Objective To investigate the concentration of S-100 protein presenting in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood serum in patients with Guillain-Barr? syndrome (GBS), and discuss the value of assessment in measuring S-100 protein level to Schwann′s cell insult. Methods S-100 beta protein was measured dynamically by ELISA in CSF and blood serum from 50 patients with GBS and 22 referencesThe patients were divided into two categories by disease severity: the severe group and the mild groupMeanwhile, CSF cytology was also detected. Results (1) The level of CSF S-100 beta protein in both severe and mild groups were higher than that of the control group (P0.05)(2) The percentage of CSF monocyte in severe group was higher than that of the mild and the control groups(P0.05)(3) There was a dynamic change of CSF S-100 beta protein level in GBS patients correlated with the percentage of CSF monocyte and the severity of disease. Conclusions CSF and blood serum S-100 beta protein level in patients with GBS may be related to the severity of the disease.

In order to explore the value of assessment in measuring S-100 beta protein (S-100B protein) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with brain insult in central nervous system infections, S-100B protein and NSE in CSF were measured dynamically by ELISA in 42 patients with Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (USE), 19 patients with purulent meningitis, 17 patients with cryptococcus meningitis and 22 unrelated control patients. It was found that the levels of CSF S-100B protein in all the three groups were higher than that of the control group (P0. 05). There were dynamic changes of CSF S-100B protein and NSE concentrations in all three groups correlating with the severity of disease. It is suggested that elevated concentrations of S-100B protein and NSE in CSF related to the damage of glia and neurons could be used as CSF markers of brain insult in patients with central nervous system infections.

Objective To investigate the Demodex infection status and influencing factors in medical students in Wuhu City. Methods The mite specimens were collected by the cellophane tape method, and the influencing factors were investigated through the questionnaires. Results A total of 316 medical students were surveyed,117 students were infected with Demodex mite, and the total infection rate was 37.03%. There was no significant difference between the male and female in the infection rate( χ2 = 0.00,P > 0.05). Of the 117 infected cases, the infection rate of simple Demodex folliculorum was 51.28%,the infec-tion rate of simple Demodex brevis was 24.79%,and the rate of mixed infections was 23.93%. The rate of the mild infection (83.76%)was significantly higher than that of the moderate infection(12.82 %)and that of the severe infection(3.42%). The infection rate in the forehead was the highest(29.41%). Among the students with the oily skin, the infection rate of Demodex mite was related to sex. The infection rate of simple Demodex brevis in the male(3.70%)was lower than that in the female (16.42%)( χ2 = 6.92,P < 0.05),while the rate of the mixed infections in the male(17.28%)was higher than that in the fe-male(4.48%)( χ2 = 5.91,P < 0.05). The infection rate of facial skin with symptoms(51.80%)was higher than that of normal facial skin(33.05%)( χ2 = 9.14,P < 0.01). There was no significant difference between the infection rate of Demodex mite and the living habits and other factors. Conclusions There is some infection of Demodex in the medical students. The infection rate of facial skin with symptoms is higher than that of the normal facial skin. So we should strengthen the prevention and treat-ment of Demodex infection in medical students.

Objects To study the protective effects of cimetidine against oxidative stress in rats induced by cumulative low-dose irradiation. Methods Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (10 each):normal control group, model control group, lentinan group [89mg/(kg.d)] and 3 dose groups of cimetidine. After oral administration, all the rats were exposed to γ-ray irradiation 8 hours/day for 12 days, and sacrificed on the 13th day.The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD),glutathione peroxidase (GPx),catalase (CAT) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum, liver, thymus and spleen were determined.By using the superoxide anion radical system, hydroxyl radical system,H2O2 radical system, oxidation system of linoleic acid induced by alkane radical system and diphenyl picryl hydrazinyl radical (DPPH) radical system, the antioxidation activities of cimetidine were detected. Results The activities of SOD in liver and thymus decreased significantly, the GPx activity in serum, liver and spleen decreased significantly and MDA level in serum, liver and spleen increased significantly after 0.3Gy cumulative ionizing radiation.Cimetidine enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes in serum and organs, and reduced the MDA level. In a certain concentration range, cimetidine had different scavenging effects onto these radical systems, and showed good performance in hydroxyl radical. Conclusion Cimetidine can effectively ameliorate the oxidative stress from low-dose cumulative irradiation by scavenging free radicals, increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes and reduce the content of lipid peroxidation products, thus presents a potential radio protective effect.

OBJECTIVE:
To explore the clinical features and genetic basis for a Chinese pedigree diagnosed with congenital glycosylation disease (CGD).
METHODS:
Clinical manifestations of two brothers were analyzed. Whole exome sequencing was carried out for the sib pair. Suspected variants were verified by Sanger sequencing.
RESULTS:
Both the proband and her younger brother were found to carry compound heterozygous variants of the PMM2 gene, which included a known pathogenic mutation of c.395T>C (p.I132T) and a previously unreported c.448-1(delAG) in the 5' end of exon 6 of the gene.
CONCLUSION
The compound heterozygous variants of the PMM2 gene probably underlay the CGD in the sib pair.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2002;19(3):378-382
To study the method of anodic oxidation followed by hydrothermal treatment for cp titanium and to know bone response to thin hydroxyapatite layers in vivo, commercially pure titanium plates were anodized at 200 V-400 V with direct electric current density no more than 50 mA/cm2 for 15 minutes in the electrolytic trough. beta-glycerophosphate sodium(0.03-0.04 M) and calcium acetate(0.2-0.3 M) were used as electrolytes. Then, titanium plates were hydrothermal treated in the autoclave for 2 hours at 280 degrees C-300 degrees C. Polishing and grit-blasting surface was used as control to learn bone response to thin layers. Twelve rabbits were evenly divided into 3 groups, each group was implanted with 12 implants into the rabbits femoral bone. After 4, 8 and 16 weeks, implants were taken out and collected respectively and were made grinding slices. The bone-implant interface was observed with light microscope. And the bone-implant interface of polishing and layered implants after 8 weeks implantation was observed with scanning electron microscope. The element contents at the interface of polishing and layered implants before and after 8 weeks implantation were detected with EDAX. Results showed that there was hydroxyapatite(HA) precipitated on the titanium surfaceamellae bone in 8 weeks for thin HA coatings, and no HA debris were found at the interfacial zone. In addition, Ca and P content on the hydrothermal treated implant surface increased much more after implantation than that of polished implants. It was concluded that anodic oxidation followed by hydrothermal treatment could precipitate thin hydroxyapatie layer on the surface of cp titanium, which could improve early formation of woven bone and accelerate woven bone transferring to lamellae bone at the implanted site.
