1.Development of a novel liquid injection system.

A liquid jet injector employs compressed gas or spring to produce a high-velocity stream to deliver liquid drug into human body through skin. There are many clinical jet injection products available, none of which is domestic. A new liquid jet injector is designed based on a comprehensive analysis of the current products. The injector consists of an ejector, trigger and a re-positioning mechanism. The jets characteristics of sample injector are tested, and the results show that the maximum exit pressure is above 15 MPa, a threshold value for penetrating into the skin.

2.The evaluation of mechanical performance of a jet injection system.

In this study, the mechanical properties of a self-made jet injector and a foreign product are tested from three aspects: penetration ability, injection completeness and injection dispersion. Correspondingly, three different experiments are designed and performed: dynamic pressure measurement, injection into silicon rubbers with fixed hardness yet different thickness and injection into polyacrylamide gels with fixed hardness. The results show similar mechanical properties between self-made system and the foreign system. The evaluation of the mechanical performance of jet injectors that consists of penetration ability, injection completeness and injection dispersion can describe the jet injection process effectively.

3.Effect of phospholipomannan of Candida albicans on the production of interleukin 6 and interleukin 8 in monocytes.

OBJECTIVETo investigate whether Candida albicans-native phospholipomannan (PLM) induce an inflammation response through Toll-like receptor(TLRé2 in human acute monocytic leukemia cell line (THP-1) cells.
METHODSHuman THP-1 monocytes were challenged with PLM in vitro. The mRNA expressions of TLR2, TLR4, proinflammatory cytokine [interleukin(IL)-6], and chemokine (IL-8) were assayed by real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The secretions of IL-6 and IL-8 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of TLR2 was analyzed with Western blot.
RESULTSPLM increased the mRNA expressions and secretions of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6) and chemokines (IL-8) in THP-1 cells (all P=0.0000). PLM up-regulated the mRNA and protein levels of TLR2 (P=0.0000), whereas the mRNA level of TLR4 was not altered. PLM hydrolyzed with β-D-mannoside manno hydrolase failed to induce gene and protein expressions of TLR2, IL-6, and IL-8. Anti-TLRS-neutralizing antibody blocked the PLM-induced secretions of IL-6 and IL-8 in THP-1 cells (P = 0.0003, P = 0.0010).
CONCLUSIONCanidada albicans-native PLM may contribute to the inflammatory responses during Candida infection in a TLR2-dependent manner.

4.Comparison study of three methods for the treatment of microgenia.

OBJECTIVETo analyze the clinical results and complications of three methods for microgenia, including chin augmentation with silicone implant, bone autograft, and genioplasty.
METHODSThe advantages and disadvantages of the three methods for microgenia were assessed through 3-D CT reconstruction, X-ray and intraoperative observation during the second operation. The indications for each technique were also studied.
RESULTSThe frequently observed problems for chin augmentation with silicone implants were implant malposition, underlying bone absorption, periosteal reaction and undercorrection. Chin augmentation with bone autograft had a great long-term bone graft absorption which led to undercorrection. Genioplasty showed a satisfactory cosmetic result with no serious complication.
CONCLUSIONSChin augmentation with silicone implant is suitable for mild microgenia with a shallow mentolabial groove, but without facial vertical insufficient and facial asymmetry. Genioplasty can be used in all kinds of microgenia in any severity, especially those with deviated chin and facial asymmetry. Chin augmentation with bone autograft can't achieve good long-term result and should be applied prudently.

5.Application of FTIR spectroscopy to the analysis of eleven kinds of Dendrobium.

OBJECTIVETo establish an FTIR method for the analysis of Dendrobium.
METHODUsing fourier transform infrared spectrometer to record the characteristic spectra of eleven samples of Dendrobium, and to compare the spectra by PCA (principal component analysis).
RESULTThe FTIR spectra of the upper part of the stem displayed significant differences between fresh and dried samples of Dendrobium. On the other hand, differences were observed in the spectra of the middle and lower parts of stems of D. guangxieuse when compared to other species.
CONCLUSIONThe method of applying PCA to FTIR analysis is a rapid and dependable method for comparing samples of Dendrobium.

6.Evaluation of living donor liver transplantation for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the donor risks and potential recipient benefits of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for adult patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
METHODSFrom January 2002 to December 2006, a total of 27 LDLT for HCC patients were performed in our center, of which 25 received right lobe grafts and 2 received dual grafts. The clinical and follow-up data of these 27 recipients and 29 donors were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTSOf the 29 donors, the overall complication rate was 17.24% (5 cases). Two cases (6.90%) experienced major complications (one with intra-abdominal bleeding and one with portal vein thrombosis) and three cases (10.34%) experienced minor ones (fat necrosis and infection of the surgical skin wound in one, pleural effusion in another and transient chyle leakage in the third). All donors were fully recovered and returned to their previous work. No recipients developed small-for-size syndrome. The overall HCC patients survival rate at 1- and 3-years was 84.01% and 71.40%, respectively, similar to that of patients undergoing LDLT for various nonmalignant diseases during the same period (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONAlthough further study is needed to fully assess the risks and benefits of LDLT for the HCC patients and donors, our present results preliminarily suggest that LDLT offers an acceptable chance and duration of survival in patients with HCC, and it is a relatively safe procedure.

7.Etiological characteristics of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus in Beijing

Objective To analyze the results of detection on influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus in Beijing from May 2009 to December 2009 and to understand the epidemiologic characteristics during the pandemic period. Methods The study was conducted from the May 1 to December 27,2009. A total of 101 852 throat swab samples were detected with the real-time RT-PCR assay by the Beijing Network Laboratory. Data was statistically analyzed. Results 9843 samples showed influenza A (H1N1) 2009 positive, with an overall positive rate as 9.66%. In terms of the positive rates, they were 2.85% from May to June, 3.32% from July to August and 8.35% from September to October. The peak month fell in November (29.67%) and December (24.33%). The positive rates among the following subpopulations were: 8.40% among the suspected cases, 4.75% among close contact cases, 11.46% among the influenza-like illness cases and 7.33% among the cluster cases with fever. Positive cases mainly fell in age groups 5-14 and 15-24. The ratio of male to female was 1.5:1.Conclusion During the pandemic period of influenza A (H1N1) 2009, positive cases gradually increased during May to November but slowly decreasing in December.
