The propolis, honey bee hive product, is a folk medicine for treating various ailrnents and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is an extract of propolis. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ethanol extracted propolis (EEP) or CAPE on the tumorigenesis, pulmonary metastases, and proliferation and activity of splenocytes and macrophages in ICR mice. EEP at 0.2, 2 or 20mg/ml applied topically on the back of each mice 30 minutes before application of 7,12-dimethylbenz (a)anthracene and 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate inhibited the number of tumors per mouse by 61, 75 or 100%, respectively. ...continue...

Neuromyelitis Optica(Devic's Disease) is characterized by a disease process that is relatively afebrile and strictly limited to the spinal cord and optic nerves. We experienced a case of neuromyelitis optica characterized by binocular blindness and paresthesia below the umbilicus level with paraplegia of both lower legs associated with urinary incontinence and defication difficulty. We report above case with brief review of literatures.

We studied the relationship among hypertension and retinal and retinal vessel change of 200 hypertensive out and in patients in Seoul Red Cross Hospital. The results are: 1) About 50% of hypertensive patients fall in 2nd stage hypertensive retinopathy. Systolic blood pressure is proportion to hypertensive retinopathy. 2) Generalized narrowing accounts for 86% of retinal vessel change, focal constriction 36.5% and increased central reflex accounts for 68%. 3) Concealment account for 57.5% of A-V crossing sign and anterior displacement accounts for 34%. 4) The commonest site of A-V crossing is inferior-temporal branch and superior-temporal branch come after. The former accounts for 45.3% of A-V crossing and the latter accounts for 36.8%. 5) In grade m retinal changes, puntate hemorrhage accounts for 30. 6% of retinal hemorrhages, flame shaped hemorrhages 32.1% punctate exudates 32.1% and cotton-wool patches accounts for 39%.

Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases 1998;45(3):604-608
Von Recklinghausen's disease is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease associated with characteristic cafeau-lait spots of skin and multiple neurofibromatosis. It is complicated by malignancies, which in most cases is neurofibrosarcoma. The development of lung cancer in von Recklinghausen's disease is rare. A 61-year-old male was admitted for cough and sputum for 20 days. He had multiple cafe-au-lait spots and subcutaneous neurofibromas in whole body area and Lisch nodules in both iris and he had been diagnosed von Recklinghausen s disease 35 years ago. Chest radiography showed emphysematous buliae in both upper lung field and mass in right upper lung field. Chest CT scan revealed subcarinal lymph node enlargement. Bronchoscopic biopsy was done in mass in superior segment of right lower lobe and the results showed squamous cell carcinoma. The presence of von Recklinghausen's disease and lung cancer are noteworthy.

Korean Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 1989;1(1):86-97
This study was designed to examine the influences of antioxidants on toxicity of paraquat in male rats. Paraquat and ascorbic acid were given orally ad libitum with tap water containing paraquat 30 ppm and 100 ppm and ascorbic acid 1000ppm for 10 days, respectively, alpha-tocopherol(60 mg/kg) was administered orally by sonde at 2 days intervals for 10 days. Paraquat at given doses produced markedly a dose-related reduction in water-intake, ratio of liver weight/body weight and glutathione along with the increased aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, serum lipid and ratio of lung weight/body weight. However the combined administration of ascorbic acid and paraquat did not affect the toxic effects of paraquat, whereas combined administration of paraquat and alpha-tocopherol showed relative reduction in the toxicities of paraquat. From these experimental results, it could be concluded that alpha-tocopherol has detoxifying effect on paraquat poisoning as the antioxidant, meanwhile ascorbic acid, one of the antioxidance, does not exert any detoxifying effects.

Measlazine(5-Aminosalicylic acid, 5-ASA), a component of Sulfasalazine (sulfapyridine bound to 5-ASA), is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. Most adverse pulmonary effects caused by sulfasalazine have been attributed to sulfapyridine. However, lung toxicity associated with measlazine(5-ASA) is rare. Here we report a case of eosinophilic pneumonia in a 44-year-old woman with ulcerative colitis, who was treated with mesalazine. She developed symptoms of a dry cough, mild night fever, and evertional dyspnea. Bilateral peripheral pulmonary infiltrates, peripheral blood eosinophilia, and histologic features were consistent with eosinophilic pneumonia. The symptoms improved quite rapidly after the discontinuation of mesalazine and initiation of steroid therapy. Therefore, adverse pulmonary reactions to mesalazine must be considered in a differential diagnosis of pulmonary involvement in patients with inflammatory bowel disease who are receiving with measlazine therapy.

BACKGROUND: Perfusion scintigraphy with dipyridamole have been reported to be useful for diagnosis of coronary artery disease and the assessment of the presence and extent of myocardium at ischemic risk, especially in patients who can not undergo dynamic exercise testing. Dipyridamole, pharmacologic coronary vasodilator, also induces fall in blood pressure and rise in heart rate. The purpose of this study was to answer the question if dipyridamole induced peripheral hemodynamic responses were related to chest pain, ST changes on EKG, scintigraphic defect or extent of coronary stenosis. METHODS: Dipyridamole 99mTc-MIBI myocardial scintigraphy and coronary angiography on 43 subjects who were suspected to have coronary artery disease. The peripheral hemodynamic response was graded as absent(group 0) if there was a < or =10mm fall in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and/or < or =10 beats/min rise in geart rate(HR) ; moderate(group 1) if there was >10 but < or =20mm fall in SBP and/or >10 but < or =20 beats/min rise in HR ; and marked (group 2) if there was >20mm fall in SBP and/or >20 beats/min rise in HR. RESULTS: The overall diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for coronary artery disease of dipyridamole perfusion scintigraphy were 68%, 83% while per vessel sensitivity and specificity for coronary artery disease were 66%, 97%. The numbers of induced chest pain and ischemic ST changes among hemodynamic subgroups, were 40%, 40% in group 0, 33%, 27% in group 1 and 50%, 40% in group 2 without significant difference in each hemodynamic subgroups. Either the numbers of diseased coronary arteries or the numbers of patients demonstrationg reversible scintigraphic defects were not statically different among each subgroups. CONCLUSION: Although the peripheral hemodynamic response dose not always correlate with its central coronary effect but dipyridamlole 99mTc-MIBI myocardial perfusion scintigraphy is an useful test for diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

10.Two Cases of Intracranial Vertebral Artery Dissecting Aneurysm Improved by Antiplatelets Therapy.

Journal of the Korean Neurological Association 2007;25(4):553-556
The clinical course and management of aneurysm by intracranial arterial dissection are not well known. Since intracranial dissecting aneurysm has a higher bleeding risk than an extracranial one, the optimal choice of treatment is controversial. We report two patients who presented with a dissecting aneurysm in the intracranial vertebral artery without subarachnoid hemorrhage. They showed successful responses to antiplatelet treatment without any surgical interventions.
