PURPOSE: We compared the outcome of transurethral electro-vaporization of the prostate (TVP) with that of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in patient with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-four patients with BPH were treated with TVP (Group I) and sixty-two with TURP (Group II). Patients were assessed at baseline for both safety and efficacy and in follow-up at 1 and 3 months. Efficacy parameters evaluated included American Urological Association (AUA) symptom score, peak urinary flow rate (Qmax) and post-void residual urine volume (ml). Safety parameters evaluated included incidence of side effects, operative time, postoperative catheterization time, change in hematocrit and serum sodium. RESULTS: The mean prostate size was 28.4+/-4.8gm in GroupI and 37.1+/-5.3gm in Group II. The mean operation time was shorter in Group I (48.2+/-10.5min) than in Group II (75.2+/-32.6min) (p<0.05). The change of hematocrit (%) was lower in Group I (from 40.2+/-4.1 to 38.7+/-4.1) than in Group II (from 40.3+/-3.8 to 34.9+/-5.5), (p<0.05). The mean catheterization time was 3.2+/-1.2 days and 4.9+/-1.9 days (p<0.05). The change of peak urinary flow rate, post-void residual urine volume, AUA symptom score, incidence of postoperative complications was not significantly different between each group. CONCLUSIONS: Although the TURP is the gold standard for the treatment of symptomatic BPH with high success rate, significant morbidities are associated with this procedure. Our early clinical experience highlights several advantages of electro-vaporization, particulary the low incidence of postoperative morbidity.

A clinical analysis was done on 134 cases with bronchial asthma who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics Yeungnam University from May 1987 to October 1991. The results were as follows: 1) The peak age of bronchial asthma was under 2 years. The sex ratio of male to female was 2.9:1. 2) The outbreak of bronchial asthma was most common in fall, especially in September. 3) The past history of other allergic diseases were present in 22.4% of patients (30/134 cases), and the previous bronchiolitis in infancy were experienced in 12.7% of patients (17/134 cases). 4) According to the skin test for allergens done by RAST, the most common allergens were Mites and House dust. 5) Eosinophilia (T.E.C>250/min) was found in 29.1%t of patients, and elevated lgE level (>200 IU/ml) was found in 63.2% of patients. 6) No significant differences in the serum lgE level were found between male and female patients. No significant differences in the serum lgE level were found between asthma patients with and without other allergic diseases. 7) The serum lgE level of school aged patients was significant higher than that of preschool aged (p<0.01).

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA, PC10), an auxillary protein of DNA polymerase, plays a main role in the early stage of DNA Synthesis and is synthesized from Gl phase to s phase of the cell cycle. Nucleolar organizer region (NORs) are DNA loops encoding RNA proteins(AgNORs). To evaluate correlation with PCNA labelling index (LI)and AgNORs according to histological grades and clinical stages of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder, the authors analysed 54 transitional cell carcinoma using immunohistochemical stain for PCNA and silver stain for AgNORs in paraffin sections. The comparison of PCNA (PC10) LI and clinical stage showed a significant correlation (p<0.05), where as PCNA (PC10) LI according to histologic grade showed no significant correlation. High grade tumors showed increase PCNA LI. Superficial tumors (Ta-Tl) showed significantly lower PCNA LI than muscle invasive tumors (T2-T4)(p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between AgNORs and clinical stage, bur higher stage and higher grade tumors showed increased noubers of AgNORs. These results suggest that PCNA LI has a significant correlation with clinical stages of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Congenital esophageal stenosis due to tracheobronchial remnants is one of main forms of congenital esophageal stenosis, and it was first described by Frey and Duschel in l936. An 18-month-old male presented with underdevelopment and dehydration state due to persistent vomiting several times per day since 3 months after his birth. Esophagogram revealed an elongated and diiated esophagus with marked stenosis at distal portion. Partial distal esophagectomy was performed. Histologically, the thickened esophageal wall is composed of tracheobronchial remnants including hyaline cartilages, mucous glands, and ductal structures lined by ciliated respiratory epithelium under stratified squamous mucosa.

We found a mistake in our recently published article.

To analyse the age of onset, etiologic microorganisms, clinical manifestations, managements and genetic variation of chromic granulomatous disease, the authors reviewed four patients who were diagnosed as CGD at Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National Univesity Children's Hospital. They were siblings in relationship-two of them were brothers, the others were brother-sister. @ES The results were as follows; 1) Initial manifestations developed within 1 year old, and lymphadenopathy associated with BCG vaccination was the most common. 2) In culture study of micro-organism, catalase positive microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Serratia marcescens, Coagulase (-) Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Proleus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumoniae, E. coli and fungus such as Candida albicans were isolated. In 2 cases, culture study revealed no growth. 3) Fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly, suppurative dermatitis and pneumonia were the most common manifestations. In most of cases, antituberculous medications were administered under the impression of tuberculosis without response. 4) Immunologic screening tests including B-cell system, T-cell system, and complement system were within normal limit except NBT test. 5) In spite of severe infections, NBT scores of all the cases were less than those of controls. Liver biopsies of 3 cases showed granuloma formation with characteristic yellow brown pigment-laden macrophages.
