AIM: To evaluate the effects of total flavonoid of chrysanthemum on the expressions of Fas and FasL in male rabbits with dry eye, and to investigate the therapeutic effects of the total flavonoid of chrysanthemum on dry eye.
METHODS: Totally 150 male Japanses white rabbits were divided into blank group ( group A ) , sham -operated group ( group B ) , model group ( group C ) , androgen control treatment group (group D), and total flavonoid of chrysanthemum treatment group ( group E ) . The dry eye model was established with orchiectomy on group C, D and E. Rabbits in group E were treated with total flavonoid of chrysanthemum. Rabbits in group D were treated with androgen intramuscular injection. Rabbits in the group A, group B, group C was treated with normal saline. All rabbits were detected with Schirmer's Ⅰ test and tear break-up time (BUT). Fas, FasL were checked on immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS:The Schirmer's I test values of group E was significantly higher than that of group C ( P<0. 01 ) and the BUT value of group E was significantly longer than that of group C ( P<0. 01 ). The quantity of positive expression of Fas in glandular tube cell and acinar epithelial celland apoptosis cells of group E after treatment at 1, 3, 5mo were significantly lower than that of group C, cell population of the positive expression of FasL was obviously higher than that of group C (P<0. 01).
CONCLUSION:The main component of chrysanthemum is flavonoid, which could significantly inhibit happening of dry eye in rabbit after androgen level lowered and lacrimal gland apoptosis and keep basic tears secretory volume and tear film stability.

OBJECTIVETo investigate moisture content and hygroscopicity of spray dry powder of Gubi compound's water extract obtained at different spray drying conditions and laying a foundation for spray drying process of Chinese herbal compound preparation.
METHODIn the paper, on the basis of single-factor experiments, the author choose inlet temperature, liquid density, feed rate, air flow rate as investigated factors.
RESULTThe experimental absorption rate-time curve and scanning electron microscopy results showed that under different spray drying conditions the spray-dried powders have different morphology and different adsorption process.
CONCLUSIONAt different spray-dried conditions, the morphology and water content of the powder is different, these differences lead to differences in the adsorption process, at the appropriate inlet temperature and feed rate with a higher sample density and lower air flow rate, in the experimental system the optimum conditions is inlet temperature of 150 degrees C, feed density of 1.05 g x mL(-1), feed rate of 20 mL x min(-1) air flow rate of 30 m3 x h(-1).

West China Journal of Stomatology 2008;26(5):486-489
OBJECTIVETo compare the regional load deflection rate (LDR) of multiloop edgewise arch wire (MEAW) of three dimensions with coupled use of two dimension brackets in the individual interbracket span, to understand the mechanical properties of MEAW.
METHODSThe MEAW arch wires of stainless steel of three dimensions, 0.41 mm x 0.56 mm, 0.43 mm x 0.64 mm and 0.46 mm x 0.64 mm, were bent into single L-loop. The study was performed with the coupled use of 0.41 mm x 0.56 mm wires with 0.46 mm x 0.64 mm bracket (A bracket) and 0.43 mm x 0.64 mm, 0.46 mm x 0.64 mm wires with 0.56 mm x 0.71 mm bracket (B bracket). The LDR of each L-loop at the individual interbracket span when loading and unloading was measured. The data were analysed by SPSS 11.0.
RESULTSCompared the regional LDR for the couple of 0.41 mm x 0.56 mm L-loop with A bracket with those for the couple of 0.43 mm x 0.64 mm L-loop with B bracket, the former showed lower value than the latter at regions between the upper central and lateral incisor, the lower central and lateral incisor, and between the lower lateral incisor and canine (P < 0.05). For the rest regions, the two couples exhibited similar value to the regional LDR (P > 0.05). The regional LDR for the couple of 0.41 mm x 0.56 mm L-loop with A bracket were lower at all regions than those for the couple of 0.46 mm x 0.64 mm L-loop with B bracket (P < 0.05) except that at the region between the lower first and second molars which showed similar value between the two couples.
CONCLUSIONThe coupled use of B bracket with 0.43 mm x 0.64 mm MEAW arch wire and A bracket with 0.41 mm x 0.56 mm MEAW arch wire exhibited similar mechanical properties.
