OBJECTIVETo explore the damage of respiratory system in the traffic policemen induced by automobile tyre colloidal particle and its allergenicity.
METHODSThe respiratory system symptoms in 445 traffic policemen working outside their offices and 243 controls were investigated and their pulmonary ventilation function index such as FVC, FEV(1.0), MMF and V(50) were determined. The specific IgE antibody of automobile tyre colloidal particle of their serum was determined and the skin-prick test of automobile tyre colloidal particle antigen was performed. Sixty-six traffic policemen working outside their offices and 5 controls with the positive of IgE antibody among them were detected by nasal mucosa provocation test. Sixty-six traffic policemen working outside their offices with the positive of IgE antibody were determined by Terbutaline inhalation test.
RESULTSThe positive rate of respiratory system symptoms of traffic policemen such as cough, stethocatharsis, short breath, nasal obstruction, sneeze and nose running was 38.02%, 27.03%, 20.00%, 23.08%, 27.47%, 32.09% and 34.95% respectively and significantly higher than those of the control with significant difference (P < 0.01) or (P < 0.05). The positive rate of specific IgE antibody of automobile tyre colloidal particle, skin- prick test and nasal mucosa provocation test was 14.51%, 23.73% and 54.55% respectively with significant difference (P < 0.01) and (P < 0.05). The percentage, the actual figure compared with the prediction figure, of the index of pulmonary ventilation function (FVC, FEV(1.0) MMF and V(50)) of traffic policemen were significantly lower than those of the control. Terbutaline inhalation test in 66 positive subjects of specific IgE antibody of automobile tyre colloidal particle was positive in 44 subjects, accounting for 9.67% in all policemen investigated.
CONCLUSIONThe automobile tyre colloidal particle is one of etiological factors that induce pulmonary ventilation function damage and could result in allergic asthma of traffic police.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the feasibility of utilizing self-designed score system for lower lumbar vertebral burst fractures to select surgical approach.
METHODSFrom January 2006 to December 2011, the clinical data of 56 patients with lower lumbar vertebra burst fractures who underwent surgical treatment were retrospectively analyzed. There were 42 males and 14 females with an average age of 43.1 years old (ranged, 19 to 65). Causes of injury included falling down (40 cases), traffic accidents (12 cases), and crashing injury by heavy objects(4 cases). Injury site was L3 in 37 cases, L4 in 16 cases, and L5 in 3 cases. According to the AO classification, 17 cases were type A3.1, 14 cases were type A3.2, 25 cases were type A3.3. According to Frankel grade of nerous function, 2 cases were grade B, 5 cases were grade C, 9 cases were grade D and 40 cases were grade E. Surgical methods and approaches were chosen based on the comprehensive evaluation of AO classification, condition of posterior column injury and spinal canal encroachment. Surgical methods and approaches included trans-vertebra fixation (15 cases), intra-vertebra pedicle screw fixation (21 cases), combination of anterior and posterior approaches (11 cases), one-stage posterior approaches (9 cases). Cobb angles, restorations of the affected vertebral anterior border height, and conditions of spinal canal encroachment were compared before and after surgery. Conditions of bone graft fusion and internal fixation (if bending, loosening or breakage existed) were observed. Spinal cord functions were assessed according to Frankel grade. Localized pain and working status of patients were also assessed at the last follow-up.
RESULTSNo incision infection was found and no spinal nerve symptoms improved in all of 56 patients. All patients were followed up for 12 to 60 months with a mean of 28.5 months, without internal fixation loosening or breakage. There was significant differences in Cobb angle, vertebral anterior border height and recovery of spinal canal encroachment between preoperative and postoperative instantly (P < 0.05), however, there was no significant difference between postoperative instantly and final follow-up (P > 0.05). Thirteen cases obtained fusion by trans-vertebra fixation, 20 cases obtained fusion by intra-vertebra fixation, and 20 cases were treated by the combination of anterior and posterior approaches or one-stage posterior approaches all of patients obtained fusion. Spinal nervous function recovered I to II grade, 1 case was grade C, 3 cases were grade D, 52 cases were grade E. Localized pain was assessed as P1 in 52 cases, P2 in 3 cases, and P3 in 1 case. Working status was classified into W1 in 12 cases, W2 in 39 cases, and W3 in 5 cases.
CONCLUSIONThe lower lumbar vertebra and thoracolumbar junction exhibit different injury characteristics due to variations in anatomy and biomechanics. A comprehensive score of the AO classification, posterior column injury and degree of spinal canal encroachment will guide the selection of surgical method and approach for the treatment of lower lumbar vertebra burst fractures.

