4-fold elevation in renal cortex in plasma aldosterone as compared to those of the SHAM rats. The above pathologies were markedly improved in bi-ectomised rats with significantly lower aldosterone level. Being constantly infused exogenous aldosterone, bi-ectomized rats manifested greater proteinuria, hypertension, glomerulosclerosis and increased level of TGF-?1 compared to bi-ectomised rats. Indeed, these features were similar in exogenous aldosterone rats and 5/6 nephrectomized rats. Furthermore, the expression of mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) mRNA was remarkablely enhanced in SNX group and was decreased in ADX group. However, the mRNA expression of 11 ?-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase II (11?-HSD2) in each group was opposite to that of MRmRNA. Ccr and kidney/body weight showed no differences among four experimental groups. Conclusion Aldosterone contributes to the progression of ablative nephropathy in the rat through mechanisms other than systolic blood pressure.

This study investigated the effect of arctigenin (Arc) on the cell activation, cytokines expression, proliferation, and cell-cycle distribution of mouse T lymphocytes. Mouse lymphocytes were prepared from lymph node and treated with Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)/Ionimycin (Ion) and/or Arc. CD69, CD25, cytokines, proliferation and cell cycle were assayed by flow cytometry. The results showed that, at concentrations of less than 1.00 micromol x L(-1), Arc expressed non-obvious cell damage to cultured lymphocytes, however, it could significantly down-regulate the expression of CD69 and CD25, as well as TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6 and IL-10 on PMA/Ion stimulated lymphocytes. At the same time, Arc could also inhibit the proliferation of PMA/Ion-activated lymphocytes and exhibited lymphocyte G 0/G1 phase cycle arrest. These results suggest that Arc possesses significant anti-inflammatory effects that may be mediated through the regulation of cell activation, cytokines expression and cell proliferation.

Chinese Journal of Plastic Surgery 2006;22(3):169-171
OBJECTIVEThis study was to construct a geometric skull model with 3-dimension scanning and rapid-prototyping (RP) technology and also to evaluate the significance and further application of surgery simulation in the treatment of complex craniomaxillofacial malformation.
METHODSTwelve patients with complex craniomaxillofacial malformation were involved. The data obtained with CT scanning were transferred to a personal computer for surface rendering 3-dimension reconstruction. A geometric model was manufactured by selective laser sintering using rapid-prototyping device. Surgery simulation was performed both on the model and in the computer. Accordingly, a custom implant and an implant template, when needed, were constructed with the computer-aided design (CAD) and prefabricated with computer-aided manufacture (CAM) process.
RESULTSSurgery simulation made the operation shorter, the complications lower and the outcome better.
CONCLUSIONSSkull model provides great convenience in the treatment of cranio-maxillofacial malformation.

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical characteristics and the treatment of periorbital injuries.
METHODS61 cases were treated, including 30 cases orbitozygomatic fracture, 6 cases of frontal-orbital fracture, 8 cases of naso-ethmoid-orbital fracture, 7 cases of blow -out fracture and 10 cases of complicated fracture. The patients were diagnosed after physical examination and other examination, like CT. Through bicoronal or local mini incision at the end of eyebrow, combined with subciliary incision and local wound approach, the fractured sites were exposed completely. Then the fractured fragments were repositioned and fixed rigidly. The orbital wall was reconstructed with titanium net and Medpor.
RESULTSThe wounds healed primarily. Good cosmetic and functional results achieved in most of the patients. 4 cases underwent second-stage ophthalmectomy. 2 patients had diplopia after operation, but improved gradually. 3 cases of blepharoptosis needed further treatment.
CONCLUSIONSEarly diagnosis and treatment is very important for periorbital injuries. Fracture reposition and orbital wall reconstruction should he performed at early period.

OBJECTIVETo decrease the incidence of inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle injury through location of mandibular canal by 3-dimensional (3-D) CT.
METHODS30 female cases with prominent mandibular angle underwent 3-D CT before operation. The 3-D images were used to measure the distances between upper points of lower teeth to the inferior border of the canal. Then the osteotomy was designed according to the canal position to avoid the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle injury. The canal protection was observed intraoperatively and postoperatively.
RESULTSThe mandibular canal was protected very well in all 30 cases without any injury to the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle.
CONCLUSIONSThe 3-D CT can accurately locate the mandibular canal to guide the design of the mandibular angle osteotomy for patients with prominent mandibular angle.

Objective:To investigate the subtype distribution of HIV-1 strains prevalent in four areas of China, and to study the characteristics of gag gene variation and changes in antigen epitopes under the host immune pressures. Methods:The plasma of HIV-1 infected people from Henan, Guangdong, Sichuan and Beijing in China were collected. Virion RNA was extracted directly from plasma after the virion was condensed. The gag gene was amplified by RT-PCR and nested-PCR.Sequences were subtyped by Genotyping Tool software, and phylogenetic analysis of gag gene were performed using the MEGA 4.1 software. The gene distances intra each subtype were calculated by Distance program. The Ks/Ka ratios were calculated using SNAP program. The variation analysis of CTL antigen epitopes restricted by main HLA-Ⅰ specificities in China was performed. Results:Six subtypes or circulating recombinant forms(CRFs)of HIV-1,including B',CRF07_BC,CRF01_AE,B,CRF08_BC and CRF02_AG,were identified in four areas of China. The gene distances intra each subtype were CRF01_AE>B>CRF08_BC> CRF07_BC>B' listed in order of size, meanwhile the order of Ks/Ka ratios was CRF01_AE>B>CRF08_BC>B'>CRF07_BC. Far more diversity of antigen epitopes in P17 region was observed than that in P24.Epitope mutations intra subtypes were CRF01_AE>B>B'>CRF07_BC listed in order of size. Conclusion:Itseems that CRF01_AE is under the strongest immune pressures, and displays the most diversity of gene and variation of epitopes intra subtypes prevalent in China, followed by subtype B, B' and CRF07_BC. The discrepancy of epitope mutations intra the subtypes is significant.
