Objective To assess the effectiveness of the clinical pathway for the treatment of advanced schistosomiasis he-patic fibrosis. Methods The duration of hospital stay, gross hospitalization expense,individual-paid expense, interior diame-ter of portal vein, levels of four serum hepatic fibrosis-related parameters(PIIIP,CIV,HA,and LN),and activities of ALT, AST andγ-GT were assessed and compared between the advanced schistosomiasis patients receiving the clinical pathway and ones receiving non-clinical pathway. Results There were 142 advanced schistosomiasis patients with hepatic fibrosis receiving the clinical pathway of anti-hepatic fibrosis. Compared with the patients receiving non-clinical pathway ,the gross hospitalization expenses reduced by 11.2%(t=6.310,P<0.05),and the individual-paid expenses reduced by 16.1%(t=4.326,P<0.05). The mean HA level was twice higher than the normal range, with a positive rising from 70.4%to 83.1%,and the abnormal rates of CIV andγ-GT were 64.1%and 28.9%respectively. Conclusions The clinical pathway can drastically reduce the treatment expenses in advanced schistosomiasis patients with hepatic fibrosis. However, the patients have a trend towards the persistent disease progression. Therefore, the researches of more effective therapeutic methods for advanced schistosomiasis hepatic fibro-sis are urgently needed.

OBJECTIVETo study the relationship between resting heart rate and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) at 3 sites of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) gene including NOS3 -922A/G, NOS3 894G/T and NOS2 -1173C/T SNPs.
METHODSGenomic DNA was gained from 211 Chinese Han nationality population. The SNPs of NOS3 -922A/G, NOS3 894G/T and NOS2 -1173C/T were genotyped by allele-specific primer-polymerase chain reaction (ASP-PCR) technique.
RESULTSThe distribution frequencies of GG, GT and TT genotypes of NOS3 894G/T and AA, AG and GG genotypes of NOS3 -922A/G and CC, CT and TT genotypes of NOS2 -1173C/T were consistent with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P> 0.05). The resting heart rate of Chinese Han nationality population with AA genotypes was higher than that with GG genotype of NOS3 -922A/G (P< 0.01). The resting heart rate of the sub-population with GG genotype was higher than that with TT genotype of NOS3 894G/T (P< 0.05). There were no difference among the resting heart rates of the sub-populations with the allele genotypes of NOS2 -1173C/T.
CONCLUSIONThe resting heart rate of Chinese Han nationality population with mutated genotype GG of NOS3 -922A/G and with mutated genotype TT of NOS3 894G/T were lower than those with wild genotype of NOS3 -922A/G and NOS3 894G/T. The finding suggests that resting heart rate is associated with SNP of NOS3 -922A/G and NOS3 894G/T.

OBJECTIVETo explore the relationship between two exonic polymorphisms of DNA repair gene XPC and the susceptibility to lung cancer.
METHODSGenotypes were determined by the primer introduced restriction analysis-PCR(PIRA-PCR) and the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) approaches, respectively, in 320 histologically-confirmed lung cancer cases and 322 age and sex frequency-matched cancer-free controls.
RESULTSMultivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that individuals carrying at least one 499Val variant allele (Ala/Val + Val/Val genotypes) had a significantly increased risk for lung cancer (adjusted OR=1.54; 95%CI: 1.11-2.14), compared with the wild-type genotype (499Ala/Ala). Furthermore, individuals with both putative risk genotypes had a significantly higher risk (adjusted OR=2.55; 95%CI: 1.45-4.52), compared with those with both wild-genotypes. In addition, a potential super multiplicative gene-environment interaction between Ala499Val genotypes and smoking on lung cancer risk was unveiled. The odds ratios of lung cancer for individuals with both putative risk genotypes were 2.63 (95%CI=1.23-5.62) in nonsmokers and 7.36 (95%CI=3.19-17.0) in smokers, respectively.
CONCLUSIONThese findings support the hypothesis that these two XPC variants may contribute to the risk of developing lung cancer.

