2.Flow Cytometric DNA Analysis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1993;27(6):581-589
A flow cytometric analysis of the nuclear DNA content of solid tumors using paraffin-embedded tissues has become available since 1983, and its ploidy pattern has been designated as an important prognostic parameter in many human tumors. Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors among Koreans, but little information is consolidated about the significance of ploidy pattern. We measured the nuclear DNA content of 62 surgically resected HCCs and 45 non-neoplastic tissues from the surrounding parenchyma by flow cytometry. Aneuploid was detected in 18 cases(29.0%) in HCCs and 2 cases(4.4%) in nonneoplastic hepatic parenchyma(p<0.005). Correlations between the DNA ploidy pattern and various clinicopathologic findings of HCCs were analized. The mean tumor size was significantly different(p<0.05) between the aneuploid group(8.8 cm) and the diploid group(6.1 cm). Mean age of the aneuploid group was younger(47 year) than the diploid group(51 years), but the difference was not statistically significant(p=0.052). The DNA pattern did not show any meaningful correlation with the gross and microscopic features of HCC except for the presence of capsule. These results suggest that DNA ploidy correlates with growth rate of the tumor and it may be a possibly useful prognostic factor in HCCs.

A case of pigmented villondular synovitis is reported in a 32 years old woman, who exhibited bulbulous supra-patellar bulging with dull pain on the right knee joint. Aspiration yielded thick purplish brown effusion from the knee joint and roentgenologically negative. Synovectomy through two seperate para-patellar incision were carried out, and no recurrence of symptom was demonstrable in 2 years post-operative follow-up. A brief summary of literatures is Submitted.

Korean Journal of Gynecologic Oncology and Colposcopy 1993;4(3):1-6
Interleukin-6(IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine, and deregulated IL-6 gene expression has been implicated as being involved in the pathogenesis of a number of diseaaes. So we measured the serum level of IL-6 to find a relationahip between uterine cervical cancer and serum IL-6 level. The serum levels of IL-6 were meesured m 54 patients adrnitted to the Severance hospital, from August, 1992 to February, 1993, of whom 27 patients were diagnosed as invasive cancer of cervix, 17 as CIN, and also utilizing 10 patiente diagnosed as uterine myoma as a control group for matched age and parity. The average serum level of IL-6 in invasive cancer, CIN, and uterine myoma were respectively 30.33pg/ml, 37.27pg/ml, and 12.45pg Jml. In 22% af cervical cancer patients (6 of 27), and 27% of CIN patients (4 of 17) studied blood levels of II-6 were detected whereas only 10% of uterine myoma (1 of 10) shorved the same result. However, the difference does not seem to be statistically significant, There was no statistically significant difference among any of the groups, and age and stage did not show any significant cmrelation, and the results need furt, ber investigations.

Thermography is a sensitive and reliable method for diagnosis of radiculopathy. Skin temperature alterations of the involved dermatome named thermatone are diagnostic for sensory root involvement in radiculopathy which can be demonstrated by thermography. Digital infrared thermographic imaging system using computer is development and could measure thermal difference more exactly without hazards or discomforts to patient. Authors present 186 cases of thermographic evaluation in herniated lumbar disc disease by digital infrared thermographic imging system and the results are evaluated with literature review.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1993;31(3):416-420
Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath(GCTTS) is a benign mesenchymal lesion composed of cytologically bland mononuclear cells admixed with multinucleated giant cells. Our report describes the clinical and pathologic features of a 36-year-old female's tumor with a two years history over the lateral side of the left little finger, Especially, we could observe the characteristic thre types of cells in an electromicroscopic study, histiocyte-like cells, fibroblast-like cells and multinucleated giant cells. In lmmunohistochemical studies, we demonstrated that the tumor cells of GCTTS exhibit a phenotype consistent with histiocyte differentiated to Langerhan's cell.