Metastasis is one of the leading cause of death in patients with colorectal cancer.MicroRNA ( miRNA) can regulate epithelial-mesen-chymal transition, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes and tumor metasta-sis related genes, and combine target gene mRNA by binding to comple-mentary sites to regulate the expression of target genes in post-transcrip-tional, thus regulate the tumor occurrence and development. In recent years, more and more studies show that miRNAs play important roles in the metastasis of colorectal cancer, which is expected to become a new target for the treatment of colorectal cancer.

AIMTo examine the impact and prognostic significance of alpha-tocopherol associated protein (TAP) expression in a series of prostate cancer patients.
METHODSTissues from 87 patients underwent radical prostatectomy were examined for TAP expression by immunohistochemistry. The relationships of the staining results, the clinic pathological characteristics and the recurrence times were analyzed.
RESULTSCompared with the adjacent areas of normal and benign glands, immunoreactivity of TAP was reduced in areas of prostate cancer. A lower TAP-positive cell number per mm(2) of the largest cancer area (defined as TAP-PN) was associated with higher clinical stage (r = -0.248, P = 0.0322). Inverse associations were found among the TAP-PN and positive lymph nodes (r = -0.231, P = 0.0325), preoperative prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels (r = -0.423, P = 0.0043), tumor size (r= -0.315, P= 0.0210) and elevated tumor cell proliferation, which was indicated by the staining of Ki-67 (r = -0.308, P = 0.0026). TAP-PN was a significant predictor of recurrence univariately (P = 0.0006), as well as multivariately, adjusted for known markers including preoperative PSA, clinical stage, Gleason score, surgical margin, extra-prostatic extension, seminal vesicle invasion and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.0012).
CONCLUSIONReduced expression of TAP was associated with the cell proliferation status of prostate cancer, adverse pathological parameters and the increased risk of recurrence.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Postoperative tissue adherence, scarring and radiotherapy often lead to extrinsic compression and stricture in the distal ureter of the patients who had history of pelvic malignancies. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endourologic techniques in treating this kind of ureteral obstruction. METHODS: From Jan. 1998 to Mar. 2007, 46 patients with obstruction in the distal ureter and had history of pelvic malignancies underwent endoscopic treatments at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University for relief of the obstruction. Perioperative and follow-up data were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 46 patients, 25 underwent laparoscopic ureterolysis and ureteroneocystostomy, 18 underwent placement of ureter stent under ureteroscope, 3 underwent percutaneous nephrostomy. No severe complication was recorded. The mean operating time was 82.5 min (range, 30-140 min). The mean blood loss was 45.5 ml (range, 5-180 ml). No blood transfusion was needed. The median follow-up time was 18.2 months (range, 3 months to 6.5 years). Three months after operation, B-ultrasonography and intravenous urography (IVU) showed that 39 (84.8%) patients had recovered normal renal function, the other 7 (15.2%) had hydronephrosis relief and renal function improvement. Nuclear renal scanning showed that the mean postoperative glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in the obstructive kidney was higher than the preoperative level (37.6 ml/min vs. 21.3 ml/min, P<0.05). No stricture in the uretero-bladder anastomotic stoma was recorded. CONCLUSION: Endoscopic operation is an effective and feasible option for managing some selected kinds of distal ureteral obstruction caused by postoperative tissue adherence and radiotherapy in the patients with history of pelvic malignancies.

Aim To investigate the effect of kudinoside D(KD-D)on palmitic acid(PA)-induced lipid depo-sition in hepatocytes. Methods Mouse hepatocytes AML-12 were cultured and randomly divided into the Control group,PA group,PA+KD-D 20 μmol·L-1 group,PA+KD-D 40 μmol·L-1 group and PA+KD-D 80 μmol·L-1 group.AML-12 cells in PA and KD-D groups were treated with PA(0.4 mmol·L-1)for 24 h.AML-12 cells in KD-D groups were incubated with KD-D for 1 h before stimulation with PA.MTT as-say was used to detect cell survival rate, oil red O stai-ning and transmission electron microscopy were used to detect lipid deposition in cells,DCFH-DA fluorescence probe was used to detect intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS)and MitoSOX mitochondrial superoxide red fluorescence probe was used to detect mitochondrial superoxide content in cells. Results KD-D at differ-ent concentrations improved PA-induced changes in cell morphology significantly.Compared with the Con-trol group, cells in PA group showed a significant in-crease in intracellular lipid droplets.Compared with PA group, the red lipid droplets in KD-D groups de-creased.The results of transmission electron microsco-py demonstrated that KD-D reduced PA-induced hepat-ic steatosis and improved ultrastructure. In addition,KD-D significantly decreased PA-induced cellular ROS level(P<0.01)and reduced mitochondrial superox-ide content(P<0.01).Conclusion KD-D inhibits PA-induced lipid deposition by regulating the cellular oxidative stress levels in AML-12 cells.
