1.Mistaken Belief about Mental Illness.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2002;45(11):1355-1362
There have been so many misperceptions and prejudices against mental illness in our society. The wrong perception and prejudice against mental illness infringe on basic human right to receive proper medical care. Thoughts such as 'mental illness is rare', 'it is incurable', or 'psychiatric patients are weird, violent and harmful to others' are typical stereotypes of mistaken beliefs about mental illness. Scientific studies conducted throughout the world provide the opposite of these views. To reduce misunderstanding and stigma of mental illness, it is important to lead the public to recognize the mental illness is a disease of the brain to be treated, and that it can be treated effectively. To achieve this aim, proactive promotion by government and non-government organizations including medical professionals is required. In addition, vigorous scientific investigations should continue to delineate the pathophysiology of mental illness and establish effective treatment thereof.

2.Experimental Induction of Pancreatic Hyperplastic Nodules by Administration of 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline-1-oxide in Rats.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1986;20(2):133-146
Pancreatic hyperplastic nodules were experimentally produced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by single doses of intravenous injection of 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline-1-oxide(4-HAQO), 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 30 mg per 1kg of body weight. Every ten rats were sacrificed after 1 day, 1 week and monthly until 6 months. Within the first week, pancreatic acini and islets were severely affected with necrosis and the adjacent acinar cells underwent vacuolization. But, pancreatic ductules remained relatively unaffected. The degrees of acinar cell degeneration were proportionally increased as with the increased doses of 4-HAQO administration. The levels of blood glucose and serum amylase were closely corresponding to the light microscopic features of the pancreas. Two months after administration of 4-HAQO, the nongranular acinar cells started to proliferate and their proportion of total acinar cells was 35%, whereas that of control group was 15%, after 3 months the proportion of nongranular cells was decreased. After 6 months, multiple hyperplastic nodules were discovered within the pancreatic acini of all 12 rats, and the largest one measured 500 micro in diameter. Each hyperplastic nodule was uniformly composed of larger cells in two folds of normal cells with hyperchromatic muclei and prominent nucleoli together with a few zymogen granules in their cytoplasms. Ultrastructurally, the cells contained abundant dilated endoplasmic reticulum and markedly decreased zymogen granules. Nuclear heterochromatin became finely dispersed with loss of marginal clumping. During the regeneration process, admixture of islet cells with membrance-bounded granules was identified among the clusters of regenerating acinar cells. On the basis of above findings, the induction of hyperplastic nodules in rat pancreas by 4-HAQO was confirmed, and its histogenesis may reflect a nodular hyperplasia of non-granular acinar cells with potential progress as a neoplastic lesion. And the evidence of the hypothesis that the pancreatic exocrine cells and endocrine cells are in same origin, was presented.

3.A Clinical Study of 32 Patients with Sweet' s Syndrome.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1995;33(5):907-913
BACKGROUND: The clinical study of Sweets syndrome has never been reported in Korea. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the clinical observations and associated diseases of Sweets syndrome. METHODS: During a 5-year-period from Jan. 1990 to Dec. 1994, 32 patients were evaluated in regard to age incidence, sex ratio, location of skin lesions, and associated diseases. RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS : 1, The age distribution was in the range of 21-70 years. Most patients were between 31 to 40 years of age. There were 12 male patients and 20 female giving a sex distribution of 1.7: 1 ratio in favor of the fernale. 2. The most cornmon site of iavolvement was the arm(37.5%). 3. ESR was increased in 21 patients(65.6%) and leukocytosis was present in 13 patients(40.6) 4. The most common associated disease was Behcets disease(31.2%). 5. Steroids were used mos frequently for treatment of Sweets syndrome with 12 patients(37.5%). Recurrence occurred in 7 patients(21.9%). The results show that the iniidence of Sweets syndrome in men in Korea is not as rre as was previously thought and tfiat there are many associated diseases especially Behcets disease.

