Korean Journal of Pathology 1993;27(4):424-426
Retroperitoneum is often the site of occurrence of schwannoma, but reports on schwanoma of the adrenal gland is exceptional and only 4 cases have been documented in the literature. This report is to add one such case occurred in a 53 year-old male who had anorexia, nausea and indigestion for one month. Whole body bone scan and abdominal CT scan revealed a 10 cm sized solid mass at upper pole of the left kidney. Under the impression of renal cell carcinoma, an operation was performed. The tumor was well encapsulated and appeared not to involve the kidney. The cut surfaces were light yellow and seemed to be composed of several hard lobules with areas of mucoid, cystic and calcific changes. No adrenal gland was identified grossly. But microscopically, the tumor was found to be partly surrounded by a small portion of adrenal cortical tissue. Histologically the tumor was a typical schwannoma with Verocay bodies, although modified in some extents by mucoid degeneration, cystic change, hyaline change and focal calcification. It is worthwhile to remember that the retroperitoneal schwannoma commonly had a huge size, sometimes involving the adjacent structures.

Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 1997;24(3):547-558
Reconstruction of partial ear defect to approximate the opposite normal ear is actually very difficult. Because the patterns of partial ear defect (site, shape and size of defect) are extremely variable, the operative method on each case should be changed. In an effort to overcome these problems, many reconstructive methods have been reported so far. We experienced 11 cases of partial ear defect from September, 1995 to August, 1996 and different reconstructive methods were applied In this study, the most common cause of partial ear defect was trauma (9 cases) and the most common site was middle part of ear helix. The defects were varying from 1x2 cm to 1.5x5 cm in size. The methods that has been used for reconstruction of ear defect include direct closure, helical chondrocutaneous advancement flap, Dieffenbach's method, retroauricular flap, tubed bipedicled flap and so on. We could get to know the merits and demerits of each method through this follow up study. So authors obtained the several basic conclusions about the merits and demerits of each method and standard of method selection in various patterns of ear defects. From analysis of the cases with review of literature, the our conclusions are as follows. 1. If the size of de(tract is small and the patient does not want to have two times of operation, direct closure can be done with good results. 2. If the defect exists on ear auricle confuted to helix and if there are no or small amount of associated cartilage defect, tubued bipedicled flap seems to be proper. 3. With the ear auricle defect confined to helix, especially helix of upper ear auricle, helical chondrocutaneous advancement flap can brought tile best result, though it has disadvantage of being decreased in its size 4. If there are extensive defect on ear auricle extending over scapha and antihelix, retroauricular flap can be done with good results. 5. In the ear auricle defect acompanying considerably large cartilage loss, Dieffenbach's method is thought to be proper.

The conversion of the ankylosed hip to a total hip arthroplasty may be indicated if a fused hip causes low back pain, pain in the ispilateral knee, or a fibrous ankylosis is painful. Fifteen hips converted to total hip arthroplasty between Aug., 1982 and Jul., 1988 have been reviewed one to seven years after operation and the results are as follows:1. Among the 15 hips, 8 cases confirmed as fibrous ankylosis and 7 cases confirmed as bony ankylosis. 2. The causes of ankylosis is as follow tuberculous arthritis(4 cases), secondary osteoarthritis due to pyogenic hip(4 cases), rheumatoid arthritis(4 cases), post-traumatic arthritis secondary to central fracture-dislocation of hip(2 cases), and ankylosing spondylitis(1 cases). 3. The duration of immobility of the involved hip ranged from two to twenty-five years. 4. In the 14 patients, three complained of low back pain, five of ipsilateral knee pain and six of ipsilateral hip pain. 5. The lower back pain due to malposition was relieved in all cases except ankylosing spondylitis, and the pain in ipsilateral knee was also relived in all cases after hip arthroplasty. 6. The average Harris score of the fifteen hips before arthroplasty and after was 50.1 and 88.1.