OBJECTIVETo explore the damages of paraquat to the learning and memory ability of developing mice and explore the possible mechanism involving oxidative stress.
METHODSEighty healthy Kunming mice in aged 21 days were divided into 4 groups randomly: a control group (distilled water) and three paraquat treatment groups. The doses of paraquat were 0.89, 2.67 and 8mg/kg body weight, respectively. Paraquat was administered orally in doses of 0.1 ml/10 g body weight, respectively, once a day and for 28 consecutive days. The Morris water maze test and the shuttling and avoid dark box test were used to detect the learning and memory abilities of mice. The levels of MDA and the activities of SOD and GSH-PX were detected according to the commercial kits manual using a microplate reader.
RESULTSMorris water maze test showed that the escape latency of mice after paraquat treatment (57.98 +/- 2.78, 62.35 +/- 3.18, 85.57 +/- 5.10) were significantly increase compared with the control (21.74 +/- 1.36), respectively (P < 0.05). There were good dose-response relationship (R = 0.8629, P < 0.05). The shuttling and avoid dark box test showed that initiative avoidance latency of mice after paraquat treatment (5.56 +/- 0.29, 6.08 +/- 0.22, 8.32 +/- 0.38) were significantly increase compared with the control (3.50 +/- 0.13), respectively (P < 0.05). There were good dose-response relationship (R = 0.9579, P < 0.05). The levels of MDA in serum of mice in paraquat treatment groups (2.67 and 8 mg/kg) (24.76 +/- 1.76, 31.10 +/- 4.57) and in hippocampus of mice in each paraquat treatment groups were significantly increase compared with the control (serum: 16.38 +/- 6.26, hippocampus: 1.93 +/- 0.39) (P < 0.05, respectively). The activities of SOD in serum and hippocampus of mice in each paraquat treatment groups were significantly decrease compared with the control (serum: 213.25 +/- 6.78, hippocampus: 197.36 +/- 6.37) (P < 0.05, respectively). The activities of GSH-PX in serum and hippocampus of mice in each paraquat treatment groups were significantly decrease compared with the control (serum: 583.47 +/- 11.23, hippocampus: 412.38 +/- 13.16) (P < 0.05, respectively).
CONCLUSIONParaquat can induce the oxidative damage in hippocampus, and then influence the learning and memory abilities of developing mice.

Chinese Medical Journal 2013;126(5):895-898
BACKGROUNDEvaluation of the severity of the pregnant women with suitable admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is very important for obstetricians. By now there are no criteria for critically ill obstetric patients admitted to the ICU. In this article, we investigated the admission criteria of critically ill patients admitted to the ICU in order to provide a referral basis of reasonable use of the ICU.
METHODSA retrospective analysis of critically ill pregnant women admitted to the ICU in Perking University Third Hospital in China in the last 6 years (from January 2006 to December 2011) was performed, using acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE-II), Marshall and WHO near miss criteria to assess the severity of illness of patients.
RESULTSThere were 101 critically ill pregnant patients admitted to the ICU. Among them, 25.7% women were complicated with internal or surgical diseases, and 23.8% women were patients of postpartum hemorrhage and 23.8% women were patients of pregnancy-induced hypertension. Sixty-nine cases (68.3%) were administrated with adjunct respiration with a respirator. Sixteen cases (15.8%) required 1-2 types of vasoactive drugs. Fifty-five cases (54.5%) required a hemodynamic monitoring. Seventy-three cases (72.3%) had multiple organ dysfunctions (MODS). The average duration in ICU was (7.5 ± 3.0) days. A total of 12.9%, 23.8% and 74.3% of women were diagnosed as critically ill according to the APACHE-II, Marshall and WHO near miss criteria, respectively. The rate was significantly different according to the three criteria (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONSThe WHO near miss criteria can correctly reflect the severity of illness of pregnant women, and the WHO near miss criteria are appropriate for admission of critically ill pregnant women to ICU in China.

OBJECTIVETo observe the correlation between the decline of cognitive function and the level of plasma homocysteine in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD).
METHODSThirty six AD patients were selected from hospitals in Tianjin. The enrolled patients were in accord with the diagnosis criteria. Thirty two control subjects were corresponding patients without AD in the period. Blood samples were extracted from each subject to determine the levels of homocysteine (Hcy) and folate. Cognitive status was evaluated by the mini- mental state examination (MMSE) and clinical dementia rating scale (CDR).
RESULTSThe mean value of serum Hcy concentration [(17.51 +/- 5.62) micromol/L] of AD group was higher than that of control group [(12.38 +/- 4.25)micromol/L]. The serum [(5.17 +/- 1.76) microg/L] and diet folate [(206.94 +/- 44.51) microg/d] concentration of AD group were lower than those of control group [(7.92 +/- 2.22) microg/L, (259.74 +/- 41.92) microg/ d]. The incidence of hyperhomocysteinemia in AD group (64%) was higher than that in control group (22%). A significant relation between Hcy concentrations and the CDR was observed. With the increase of Hcy concentrations the CDR raised, and with the increase of Hcy concentrations the MMSE decreased.
CONCLUSIONHyperhomocysteinemia is one of the risk factors inducing the onset of AD. There is a significant negative correlation between Hcy levels and cognitive levels in AD group. Folate deficiency is an important reason to cause elevated Hcy levels in AD.
