 4.4% of women got right answer on 10 items all. 2. The need of education was high(4.45%) on all items and the range of score was 4.25~4.64. 3. The strength of pain was the highest within one week afterbirth(5.93/10) and became lower in 8-14 days afterbirth(2.55). And after 15days of postpartum, the pain level became to the lowest level(1.08). However, pain was delayed until more than one month afterbirth. 4. The level of discomfort was the highest one week afterbirth(6.88/10) and became lower in 8-14 days afterbirth(4.20). And after 15days of postpartum, the discomfort level became to the lowest level(2.47). Universally, the degree of discomfort was higher than pain. 5. There was a strong positive correlation between discomforts and pain (r=.752**) and weak positive correlation between discomforts and the level of educational need(r=.308*). In conclusion, women have a right to choose whether she will have episiotomy or not according to her decision making based on the comprehensive knowledge of episiotomy before they get episiotomy with consent process and explanation in detail. Women health care providers like nurses have a responsibility to do conscious raising and empowerment for women so that they could lead themselves to choose given medical treatments for women's health and wellbeing and the quality of life in her life cycle.

4.Whistling Face Syndrome 5 Cases Report in 3 Generation
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1987;22(1):321-324
The “whistling face” syndrome is a dominantly inherited disorder involving the face and musculoskeletal system. Sjnce its first description in 1938 by Freeman and Sheldon, sporadic case reports have appeared in the literature under various syndromes, cranio-carpo-tarsal dystrophy, cranio-facio-corporal syndrome, cranio-carpo-tarsal dysplasia, whistling face-Windmill Vane Hand syndrome and the chirocheilo-podalic syndrome. This report reviews the clinical manifestation of 5 cases of whistling face syndrome in 3 generation in one family.

5.Combined Procedure of Open Reduction and Shortening of the Femur in Treatment of Congenital Dislocation of the Hips in Older Children
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1989;24(2):437-442
Combined procedue of open reduction and shortening of femur for treatment of congenital hip dislocation in the older child is known to minmize the incidence of avascular necrosis, redislocation and stiffness. Thirty six hips in thirty three children were operated upon in the past six years with combined procedue of open reduction and shortening of femur. And twenty eight hips in twenty five children who were followed up more than one year were analysed. By the results, we obtained excellent in twenty nine percent, good in fifty three percent, fair in fourteen percent and poor in four percent.

6.Transfer of the Medial Hamstring or Biceps Femoris to the Patella
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1989;24(6):1585-1589
Two hundred and thirty-seven patients who had paresis or paralysis of the quadriceps muscles underwent a transfer of the biceps femoris by Caldwell's method or medial hamstring to the patella. Seventy-six legs of seventy-two patients who had followed-up more than one year were reviewed and analysed. The results showed there was an overall improvement measured by decreased extension lag in all age groups and relatively uniform good results in young age group. Again we reviewed the forty-six patients chronologically to eliminate the outer factors who were transfered normal biceps femoris or medial hamstring power to absent quadriceps. By that we found the extension power of the knee joint after muscle transfer had been decreased by age.

7.Therapeutic potential of resveratrol for the treatment of type III Gaucher disease
Neurology Asia 2015;20(1):43-48
Gaucher disease is the most common lysosomal storage disorder. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol
that possesses a wide range of beneficial effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and
neuroprotective activities. The aim of this study was to determine if resveratrol has a therapeutic
effect on primary fibroblast cells derived from a patient with type III Gaucher disease. 3-(4,5-
Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays were performed to determine
the effect of resveratrol on cell survival. The expression levels of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF),
Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), caspase-3, acetyl-coenzyme A acetyltransferase 1 (ACAT1), E3-
binding protein (E3BP), and citrate synthase (CS) were evaluated by western blotting to characterize
the effect of resveratrol treatment on Gaucher disease cells. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was
carried out to measure changes in glucosylceramide levels in resveratrol-treated patient cells. Resveratrol
increased the viability of patient cells compared to that of untreated control cells. Resveratrol treatment
dose-dependently decreased AIF, Bax, and cleaved caspase-3 levels, whereas ACAT1, E3BP, and CS
expression dose-dependently increased. TLC analysis showed reduced levels of glucosylceramides
in resveratrol-treated patient cells. These findings demonstrate that resveratrol can relieve cellular
stress due to glucosylceramide accumulation, and suggest that it should be studied further as a new
therapeutic approach for the treatment of Gaucher disease.

Journal of the Korean Society for Microbiology 1999;34(3):233-243
To search the effective antisense oligonucleotide that inhibit the growth of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), six kinds of phosphorothioate oligodeoxynucleotides (S-ODNs) were synthesized and the antiviral activity was assessed by measuring cytopathic effect in Vero cells infected with HSV-1. Of the three dodecamer S-ODNs, cornplernentary to the translation initiation site of IE2 (AS2) and scrambled S-ODN (AS1) showed more significant antiherpetic activity than AS4 complementary to the IE4. Accordingly, the antiviral effect of dodecamer S-ODN was not specific. In contrast to the no inhibitory effect of sense strand S-ODN of ICP8 (AS6), two S-ODNs complementary to the translation initiation site of ICP8 (AS3) and that of IE1 (AS5) showed potent antiherpetic activity assessed in vitro HSV-1 virus yield assay. Antiherpetic effect of AS3 was decreased in proportion to the addition of AS6. The synthesis of viral protein ICPS and IE1 were inhibited in AS3 and AS5 treated HSV-1 infected Vero cells, respectively. These findings suggest that antiherpetic effect of AS3 is specifically mediated by targeting ICPS. S-ODNs had no effect on Vero cell viability. The data suggest that the 19-mer S-ODNs may be effective in antiviral chemotherapy.
