International Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2008;30(3):201,204-
Objective To observe the effects of different doses of Yinxingdamo injection on changes of nerve-specific enolase (NSE) of patients with medium-sized brain injury and discusse the mechanism of Yinxingdamo injection in the treatment of brain injury. Methods The contents of serum NSE in 33 cases of craniocerebral injury were dectected by ELISA test and the results were analyzed. Results NSE levels in patients with brain injury were significantly higher than normal people (p <0.05). Yinxingdamo injection can reduce the content of NSE for brain injury patients. This reduction related with the dosage of the medicine, showing the higher the dosage is used, the greater reduction may be.Conclusion Yinxingdamo injection can reduce NSE in serum of patients with brain injury, and this may be the mechanism of Yinxingdamo injection in treating craniocerebral injury.

ObjectiveTo understand the clinical characteristics and therapy of Huntington's disease (HD).MethodsThe clinical characteristics of five typical kindreds with HD were analysed. The therapeutic progression after reviewing literature was summarized.ResultsFive kindreds inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. They were all adult-onset HD.Progressive motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, emotional and behavioral disturbance were the key clinical presentations. At an early stage, manifestations include subtle emotional symptoms and involuntary movements. The reason of visiting doctor was chorea. CT scans demonstrated brain atrophy.ConclusionsTypical clinical manifestation and clear family history may be enough to make primary diagnosis. Psychological evaluation at risk individual may help to diagnose early. Gene testing may confirm the diagnosis of HD. The drugs and occupational, physical therapy and psychotherapy for HD patients can help maintain the highest level of function and improve the quality of life.

Journal of Integrative Medicine 2006;4(2):175-80
OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of Yiqi Huayu Recipe on neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) in neuromuscular junctions during nerve regeneration in rats with lumbar nerve root compression. METHODS: The rats with lumbar nerve root compression were given Yiqi Huayu Recipe for 10, 20 and 30 days respectively. The distribution of N-CAM in neuromuscular junctions of soleus muscle in rats was examined with immunohistochemical method and confocal laser scanning microscopy technique. The acetylcholine receptor (AChR) was visualized with fluorescein-conjugated alpha-bungarotoxin (alpha-BTX). The overlap areas of N-CAM and AChR sites were measured with NIH image technique. RESULTS: The aggregates, sprouts and extensions of N-CAM in the neuromuscular junctions and the overlap areas of N-CAM and AChR sites in the Yiqi Huayu Recipe-treated group were all better improved than those in the untreated group. CONCLUSION: The expression of N-CAM is regulated according to the state of innervation for muscles. Yiqi Huayu Recipe may accelerate this nerve regeneration process.

Objective To observe and compare the antiemetic effectiveness and adverse effects of magnetotherapy plus the 5 -hydroxytryptamine (5-HT3 ) receptor inhibitor granisetron hydrochloride with that of granisetron hydrochloride alone with chemotherapy patients. Methods Sixty-four patients were randomized to receive either granisetron hydrochloride alone ( control group: granisetron hydrochloride 3 mg intravenous infusion before chemotherapy, from the 1st day of chemotherapy until the day after the chemotherapy course was completed) or magnetotherapy plus granisetron hydrochloride ( treatment group: the same granisetron hydrochloride regimen plus rotatory magnetotherapy of 1 h/time every day after chemotherapy). The baseline characteristics of the two groups were similar. The patients' emesia was evaluated according to the WHO's criteria. The density of 5-HT, in serum was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ( ELISA). Results In terms of acute vomiting, there was no significant difference between the two groups, but in terms of tardive vomiting, the effectiveness in the treatment group was significantly better than in the control group. The densities of S-HT, in serum in the treatment and the control group were (225.32±57.29 ) ng/ml vs (213.00±53.29 ) ng/ml before chemotherapy and (273.88±5.42) ng/ml vs ( 313.17±76.36 ) ng/ml after chemotherapy, a significant difference. The rates of adverse events were 36.36% and 48.39% respectively in the treatment group and control group, a difference which was not significant. Conclusions Magnetotherapy plus granisetron hydrochloride is more effective than granisetron hydrochloride alone, and the two therapies have a synergistic effect. Adverse events didn't rise in the treatment group.
