1.Strain and Suicide:an Analysis of 155 Suicide Cases
Chinese Mental Health Journal 2009;23(11):784-789
Objective:To explore the strain experiences by suicides and to test the strain theory of suicide. Methods:A consecutive sample of 155 suicides(91 males and 64 females)aged from 15 to 34 years was studied with the psychological autopsy method.Informants consisted of family members and close friends of the suicides.Suicide stories were composed based on the background information of the suicides and what happened at the suicide site and then content-analyzed and rated by independent judges. Results:All of the victims had experienced at least one type of strain before suicide took place. The sequence of the 4 types of strains beginning with the most frequent one was coping strain,100%;aspiration strain,81%,deprivation strain,72% and value strain,45%.Generally,males experienced more coping strains, especially loss of money or investment than females [(8.85±3.64)vs.(7.72±3.77),(0.35±0.92)vs.(0.09±0.52);Ps<0.05],except for the traditionalism and modernity for status of women, religion and atheism [(0.08±0.37)vs.(0.53±0.97),(0.00±0.00)vs.(0.06±0.30);Ps<0.05].As age increased, value strain tended to increase(r= 0.16,P=0.048),whereas aspiration strain tended to decrease(r= -0.30,P<0.001).Conclusion:With the prevalence of dissonant stresses among suicide victims,it is suggested that crisis intervention and suicide prevention should begin with strain reduction through psychological counseling and therapy.

Objective To investigate the correlations of plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) levels in elderly patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and to evaluate the clinical value. Methods A total of 124 elderly patients diagnosed as chronic heart failure were recruited.Patients with CHF were divided into the stage Ⅱ group, stage Ⅲ group and stage Ⅳ group according to the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification.35 health subjects were randomly enrolled as the control group. The plasma levels of BNP and CA125 between different groups were compared. The correlations of the plasma BNP and CA125 levels with chronic heart failure were analyzed.60 cases with clinical improvement by aggressive treatment were followed up and the plasma levels of CA125 and BNP in them were tested. The changes in heart failure indicators were analyzed before and after treatment. Results The plasma BNP and CA125 levels were higher in patients with CHF than in control subjects (all P<0.01).The plasma BNP and CA125 levels were gradually increased in the stage Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ group (all P<0.01).The plasma levels of BNP and CA125 were negatively correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction and positively correlated with left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (r=-0.75,-0.73,0.72,0.63,respectively,both P<0.01).There were no significant differences in the plasma levels of BNP and CA125 between patients with or without atrial fibrillation (both P >0.05).Conclusions Plasma BNP and CA125 levels are correlated with NYHA classification in CHF,which can be used as indexes for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of CHF.

Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2009;7(2):110-112
Objective:To observe the clinical effect of tuina plus traction for cervical distortion in teenagers. Methods:Tuina plus traction was applied to 40 teenagers with cervical distortion once every other day,and 10 days make up 1 treatment course. The therapeutic effect was evaluated after 2 courses.Result:Significant changes occurred after the treatment:15 cases got correction,20 cases got substantial improvement and 5 cases got certain improvement. Conclusion:Tuina plus traction works effectively for abnormal cervical physiological curve in teenagers.

Objective To study the relationship between Xsp Ⅰ restriction fregment length polymorphism (RFLP) in exon 4 of low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene and hypercholesterolemia. Methods PCR-RFLP method was applied to determine the polymorphism of LDLR gene in 446 cases of hypercholesterolemia, 284 of borderline hypercholesterolemia and 187 normal control subjects. Results Three genotypes, X+X+, X+X- and X-X-, were found in the population. (1) The frequencies of the X+X+ genotype and X+ allele in the group with hypercholesterolemia were higher than those of the other 2 groups (P<0.05). (2) From X-X- to X+X+ genotype, cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol increased gradually, while high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol decreased (all P < 0.05). (3) With logistic regression analysis, LDLR genotype was associated with hypercholesterolemia. Conclusion Polymorphism in Xsp I restriction site at the exon 4 of LDLR (X+ X+ genotype and X+ allele) may be a risk factor of hypercholesterolemia in Chinese population.

Objective To evaluate the effect of dexmedetomidine on myocardial injury induced by renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Methods Twenty-four male Wistar rats, weighing 280-300 g,were randomly divided into 3 groups (n =8 each):sham operation group (group S),group I/R and dexmedetomidine group (group Dex).Renal ischemia was induced by occlusion of bilateral renal arteries for 45 min followed by reperfusion in I/R and Dex groups. At 20 min before ischemia, dexmedetomidine 50 μg/kg was injected intraperitoneally in group Dex,and the rest procedures were similar to those previously described in group I/R.The rats were sacrificed at 24 h of reperfusion and myocardial specimens were obtained for determination of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The apoptosis in cardiomyocytes was examined by flow cytometry.Apoptosis index was calculated. The expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was detected by immunohistochemistry, and Bcl-2/Bax ratio was calculated. Results Compared with group S,apoptosis index and MDA content were significantly increased in I/R and Dex groups,Bcl-2/Bax ratio was decreased in group I/R,and Bcl-2/Bax ratio was increased in group Dex.Compared with group I/R,apoptosis index and MDA content were significantly decreased, and SOD activity and Bcl-2/Bax ratio were increased in group Dex.Conclusion Dexmedetomidine can attenuate myocardial injury induced by renal I/R in rats, and the mechanism may be related to inhibited apoptosis in cardiomyocytes and reduced lipid peroxidation.

Journal of China Pharmaceutical University 2010;41(1):20-25
Aim: To synthesize the ent-kaurene diterpenoid and its derivatives from natural available stevioside. Methods: The crucial pharmacophore of exo-methylene ketone was designed and the carboxyl group at C-4 was modified. The cytotoxic inhibition activities in vitro of target compounds were evaluated against human cancer cells BEL-7402,HO-8910,MCF-7 and HL-60 by a MTT method. Results and Conclusion: The struc-tures of new target compounds were identified by ~1H NMR,FT-IR and EI-MS.The preliminary experimental re-sults showed that some derivatives of ent-kaurene diterpenoid possessed fair inhibitory activity against tumor cell lines compared with that of their parent steviol.
