Chinese Medical Journal 2002;115(6):892-896
OBJECTIVETo study the surgical technique and results of laryngeal function preservation in treatment of hypopharyngeal carcinoma.
METHODSA retrospective review of 305 patients with malignant neoplasms of the hypopharynx (279 males, 26 females, age ranging from 14 to 77 years) was performed from 1978 to 1996. In the 305 patients (stage I, n = 6; stage II, n = 12; stage III, n = 82; stage IV, n = 205), the sites of origin were pyriform sinus (n = 234), postcricoid (n = 21), posterior pharyngeal wall (n = 35) and superior hypopharynx (n = 15). Of the 305 patients, 206 (67.54%, stage I, n = 6; stage II, n = 12; stage III, n = 65; stage IV, n = 123) were surgically treated with laryngeal function preserved and 99 (32.46%, stage III, n = 17; stage IV, n = 82) had no laryngeal function preserved. All had 55-75 Gy radiotherapy according to their need.
RESULTSA total of 206 patients (67.54%) were surgically treated with laryngeal function preserved, totally (voice, respiration and deglutition) in 139 (67.5%) and partially (voice and deglutition) in 67 (32.5%). 99 patients (32.46%) had no laryngeal function preserved. The overall 5-year survival rate of the 305 patients was 44.8%, which segregated to 83% (stage I), 71% (stage II), 58% (stage III), and 36% (stage IV). The 5-year survival of the laryngeal function preserved group was 48% (n = 66), the rate of complications 28% (n = 58) and the rate of residual tumor 5.8% (n = 12), compared with the no laryngeal function preserved group 37% (n = 20), 31.3% (n = 31), and 6% (n = 6) (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONOnly a small proportion of patients (31/305, 10%) with hypopharyngeal carcinoma who require total laryngectomy and preservation of the laryngeal function is feasible for eradication of tumor and preservation of laryngeal function.

Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery 2016;19(1):75-79
OBJECTIVETo investigate the expression difference of DNA mismatch repair gene hMLH1 and hMSH2 between schistosomiasis-associated colorectal cancer and sporadic colorectal cancer.
METHODClinical and pathological data of colorectal cancer patients receiving operations in Zhejiang Cancer Hospital between January 2008 and December 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into schistosomiasis group(n=80) and sporadic group (n=258) according to the preoperative history and pathologic results. Pathological specimens were collected and tissue chips were made to analyze the expression of hMLH1 and hMSH2 by immunohistochemistr.
RESULTSCompared with sporadic group, older age [(62.2 ± 9.6) year vs. (57.2 ± 11.7) year, P=0.000)], lower platelet level [(197.0 ± 59.6) × 10(9)/L vs. (217.0 ± 84.3) × 10(9)/L, P=0.02] and lower WBC level [(5.9 ± 1.9) × 10(9)/L vs. (6.6 ± 2.8) × 10(9)/L, P=0.02] were found in schistosomiasis group. Ratio of low differentiation-undifferentiation tumor was significantly higher in schistosomiasis group [44.2% (34/77) vs. 4.9% (12/247), P<0.05]. Lower positive rate of hMLH1 expression [77.5% (62/80) vs. 98.1% (253/258), P=0.000] and hMSH2 expression [75.0% (60/80) vs. 95.3% (246/258), P=0.000] was found in schistosomiasis group compared with sporadic group. Concurrent schistosomiasis was one of the risk factors of hMLH1/hMSH2 deficiency (RR: 0.913, 95% CI: 0.836-0.997, P=0.043), but not an independent factor (RR: 0.951, 95% CI: 0.867-1.043, P=0.286).
CONCLUSIONSchistosomiasis is associated with lower positive expression of hMLH1 and hMSH2, which indicates that hMLH1/hMSH2 deficiency may be a potential mechanism of schistosomiasis inducing carcinogenesis of colorectal cancer.

A microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based microbial electrochemical sensor was developed for real-time on-line monitoring of heavy metals in water environment. The microbial electrochemical sensor was constructed with staggered flow distribution method to optimize the parameters such as external resistance value and external circulation rate. The inhibition of concentration of simulated heavy metal wastewater on voltage under optimal parameters was analyzed. The results showed that the best performance of MFC electrochemical sensor was achieved when the external resistance value was 130 Ω and the external circulation rate was 1.0 mL/min. In this case, the microbial electrochemical sensors were responsive to 1-10 mg/L Cu2+, 0.25-1.25 mg/L Cd2+, 0.25-1.25 mg/L Cr6+ and 0.25-1.00 mg/L Hg2+ within 60 minutes. The maximum rejection rates of the output voltage were 92.95%, 73.11%, 82.76% and 75.80%, respectively, and the linear correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.95. In addition, the microbial electrochemical sensor showed a good biological reproducibility. The good performance for detecting heavy metals by the newly developed microbial electrochemical sensor may facilitate the real-time on-line monitoring of heavy metals in water environment.