4.Effect of High-Dose Steroid Treatment on Adipogenesis and Secretion of PAI-1 in Rats.
Journal of Korean Orthopaedic Research Society 1999;2(2):117-124
This study was conducted to invetigate the effect of high-dose steroid administration on adipogenesis and secretion of PAI-1 in rat. Sixty healthy Wistar rats were divided into three groups. Group A consisted of 20 control animals received 5 ml/kg isotonic saline for 1 weeks. Group B consisted of 20 animals received 10 ml/kg of methylprednisolone intraperitoeally for 1 week. Group C comprized 20 animals received 10 ml/kg of methylprednisolone intraperitoneally for 1 week. After the completionof treatment, blood sampling was performed for measurenement of PAI-1 and the animale were sacrificed for histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical study. The PAI-1 protein expressin of femoral heads were evaluated with Western-blotting. Blood level of PAI-1 increased significantly in high-dose steroid treated group(Group B and C) compared to control group. In histopathologic examination, significant fat morrow conversion, fat cell hypertrophy and fat cyst formation were observed in high-dose steroid treated group. Immunohistochemically, PAi-1 expression was sprominent in the fat cells. Protein expression of PAI-1 of femoral heads increased significantly in highdose steroid treated group compared to control group. In lights of above results, it is postulated that increased secretion of PAI-1 from fat cells could play a major role in the pathogenesis of osteonecrosis of the femoral head in rats treated with high-dose steroid.

5.How to make illuminating type poster
Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1986;22(5):918-921
Illuminating type poster looks very impressive and one may feel as if it were on the view box in his readingroom. Some difficulties and nuisances really exist in making them and a few of demerits can also be encounteredthat of contrast enhancement and of rough graininess. Contact print renders the best quality, though, KodakTechnical-Pan film with HC-110 (Dil. F) developer, llford xp 1–400 with Kodak C-41 color developer and KodakPlus-X with Microdol-X developer combinations also work in minimizing the deterioration of resolution and grainisswhich can almost always occur in enlargement prints.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1986;22(5):672-682
Pecutaneous transhepatic portogram with selective catheterizatio of the portal vein and its tributaries notonly provide information about the status of portal circulation and but can also be used in the treatment ofbleeding esophageal varices by selective embolization with various embolic materials. The authors describe easierand safer modified method of conventional percutaneous transhepatic portogram. We wish to describe our experiencewith the technical aspects and portosystemic collateral patterns in 26 patients with variceal bleeding, from July1985 to July 1986 at Kyungpook National University Hospital. 1. To overcome the difficulties of catheter passageand superselection of variceal supplying vein, we used 7F sheath directly introduced over the ,018″ guide wire.We used coaxial system using 25cm 18G needle within 7F vessel dilator to make the tip of dilator more rigid. 2.Variceal obliteration attempted in 23 patients who showed variceal supplying veins on the protogram, Successfulobilteration was obtained in 20 patients. We used absolute ethanol, stainless steel coil, and Gelfoam cubes withsclerosing and embolica agent of variceal vein. 3. Portosystemic collaterals of 24 patients; Coronary vein;21cases, Inferior mesenteric vein:9 cases, Short gastric vein:7 cases, Umbilical & paraumbilical vein; 6 cases,Gastrorenal: 3 cases, Splenorenal: 2 cases, Splenoretoperitoneal: 1 case. 4. The number of coronay vein were 18cases of single and 4 cases of two. The locations of coronary vein: Splenic vein: 13 cases, Main portal vein: 7cases, Junctional area: 6 cases. 5. Transhepatic obliteration of the gastroesophageal veins is a relatively simpleand usually successful form of palliative treatment for actively bleeding and stable gastroesophageal varices.

9.An Estimation of Carbamate Pesticide Exposure in a Rural Area: A pilot study using personal sampler and gas chromatography.
Byung Hae KIM ; Yong Sik KIM ; Jin Su CHOI
Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1990;23(2):201-206
The exposures to carbamate pesticides (BPMC specifically) of agricultural workers were estimated by collecting pesticide in air by personal sampler and by analyzing with gas chromatography. Data revealed that the highest BPMC concentration in the aspirated air was 7.7 mg/m3. Concentrations were generally higher in the group whose spray conditions were controlled than the group uncontrolled. Actual concentrations were relatively lower than the values predicted theoretically. These findings suggest that personal sampler be useful in the estimation of pesticide exposure.
