Hair takes a great role in featuring man's appearance and absence of hair can causes troubles in physical and psychological aspects. Many efforts have been made to treat male pattern baldness, including medical therapy and surgical correction, but there is not a definite and eternal method of treatment. Even though the diagnosis of male pattern baldness can be made with its characteristic clinical manifestations, histopathological study must be done for definite diagnosis. Author obtained biopsy material from the frontal progressive baldness area and the occipital non-baldness area with punch biopsy in 20 patients who were diagnosed to be Type II and III male pattern baldness according to the Norwood classification. A comparative study was done in the basis of histopathology using serial vertical section of the biopsy materia with the aid of light microscope and the results are as follows : 1. The average number of total hair in the frontal area was on third than that of occipital area and the number of anagen hair was less in the frontal area. The number of telogen hair in the frontal area was seven times more than that of occipital area. 2. The thickness of epidermis and dermis in the frontal area was thinner than that of occipital area. 3. The infiltration of inflammatory cells in the periadnexal field like blood vessels, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, eccrine glands was more prominent in the frontal area than in the occipatal area. 4. Perifollicular fibrosis and hypertrophy of arrector pilli muscle were more remarkable in the frontal area compared with that of occipital area. 5. There was no difference between the frontal and occipiral area in the number of lobules of sebaceous glands.

Intramedullary nailing has become the most popular fixation method in the treatment of the shaft fractures of long bones especially of tibia and femur because it affords most rigid fixation of fracture via closed method which makes early rehabilitation possible. Nowadays intramedullary nailing of the humeral shaft is being performed by many surgeons with good results. Newer implants and better surgical techniques are being developed, which suggests application of this method can be widened. Purpose of this study was aimed to define whether intramedullary nailing could be an effective method or not in the treatment of humeral shaft fractures by documenting the practical points in the application of intramedullary nailing of humerus, effectiveness in fracture healing, any complications or obstacles. We managed thirteen humeral shaft fractures with closed locked intramedullary nailing with distal fanning devices(Seidel nail) from March 1993 to April 1994. Average follow-up period was 14 months(12 months-18 months). The results were as follows; 1, Union of the fracture was obtained at average 12.9 weeks(9 weeks-20 weeks) postoperatively except one case of nonunion, in which case, union was obtained at postoperative 10 months finally. 2. Among the 13 cases, painful limitation of shoulder motion remained in 6 cases. This complication was more common in the cases with protruded proximal end of the nail. Above results suggest that locked intramedullary nailing seemed to be one of the useful method in the treatment of the humeral shaft fractures. However, destruction and irritation of shoulder by the nail was found to be a grave problem, and we found that further investigations should solve this problem.

Cadmium (Cd) is ubiquitous in the human environment and has toxic effect on soil microbial biomass or its activity, including microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and basal respiration (BR), etc., Cmic, DHA, BR were used as bioindicators of the toxic effect of Cd in soil. This study was conducted to determine the effects of Cd on soil microbial biomass and its activity in a paddy soil. The inhibition of microbial biomass and its activity by different Cd concentrations was described by the kinetic model (M1) and the sigmoid dose-response model (M2) in order to calculate three ecological doses of Cd:ED50, ED10 and ED5. Results showed that M2 was better fit than M1 for describing the ecological toxicity dose effect of cadmium on soil microbial biomass and its activity in a paddy soil. M2 for ED values (mg/kg soil) of Cmic, DHA, BR best fitted the measured paddy soil bioindicators. M2 showed that all ED values (mg/kg) increased in turn with increased incubation time. ED50, ED10 and ED5 of Cmic with M2 were increased in turn from 403.2, 141.1,100.4 to 1000.7, 230.9, 144.8, respectively, after 10 d to 60 d of incubation. ED50, ED10 and ED5 of DHA with M2 increased in turn from 67.6, 6.2, 1.5 to 101.1, 50.9, 41.0, respectively, after 10 d to 60 d of incubation. ED50, ED10 and ED5 of BR with M2 increased in turn from 149.7, 6.5, 1.8 to 156.5, 50.8, 35.5, respectively, after 10 d to 60 d of incubation. So the ecological dose increased in turn with increased incubation time for M2 showed that toxicity of cadmium to soil microbial biomass and its activity was decreased with increased incubation time.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory verbal hallucination (AVH) is knoun for its high prevalence and difficulty in evaluation. Authors hypothesized that it may be possible to find useful dimensions of AVH that reflect the clinical status of schizophrenic patients by assessing the multi-dimensional changes and linguistic forms' of AVH during antipsychotic treatment. METHODS: 33 schizophrenic patients with AVH were selected and periodically assessed with the 11 items of hallucinations subscale of 'The Psychotic Symptom Rating Scales (PSYRATS)'. In addition, to assess the linguistic forms observed in the AVH, the evaluations of sentence structure of AVH reported by the patients were conducted. RESULTS: PSYRATS showed the multidimensionality inherent in AVH. The changes in the quantitative dimensions did not correlate well with patients' subjective distress. However, qualitative changes in the cognitive and emotional dimensions showed more favorable correlation with clinical course of the patient. The sentence structures of AVH showed tendency to change from "sentence" to "non-sentence" type with overall improvement during treatment. CONCLUSION: Multi-dimensional approach to AVH can give us more information about the changing patterns of multi-faceted structure of AVH and clinical status of patients than one-dimensional or categorical approach.
