Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1987;28(1):151-155
The authors evaluated the 56 patients who received the diagnosis of myopia at the department of ophthalmology in Koryo General Hospital in Seoul from May 1975 to August 1985. In this study, we reviewed the statistics of the progression of myopia with age and with the number of visits to the hospital and also the differences between male and female and left eye and right eye. The results are as follows: 1. Myopia progresses with increase of age. 2. The mean diopter of myopia over 21 years is not so remarkable compared with below 20 years. But it is not absolutely true because the number of patients are so small. 3. On the average, males are slightly higher in the degree of myopia than female, but this seems to have no statistical meaning. 4. In terms of the degree of myopia, it is higher after the age of 12 than before 12.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1986;27(6):1121-1125
Gliomas of the optic nerve are relatively uncommon. We have experienced one case of glioma of the optic nerve recently. The patient was 17 year old boy who had exophthalmos and visual disturbance in his left eye for three years. The vision was CF/30cm. in his left eye and the optic nerve head was extremely atrophic. The eyeball was displaced infero-temporally. The exophthalmic value was 14mm. in right and 18mm. in left eye. On July 31, 1986, the left eyeball was exposed through Kroenlein method and the tumor mass was excised totally but the eyeball remained intact. The gross appearance of the tumor was large fusiform shape(3.5 X 2.0 X 1.8cm.) with well encapsulated grayish-white surface. The cut-section of the tumor revealed grayish-white solid area and hemorrhagic cystic area. The histopathologic slides showed that the tumor was composed of multiple pilocytic astrocytic cells in the solid area and in microcystic area. The cytoplasm of the tumor cells were bipolar spindle shape and the nucleus was uniform in general and there was no sign of mitotic figure. Numerous dense and amorphous eosinophilic materials so called "Rosenthal fibers" were also seen in the microcystic areas. Finally we have diagnosed this tumor as the Optic nerve glioma.

3.The Evaluation of Fundus Findings of Hypertensive and Arteriosclerotic: Retinopathy Among 4143 Korean Adults(Part II).

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1986;27(5):723-728
The authors evaluated the fundus findings among the 4143 relatively healthy Koreans who visited the Health Clinic Center in Koryo General Hospital in Seoul for the routine physical check-up from June 1983 to June 1984. In this study, we investigated the relationships among the hypertensive arteriosclerotic retinopathies with the systemic blood pressure and serum cholesterol, neutral fat, beta-lipoprotein. The results are: 1. Among the 4143 cases, 2989 males and 1154 females are included, their age distribution was from 10 to 99 years old. 2. Of the 4143 cases, 101 cases had Hypertensive Retinopathy and of these cases K-W Grade I were most common. 3. 139 cases of the 4143 cases had Arteriosclerotic Retinopathy and G-I was most common. 4. The K-W Grades of the Hypertensive Retinopathy were positively related to the sistolic, the diastolic blood pressure. 5. There were no significant relationships between Hypertensive Retinopathy and serum cholesterol level, neutral fat, beta-lipoprotein. 6. In the A-V crossing phenomenon, the incidences of concealment and displacement were positively related to the Grades of the Arteriosclerotic Retinopathy. 7. To compare with the former evaluation(Part I) 5), the following results are obtained: (1) The incidence of hypertensive retinopathy in part I was 8% and 2.43 in part II. (2) The incidence of arteriosclerotic retinopathy in part I was 6.5% and 3% in part II.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2004;45(1):55-63
PURPOSE: Since 1995, we have annually surveyed the members of the Korean Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (KSCRS) on cataract surgery technique, anesthesia, intraocular lens and refractive surgery to understand the current situation and future trends in these fields. METHODS: Eighth annual survey forms consisted of 114 multiple-choice questions mailed in Feburary 2003 to 385 ophthalmologists of the KSCRS. Approximately 28.1% of the questionaires mailed were returned. Current data were compared with previous annual survey and data from Japan and USA. RESULTS: Hospitalized period is decreased annually and use of topical anesthesia (44%) increased. Self sealing wound construction was the main wound closure technique in phacoemulsification accounted for 54%. Most preferred intraocular lenses for small incision cataract surgery are acrylic (58%), increased highly. The number of members performing excimer laser keratomileusis for refractive surgery was increased (77%). Most respondants preferred LASIK without regard to diopter range. Legal problems on excimer laser and LASIK is in increased. The implantation of phakic IOL is performed by 17% of the members and 91% of members are interested in it. CONCLUSIONS: From this survey, we found current trend and change in cataract and refractive surgery in Korea are similar to those of Japan and USA.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1974;15(4):372-374
Recently, we have experienced a case of von Hippel-Lindau's disease. The patient was a 16 years old Korean girl who visited to our hospital because of visual impairment in both eyes since childhood, mental retardation, dysarthria and gait disturbance. On the eye examination, visual acuity of both eyes were 0.04, incorrectable, funduscopy revealed optic atrophy and typical angiomatosis retinae in the right eye and optic atrophy associated with retinal detachment in the left eye. The cerebral angiography showed a space occupying mass in the left cerebellum. Thus this case was presented as a complete form of von Hippel-Lindau's disease, and a brief review of literatures was also discussed.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1992;33(2):127-134
To evaluate the related risk factors of the senile cataract, we performed an epidemiological study in 215 cataract patients and 64 non cataract patients who visited to the Department of Ophthalmology of 6 general hospitals in Korea from August to December, 1990. The study revealed that sun-light exposure, smoking, ocular contusion and pregnancy were related to the cataract formation. And also the cataract was more common in patients with diabetes, hypertension and arthritis. And long term use of steroids and herb drugs were a risk factor for the cataractogenesis. The cataract patients preferred grains and fishes comparing with the non-cataract patiens.
