2.Variations of Insertions of the Abductor Pollicis Longus and the Extensor Pollicis Brevis in Korean

The purpose of this study was the presence of accessory tendon and its anatomical variation of insertion of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis. 1. Among 46 cases, all had one or more accessory tendon except one which inserted into the base of the first metacarpal bone on its anterolateral surface with a single tendon. 2. Among 45 cases (which had one or more accessory tendon), the abductor pollicis longus tendon inserted into the trapezium in 30 cases(66.6%), and thenar muscles in 38 cases (84.4%). 3. Among 46 cases, the extensor pollicis brevis tendon inserted into the proximal phalanx in 30 cases(65%) and into the distal phalanx with extensor pollicis longus in 8 cases (18%) and into both in 8 cases (18%). 4. Among 22 cadavers, symmetry of insertion of the abductor pollicis longus noticed in 16 cases (88 and extensor pollicis brevis in 21 cases (95%).

5.Glucose-6-phosphatase Activity and Ultrastructures in Hepatocytes of Thioacetamide-treated Mice.

To investigate the earlier cellular alterations(Glucose-6-Pase activity and morphologic features) caused by a hepatotoxin, thioacetamide (TAA), a single dose of the agent (200mg per kg of body weight) was given intraperitoneally to mice, which were sacrificed at intervals of 4, 8 or 16 hours after corresponding treatments. For histochemical study of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) activity, unfixed frozen sections were incubation of the Wachstein and Meisel medium and stained. The smallest pieces of liver tissue were fixed in glutaraldehyde and osmic acid, and stained by the routine electron-microscopic techniques. Some pieces of liver were fixed in 10% formalin, embedded in paraffin, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. There was a rapid and progressive loss of G6Pase activity, in an orderly time sequence, in the experimental group. There were also morphologic changes: loss of cytoplasmic basophilia, cell infiltration and necrosis in the centrilobular and intermediate zones, and an increase of sER, small vesicles and ribosomes in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes, the marked changes of nuclei and nucleoli, and a slight increase of lipid droplets in the cytoplasm at 16 hours after intoxication. The correlation between these cellular alterations was discussed in view of mechanisms in the hepatotoxic action.

7.Ultrastructural observation of human neutrophils during apoptotic cell death triggered by Entamoeba histolytica.

Neutrophils are important effector cells against protozoan extracellular parasite Entamoeba histolytica, which causes amoebic colitis and liver abscess in human beings. Apoptotic cell death of neutrophils is an important event in the resolution of inflammation and parasite's survival in vivo. This study was undertaken to investigate the ultrastructural aspects of apoptotic cells during neutrophil death triggered by Entamoeba histolytica. Isolated human neutrophils from the peripheral blood were incubated with or without live trophozoites of E. histolytica and examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Neutrophils incubated with E. histolytica were observed to show apoptotic characteristics, such as compaction of the nuclear chromatin and swelling of the nuclear envelop. In contrast, neutrophils incubated in the absence of the amoeba had many protrusions of irregular cell surfaces and heterogenous nuclear chromatin. Therefore, it is suggested that Entamoeba-induced neutrophil apoptosis contribute to prevent unwanted tissue inflammation and damage in the amoeba-invaded lesions in vivo.

Gastric tuberculosis is a rare disease. It usually occurs secondarily to another lesions and mainly in the lungs. Only a few cases of primary gastric tuberculosis have been reported in the literature. Most commonly, gastric tuberculosis lesion locates in the lesser curvature side of the antrum. Therefore the clinical picture is similar to the peptic ulcer. A 24-year-old women visited to the Inha university hospital complaining of vomiting and epigastric discomfort. Gastrofiberscopy showed multiple polypoid mass around the pylorus with stenotic pyloric channel. Subtotal gastrectomy was performed and histologic examination revealed chronic granulomatous inflammation with caseation necrosis. That is compatible with tuberculosis. The patient was taken antituberculosis medication without complication. So we report the case of pyloric obstruction due to gastric tuberculosis with review of the literature.

10.A case of fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter.

Fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter is a extremely rare benign tumor which is mesodermal origin. It should be suspected preoperatively in cases with a long history of loin pain or hematuria, or both, in a younger patient with the radiologic finding of long ureteric filling defect. Unfortunately. in the majority of cases reviewed. the diagnosis was not made preoperatively but the diagnostic confirmation was made intraoperatively or postoperatively. Herein, we report a case of fibroepithelial polyp or the ureter which was diagnosed preoperatively with ureteroscope. The management was local segmental excision and end-to-end anastomosis of the ureter.
