Objective To evaluate the relationship between apoE gene polymorphisms and gallstone. Methods We included all the published studies on the association between apoE gene polymorphisms and gall-stone. A meta-analysis was employed to summarize all these studies, calculate the pooled OR and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) , and test the overall effects. The Egger's publication bias analysis and sensitivity analysis were carried out to evaluate the reliability and stability of the meta-analysis. Results Eleven association studies between the apoE gene polymorphisms and gallstone fulfilled our inclusion criteria. There were 1248 patients with gallstones and 1660 controls. Remarkable heterogeneities were discovered in the allele ε4 and genotype E3/E4 of apoE between gallstone and control subjects in these studies (P<0. 05). Their ORs and 95%CIs were 1.32 (1.01, 1. 71), 1. 60 (1. 04, 2. 46), respectively (P<0. 05). The results of sensitivity analysis and publication bias analysis showed the reliability and stability of this meta-analysis. Conclusion apoE gene polymorphisms are associated with gallstone. Those with the alleleε4 or genotype E3 /E4 had a higher risk of suffering from gallstone.

Objective To study the effects of diet and physical activity factors on blood pressure in nine provinces, using the multilevel model. Methods Data was collected in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). A total of 6706 men and 7140 women aged above 18 who attended at least one of the surveys in the year of 1997,2000,2004 and 2006 were selected, and a two-level male and female random intercept-slope growth models were applied to estimate the relationship between the intake of daily salt, vegetable, fruit, fat, protein as well as the time spent on the moderate or heavy physical activity and blood pressure. Results After controlling for age, education, BMI, drinks and total energy intake, mean of the daily salt intake per person was positively associated with systolic blood pressure in women ( β= 0.0481, s-x= 0.0178, P<0.01 ). Mean of the daily vegetable intake per person was negatively associated with systolic blood pressure in men and women, with the regression coefficients as -0.0063,-0.0068 respectively, indicating that if mean of the daily vegetable intake per person increased by 100 g, the systolic blood pressure would decrease by 0.6 mm Hg (1 mm Hg=0.133 kPa) or more. In addition, the daily vegetable intake was also negatively associated with diastolic blood pressure (P<0.01). Daily fruit intake was negatively associated with systolic blood pressure both in men and women, with regression coefficients as -0.0029 and -0.0031 respectively. Time spent on the moderate or heavy physical activity was also negatively associated with systolic blood pressure in both men and women, and diastolic blood pressure in women (P<0.05). No relationship was found between daily fat, protein intake and blood pressure. Conclusion Daily salt, vegetable, fruit intake, time spent on the moderate or heavy physical activity were associated with blood pressure in both men and women. Programs on integrated lifestyle modifications including dietary salt reduction, eating more vegetable and fruits, increasing physical activity level, plus weight control were critical for the control of high blood pressure.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is associated with poor outcome in trauma patients; however, hemorrhagic shock (HS) model with anesthetized swine was different from that of clinical reality. To identify the effects of environmental hypothermia on HS, we investigated hemodynamics and oxygen dynamics in an unanesthetized swine model of HS under simulating hypothermia environment.METHODS: Totally 16 Bama pigs were randomly divided into ambient temperature group (group A) and low temperature group (group B), 8 pigs in each group. Venous blood (30 mL/kg) was continuously withdrawn for more than 15 minutes in conscious swine to establish a hemorrhagic shock model. Pulmonary arterial temperature (Tp), heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP), pulmonary arterial wedge pressure (PAWP), central venous pressure (CVP), cardiac output (CO), hemoglobin (Hb), saturation of mixed venous blood (SvO2) and blood gas analysis were recorded at the baseline and different hemorrhagic shock time (HST). The whole body oxygen delivery indices, DO2I and VO2I, and the O2 extraction ratio (O2ER) were calculated.RESULTS: Core body temperature in group A decreased slightly after the hemorrhagic shock model was established, and environmental hypothermia decreased in core body temperature. The mortality rate was significantly higher in group B (50%) than in group A (0%). DO2I and VO2I decreased significantly after hemorrhage. No difference was found in hemodynamics, DO2I and VO2I between group A and group B, but the difference in pH, lactic acid and O2ER was significant between the two groups.CONCLUSION: Environmental hypothermia aggravated the disorder of oxygen metabolism after hemorrhagic shock, which was associated with poor prognosis.

OBJECTIVETo assess the early clinical diagnosis and treatment of mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT).
METHODSClinical data of 23 cases with MVT from January 1994 to December 2003 were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTSThere were 17 males and 6 females, the age ranged from 19 to 74 years old with a mean age of 42 years. Of them, 20 patients presented acute MVT. The main symptoms included abdominal pain and distention, nausea, vomiting, and bloody stool. The detect able rates of transabdominal color Doppler ultrasonography and CT for MVT were 94.1% and 100% respectively. Nine of 11 (81.8%) patients were cured with non-surgical management. Twelve patients underwent surgical treatments including resection of the infarcted bowel and open mesenteric venous thrombectomy with Fogarty catheter via a branch of mesenteric vein. The in-hospital mortality rate was 8.7%, and the postoperative morbidity rate was 33.3%, including ascites in 2 patients and postprandial abdominal pain in other 2 patients. After follow-up from 2 months to nine years, 3 patients had MVT recurrence because of ceasing anti-coagulation treatment and 3 died of myocardial infarction, liver cancer and hepatic cirrhosis.
CONCLUSIONColor Doppler ultrasonography and CT scanning are valuable diagnostic methods for MVT, and anticoagulation treatment and operation are effective managements.
