A 31-year-old male patient had malignant atrophic papulosis that afected the skin only. He had multiple typical porcelain-white skin lesion on the face and trunk without abdominal symptoms. Histopathologic studies showed moderate inflammatory infiltration in addition to the typical cone-shaped region of necrobiosis, There are no satisfactory treatment modes, and in the present case, the patient's condition improved transiently on oral medication of aspirin, but we lost the contact with him afterwards.

Korean Journal of Fertility and Sterility 2006;33(1):35-44
OBJECTIVE: The purposes of the present study were to investigate the effect of gamma-radiation on the expression of inhibin-alpha proteins and genes for inhibin alpha, betaA, and betain the ovary. METHODS: Immature mice were whole-body gamma-irradiated with 25% of a lethal dose. At time 0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours after the irradiation, the ovaries were collected and used for immunohistochemistry for inhibin-alpha, and RT_PCR for inhibin-alpha, betaA, and betaB. RESULTS: The expression of the immunoreactive inhibins-alpha was maintained at 12 hours post-irradiation and reduced thereafter. The expression of inhibin-alpha mRNA was significantly increased with the time after the irradiation. However there were no significant changes in the expression of betaA and betaB mRNAs. CONCLUSION: It might be thought that inhibin acts as one of the regulatory factors in the gamma-radiation-induced follicular atresia in mice

The purpose of this paper was to report a successful treatment of transluminal Nd:YAG laser embolysis (NYE) for branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) with visible emboli. Two patients with acute, severe vision loss secondary to a branch retinal artery occlusion with visible emboli in one eye underwent NYE. A complete ocular examination was performed which included biomicroscopy of the posterior pole of the retina, intraocular pressure measurement, fundus color photographs, and fluorescein angiography (FA). After the NYE, the two patients showed dramatic improvements in best-corrected visual acuity, as well as, immediate and dramatic restorations in flow past the obstructed arteriole in FA. NYE is a treatment modality to be considered in patients with BRAO who present acutely with severe vision loss and a visible embolus.

7.Ultrastructural Characteristics of the Round Window Membrane During Pneumococcal Otitis Media in Rat.

Journal of Korean Medical Science 2002;17(2):230-235
To understand better the pathogenesis of inner ear (IE) damage caused by otitis media (OM), the round window membrane(RWM) structure was investigated in a rat model for pneumococcal otitis media (POM). The RWM of 25 rats were evaluated light and electron microscopically on 1 day, 3 days, 6 days, 10 days, and 20 days after the unilateral inoculation of type 3 pneumococcus suspension into their middle ear cavities. The thickness of the RWM increased in various stages of the pneumococcus-evoked otitis media, compared with that of the normal. The thickening was most pronounced on day 1, being about 4 to 5 times greater than that of the normal RWM. All layers of the RWM were affected by the pneumococcal infection, but the major changes were confined to the subepithelial space close to the basement membrane (BM). Together with alterations to the BM, the most distinct pathological features were characterized by an increase and hypertrophy of fibroblasts in association with abundant collagen fibers. Elastic fibers observed close to the inner mesothelial layer under a high power magnification also increased during the experiment. These results will be relevant to a better understanding of the histologic implication of RWM in stages of acute otitis media involving pneumococcus-evoked otitis media.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1993;34(10):985-992
To evaluate the possibility of Dacron patch for artificial sclera. Dacron(polyethylene terephthalate) which is readily available, biocompatable, safe, and inert synthetic material was implanted in the area of full-thickness scleral defect in rabbits. The histopathologic examinations showed that fibrovascular tissue invested into all interstices of Dacron filaments and fibroconnective tissue encapsulation around Dacron patch had strong connection with collagen fibers of recipient sclera at 4 weeks after graft There were no adverse reactions such as retinal detachment and fibrous proliferation into the vitreous cavity except mild inflammatory response of surrounding tissue at the early postoperative stage. As a result, Dacron graft showed successful firm adhesion to the recipient sclera without serious complications. Thus, We think that Dacron could possibly be used, instead of donor sclera, as artificial scleral graft material for the surgical treatment of perforating scleral diseases.

9.Histopathologic Findings After Experimental Penetrating Keratoplasty Using Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene(Gore-Tex(R))in Rabbits: Treatment of Corneal Perforation Using Synthetic Materials. Report I.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1993;34(9):821-828
Although there had been many studies for evaluating an usefulness of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene(Gore-Tex(R)) as a temporary treatment of corneal perforation and a supporting skirt of keratoprosthesis, complications and instability of graft had limited the clinical applications. To find histopathologic factors that can contribute to the instability of graft and to try to modify the surgical methods with models of graft, serial examinations including biomicroscopy and histopathology were performed. According to the results, we were able to divide the causes of instability into two categories as a function of time. Epithelial down growth into the interface between graft and cornea with absence of epithelial coverage over the graft may cause leakage from anterior chamber in early period. Absence of fibrovascular invasion into Gore-Tex(R) resulting no cohesion between graft and cornea might be a factor of instability in late period. Based on these results, modification of surgical techniique and models of graft are needed. Several methods of modificiation are suggested in this report.

Our purpose is to describe a successful twin pregnancy and delivery after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) followed by calcium ionophore with spermatozoa from a globozoospermic man. On the second attempt of ICSI, all of eight metaphase II oocytes were fertilized with treatment with calcium ionophore. Day 3 transfer of six normally developing embryos resulted in an ongoing twin pregnancy, and two preterm healthy babies were born in the 33th week of gestation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of pregnancy and delivery after ICSI followed by calcium ionophore with spermatozoa from a globozoospermic man in Korea.
